ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM: 6.L DATE: November 10, 2011 ****************************************************************************** SUBJECT: Accuplacer Update Student COMPASS and ACT scores have been the primary measure used within the system for determining student placement into remedial math and English courses for more than a decade. Over the past three years, a series of issues emerged from representatives on the system assessment committee (see the March 2011 AAC Agenda item for details related to these issues). To address these concerns, a series of ACCUPLACER reviews were coordinated to provide assessment and testing personnel at each campus a chance to evaluate the features of this particular placement tool. Campus personnel were asked to provide feedback on their review of the examination (also available in the attachment provided in the March 2011 AAC agenda item), and the collective feedback was to continue with further review of the product. Although it does not provide students with an opportunity to self-proctor the examination, it can be administered at a larger number of distance sites that would also include the majority of high schools within the state. During the March 2011 meeting, AAC representatives agreed to continue moving forward with a more extensive review of the product for future adoption. The day before the August 2011 AAC meeting, campus personnel were asked to attend a joint session with representatives from Pearson and Accuplacer to evaluate the joint venture between these two vendors to align Accuplacer diagnostics with My Foundation Lab modules. Campus personnel that attended the session indicated a desire to move forward with potential pilots of this product with existing bridge programs. Along these same lines, AAC discussed the issue of Reading Remediation during the October 2011 AAC retreat where Accuplacer was also discussed. The council supported moving forward with adoption of Accuplacer within the system if concordance table data were available to establish placement benchmarks that align with current ACT and COMPASS scores used in the system placement guidelines. A concordance table has been identified (see Attachment II), and the system assessment committee will be asked to develop updates to the system placement guidelines to begin including Accuplacer as a placement option beginning in Fall 2012. Current ACT and COMPASS placement scores will be retained going forward.

Students will be permitted one re-test in English, reading or by math level after at least a 24-hour waiting period. An additional re-test is permitted one year from the date of the student’s original or re-test at any course placement testing site. Course placement scores, with the exception of the reading exemption and ALEKS scores, will be valid for two years from the date of the original or re-test assessment. ALEKS test scores are valid for one year from the date of the original or re-test assessment.
