ABTREX HISTORY 1969 - Harold Byars starts Abtrex in metro-Detroit with partner, Jim

CASE STUDY – AEP GAVIN PLANT• In November of 2006, Abtrex was contacted by American

Electric Power’s Gavin Plant, a 2.6-Gigawatt coal-fired power plant in Cheshire, Ohio

The 40 (shore A) durometer natural rubber failed prematurely (<7 years) and was severely blistered


Cold Wall Effect – Occurs when the temperature of the solution inside a vessel or pipe is hotter than the exterior ambient temperature and the temperature of the steel substrate (tank wall). The chlorides on the substrate attract water vapors and can cause water permeation. NOTE: Effects can be reduced with insulated tanks and removal of salts from steel prior to application of lining.

Water Permeation – Occurs when water vapors are drawn into the micro-pores of a rubber membrane, creating blisters and oxidation/corrosion on the steel substrate and ultimately, delamination of the lining. NOTE: Micro-pores can be reduced with harder rubbers.

Pipes were re-lined with 60A Durometer Chlorobutyl rubber

Based on the service and severe blistering, it was determined that water permeation caused the premature failure.
