My name is Moises Valcarcel Gonzalez and I have completed the Master’s Program for Interior Architecture at Florida International University in Miami, FL.

During my time in the program, I have found that my design work tends to be intriguing and innovative. I was once told that in school one should embrace the fact that there is no budget and that we could design without limits in school. I have taken this advice and adopted it into my design thinking. This has enabled me to broaden my spectrum of thinking and allow for the peculiar to happen. In featured projects, the risks may not be completely evident at first, but with thorough examination, one can figure out the risks taken.

As a designer, I hope to make an impact on individuals, which is what sparked my interest in studying interior architec-ture. As an interior designer, any decisions we make directly impact how people will end up feeling whether it be through furniture choice, lighting, or arrangement of spaces. There is a deep psychological aspect to what interior designers do, that drives the evolution of the practice. As time continues, people’s interests and ways of life grow and continuously change, making the field dynamic. Studying interior design helps to make an impact on individuals in any field, since anything we do as designers, can alter behaviors and interactions between people.

There are two quotes that have inspired me to becoming who I am today and have helped shaped me to achieve my goals. The first quote I came across is from Nietzsche which states, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” This quote intrigued me the first time I came across it because it emphasizes long term goals. In design, my goal has always been to make a positive impact on people. With that constantly in mind, any decision I ever make regardless of the typology, client, or users, it all relates back to bettering individuals. The second quote is from Rick Riordan’s book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Battle of the Labyrinth,

The only thing I could think to say was, “But you’re not an inventor! You’re a swordsman!”“I am both,” Quintus said. “And an architect. And a scholar. I also play basketball pretty well for a guy who didn’t start until

he was two thousand years old. A real artist must be good at many things.”This quote, although in a less serious setting, spoke to me because people like to categorize others into one thing that they do. But the entire point of Quintus’s response is explicitly stated at the end “a real artist must be good at many things.” Interior design and even architecture are forms of art and being able to successfully design spaces of different kinds, one must be able to understand how every other field works. In being able to understand the different types of clients, one must be a well-rounded individual, which is what I have aspired to be.

HOT WHEELS MIA - RetailThe Hot Wheels Flagship Store (Fall 2016) was designed in conjunction with Mariana Lamberti Vazquez. This project was based on a concept of creating a dynamic store, fluid in circulation through the use of ramps and levels. The design of the store was to have an industrial feel and appeal to the many types of visitors and residents of the Miami area. A 1-mile walking study was done to figure out the extent to which the store can reach.

As part of the design of the store, a custom display had to be created. Based o the idea of Hot Wheels and the brand being about fast movement, we utilized the railings between levels and created a double sided display case that would cater to children on the higher level and adults at the lower level. This allowed for more oor space for moving around the store, and created additional storage below throughout the store.

The Headquarters for Garofoli (Spring 2016), an Italian Door Manufacturing Company, was designed in conjunction with Anthony Rodriguez. This project was based on a concept of transparency, framing, and a marching order. The spaces grow in transparency from exterior wall to storefront glazing with a loop circulation. The space features a communal staircase andlounge area underneath allowing employees different areas to work in. A solar analysis was done to see when employees would get direct sunlight, resulting in the late afternoon.

WHIPLASH MIAMI BEACH - HospitalityThe Whiplash Restaurant in Miami Beach (Fall 2015) was designed based on a concept of bungee jumping. The idea originates from the client given, Stephen Starr. As a restauranteur, he brings to cities something new; bring a new attraction to Miami and doing it while serving food. The idea is shown through a single main circulation path that must be followed back out and through suspended fixtures and tables. There’s also stadium seating with tables that allow views to the jumping pit at the center of the restaurant.

BAKEHOUSE - Artist ResidencyThe Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) (Spring 2015) re-design was completed in order to give a more understandable flow and sense of order to the existing space. The redesign was based on the idea of evolution and creating a space within a space. The BAC was created in what used to be a bakery factory, which evolved into what it is today. The design would make use of existing qualities and highlight while adding more of an industrial feel to certain characteristics of the building.

FABRICATED PROJECTSThe double nine set of dominoes was created in the Materials & Methods class with a theme of FIU 50 Years. Each domino has three layers and the back features the school’s most iconic building, the Green Library from the Modesto Maidique Campus, the university slogan “Be Worlds Ahead”, and a world map. Each number on the domino is a different tradition found at the school. The case displays each tradition as well.

The luminaire was fabricated in conjunction with Ninosca Laguna for the Lighting class. The luminaire allows the user to modify the direction in which the light is reflected and was designed for a restaurant with a tree theme.

This “tree” was designed and fabricated in conjunction with Camila Romero for the 2015 Festival of the Trees event hosted by the Interior Architecture program. The tree features twisted acrylic rods with sequenced LED lights that flicker around the tree.
