Subordinate (Dependent) Clause

• What is it? A group of words containing a subject and a verb, but NOT able to express a complete thought.

• Why can’t it express a complete thought? The clause begins with a “signal word” that hinders its ability to convey a complete idea.

• What are the two types of “signal words”? Subordinating Conjunctions and Relative Pronouns

Subordinate (Dependent) Clause

• What sentence structures contain a subordinate clause? Complex or compound-complex sentences contain at least one subordinate clause.

Subordinating Conjunctions

• What are the subordinating conjunctions? Aaawwubuss. There is a list on page 154 of your Grammar for Writing workbook.

• What type of subordinate clause usually begins with a subordinating conjunction? Adverb clauses. These clauses answer How? When? Where? To What Extent? Why? Under what condition? They modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

What are Relative Pronouns • What are the relative pronouns? The most

common are Who, Whom, Whose, Which, and That. Sometimes When, Where, and Why are relative pronouns.

• What type of subordinate clause usually begins with a relative pronoun? Noun or adjective clauses.

• Adjective clauses answer Which One? What Kind? How Many? How Much? They modify nouns and pronouns

• Noun clauses do the same jobs nouns and pronouns do in a sentence.
