Each person was giving a building on Pattee Mall to research and document. I was as-

signed The Schwab Auditorium. Through my research, I found that Charles M. Schwab,

the president of Bethlehem Steel, was the sponsor of the auditorium. I chose to

highlight the incorperation of steel into the design of the building in the analytique.

The drawing of the Villa Stein was to teach us how to use line weights and cast shadows. We started with a line drawing, then progressed to

a shaded version, and finals added shadows.

We were assigned a precedent house to dia-gram and draw in a in a comprehensive presen-tation. I chose to emphasis the spatial areas and the horizontal elements.

We were to design a chair to fit in a dorm room that has two or more uses. After doing some research into my precedent chair by Daniel Libeskind, I found that it could be turned on any side to serve a different purpose. I took the idea and applied it to my chair which can be turned on any side and the top side is able to be used as a seat or a table.

Rebecca HennARCH 132: Basic Design Studio IISpring 20128 weeks

For our design build our section of fourteen people were given the site of the Learning Fac-tory. As we investigated the site we found that a problem that we could fix was the lobby area into a place to display the awards received and sponsors and hold receptions for the sponsors. One detail of the design that I contributed was how the sponsor was faded into the brick wall behind the unit. I was also largely involved with the construction helping where ever I could.

Each person was assigned a house to re-search and recreate in Revit and a few other programs. It was a way to keep building our skills as we moved between programs.

Using inspiration from what the client was looking for in the design, I decided to pursue the aspect of European culture that was different from the American culture, a quiet laid back atmosphere. The wine wall and the pat-tern that was developed in the warm up exercise as a

screen between the different spaces.

Light and shadow can be used to show and represent many things. Within the house of the musician is shows the journey she makes when she com-poses a piece of music. When composing music like all other design areas, it starts with an idea and the library. Light and shadow start in the library in the morning and progess to the practice area where the piece is created and refined. As the day progresses the light and shadow moves to the per-formance area where the journey ends with a performance to an audience.

After a few attempts at a design for a wine rack, our group of four came up with the idea to

intagrate a seat into the rack to make it more engaging to the customer. My contribution was

the design pattern to fit the wine bottles.

First, we were challenged to design a geodesic sphere that was light weight but could hold a

MacBook Pro. Our group decided to make it out of basswood, a strong but light weight material.

The second challenge was to design a facade for the sphere that manipulated light and shad-ow. We used steel that followed the structure

of the sphere as a contrast to the wood.

When standing in the Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo, Brooklyn, there is the Brooklyn Bridge to the left and the Manhattan Brigde to the right. One constructed of stone, the other of steel. As time progresses methods of construc-tion improve with new materials replacing the older techniques and materials. However, the older materials still show through as the new ones are laid on top creating different layers. A building can show the progression of time though the layers of materials seen.
