The estimated number of magistrates required is shown above.
Magistrates appointed to the Bedfordshire Bench will primarily sit at Luton Magistrates’ Court. The Lord Chancellor’s expectation is that magistrates will aim to serve for a minimum of five years and be in a position to offer that commitment. Magistrates are expected to sit a minimum of 13 full days per year (26 sittings) and to sit regularly throughout the year. The average sitting for the Bench is 15 days per year.
There are 13 vacancies in Bedfordshire and the Advisory Committee will interview the first 39 applicants who submit an application form demonstrating they meet the eligibility requirements, including the need for court
observations. Any incomplete forms will be returned to applicants.
Please refer to the applicant’s notes of guidance before completing your application form. We would especially draw your attention to i) the requirement to observe magistrates’ courts before applying and ii) potential disqualifications from appointment. You will also be required to disclose details of any court proceedings that you may have been subject to, including road traffic penalties. You will also be required to provide 3 references and these must be submitted to the Advisory Committee in advance of your interview.
Candidates invite for interview will be expected to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of social issues in the local area in which they wish to serve, in particular the causes and effects of crime. This would typically be gained by living or working in that Local Justice Area.
AppointmentThe selection process involves up to 2 interviews which are scheduled to take place on the same day between April and the
beginning of June 2015. Appointments are subject to the Lord Chancellor’s approval.
TrainingAppointed magistrates will be trained in the Autumn of 2015 and will commence sitting in January 2016. Training involves;

● 3 Half day court observations with a mentor (between October and November 2015)
● 2 prison visits
● Visit with the National Probation Service
MentorYou will be allocated a magistrate mentor during the first 12 months of appointment. The appointed mentor will meet with you to provide support and guidance, and will attend your mentored sittings. Your first of 6 mentored sittings will take place in January 2016.
On going learning
and trainingIn the year following appointment there are a further 2 days of compulsory consolidation training. This is followed by an in-court appraisal to determine competence.
Further development and learning is supported through training at bench meetings. These occur in March and October, and all magistrates are expected to attend. Additional training events are also arranged as required to keep up with new legislation, and as a minimum, magistrates are expected to undertake at least six hours of training every 3 years. Magistrates are appraised every 3 years to ensure their competence to continue sitting.

The Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace for Cumbria is looking for people to take on the unpaid role of magistrate in that County.
Applicants do not need any
qualifications but must be of good character and trustworthy. They must be willing to sit at least 13 days a year and to attend training for their work.
Over 95 per cent of criminal cases and a large proportion of child care matters are dealt with by magistrates. Magistrates come from all walks of life and applications are welcome from anybody who can demonstrate the key qualities required for this judicial role.
The Committee particularly encourages applications from those groups under-represented on the bench – younger people, those in paid employment, people with disabilities and members of minority ethnic groups.

We are looking to recruit up to 6 magistrates for South East Surrey (Redhill), 6 magistrates for North Surrey (Staines) and 3 magistrates for South West Surrey (Guildford) although there will be an expectation that successful candidates would be prepared to travel to each court in order to maintain competences.
* The recruitment campaign will close on 16 February 2015 or
once the limit on eligible number of applications set by the Advisory Committee is reached.
First interviews are expected to take place commencing in April/May 2015 and those successful will be invited to second interview in July 2015 (dates subject to confirmation).
Prospective candidates must visit their local magistrates’ court which is an essential part of the application process at least once and for a full morning session but preferably two or three times reasonably close to the time you submit an application, as, if called for interview, your panel will want to discuss your observations on this experience. You must visit before submitting your application form.
Applicants are expected to be living or working in, or reasonably close to, the area in which they wish to serve. If called to interview, you
will be required to demonstrate that you have a good knowledge and understanding of social issues in the local area, in particular the causes and effects of crime. The interview panel will also wish to explore how this knowledge has been acquired.
Applications will not be accepted until the official opening date announced above. Any applications received before this date will not be returned and will be disregarded.
The Committee particularly encourages applications from groups under-represented on the bench – members of black and minority ethnic communities, people under the age of 50, people from non-managerial or professional occupations, and people with a disability who are able, either unassisted or with the benefit of reasonable adjustments, to carry out the full range of a magistrates’ duties.
