I. Indicator V3: Habilitation work - MONOGRAPH

V3.1. Dimitrova E., Analysis and diagnostics of the reliability of signalling systems equipment,

Monograph, ISBN 978-619-239-361-8, Avangard prima, Sofia, 2020

The monograph is 114 pages in length, in compliance with the requirement of the Act on the

Development of the Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria (§ 1, item 10 of Additional Provisions).

It consists of a preamble, an introduction, three thematic chapters, a conclusion and a bibliography

including 86 literature sources.

The contemporary signalling systems are an integral part of the remote monitoring and control

systems in transport. They perform many functions and are a set of different components (electronic,

electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, software, etc.) that interact synergistically and exchange information

with each other.

In the monograph, the basic concepts and indicators of reliability theory that are required for analysis

and research are systematized. These include mean time to failure (MTTF), Probability of failure-free

operation, failure rate, indices of availability and unavailability, etc.

The peculiarities of the signalling systems in rail transport are outlined. The tables and graphs

indicate the types of events (accidents, incidents and situations close to incidents), as well as their

elements. Failure data have been systematized and purposefully grouped into subsystems (external

equipment, indoor equipment, inter-station equipment and telecommunications), which is of considerable

practical importance, especially for operation. Grouping is also done on a geographical basis, which is

more important than technical. These failures have been compared to metropolitan equipment failures,

thus making the survey national.

The performed reliability analysis clearly proves the necessity of defining the complex indicators of

freedom from failure and amenability to repair, which gives a much more accurate estimation of the

operational reliability of the devices compared to the statistical processing of information.

3

The classification of the tree structures used in the design of signalling systems and reliability

research - static, dynamic (considered over time), two-channel, symmetric failures, etc. is done. Methods

for analysis of dynamic failure trees (Markov chains, Monte Carlo simulation), as well as the software

products that enable their computer implementation are also classified.

Methods for diagnostics in the signalling systems according to their peculiarities and specific

operating conditions have been developed and verified – they have been systematized by types of

equipment, for on-site testing, without dismantling, in order to detect malfunctions and deteriorated

parameters. Criteria for the selection of control and measuring equipment used for rapid and accurate

diagnosis and assessment of the residual life of the tested equipment are systematized. The requirements

for the functionality and capability of the measuring instruments are indicated. The data for the usual

values of the characteristics of the objects are specified.

Methods for elements and equipment testing in laboratory conditions are proposed.

Some of the results of the research were presented at prestigious scientific forums with international

participation, including refereed and indexed in world-wide databases with scientific information

(Scopus).

Abstract: The contemporary systems for monitoring and management of remote technical objects in

transport and energy sectors are very complex systems whose purpose is centralized data acquisition of

dispersed geographical sites, information processing and generation of managerial impacts. The main

criteria for the efficiency while synthesizing systems for monitoring and control on complex technical

objects are the system's performance, its reliability and cost. This article proposes an approach that can be

used in the stage of synthesis of the structure of such systems. Special attention is paid to the realization

when selecting technical and control devices, which satisfy any technical requirements according to

necessary high reliability. The main indices of reliability assessment are systematized, which allows a

quick and accurate determination of the structure of complex technical systems in their design.

The results of study of reliability models using components with different failure rate λ are analyzed

and the ability to achieve the required system reliability by selecting the optimal technical implementation

has been demonstrated.

Abstract: DFTCalc and YAMS (a model previously drawn in KB3 is used according to the system

configuration examined) can simulate probabilistic models - static as well as dynamic fault trees with

unrepairable elements. It is necessary for this to build the fault tree and to enter the failure rates of the

individual elements (basic events). In KB3 this is done by means of a graphical user interface (GUI), after

that the model is simulated by YAMS. In DFTCalc this is achieved by writing in the Galileo language,

which reflects the structure and parameters of the tree.

Abstract: Nowadays the quantitative estimation of risk is crucial in the realization of the so-called

“risk systems”. Programs for simulation of the models of these systems exist, by which some of their

dependability indices can be calculated. In this paper, two software products and the possibilities for

graphical representation of the results are analyzed. Simulations of a dynamic fault tree with two software

products - DFTCalc and YAMS have been presented. The results from the two simulations are identical.

The advantages and disadvantages of these two software products are specified.

Abstract. In this paper, an alternative power supply of many control devices included in the building

management system is ensured. For this purpose, a hybrid photovoltaic plant is integrated and provides

supply to DC and AC consumers. Energy efficiency is also improved. Solar energy is converted into

electricity using solar modules mounted on the building roof. The developed system provides not only

uninterruptible power supply of the operating DC circuits, computers and other office equipment, but also

the possibility to produce and print reports (protocols) upon request by the operator (dispatcher) and

according to many predefined criteria. These reports offer many opportunities for optimization of the

energy consumption and technical maintenance of the electrical equipment.

Engineering Faculty Conference (IEEE Conferences BulEF-2018), 11-14 Sept. 2019, Varna, IEEEXplore

Digital Library (in the process of being published)

Abstract. The purpose of the paper is to present the features, purpose and classification of the automatic

control systems for metro trains. A general scheme of a contemporary Communications Based Train

Control (CBTC) system for automatic control metro trains is considered. Its constituent components, their

purpose and interconnections are indicated.

The subway lines that are based on the CBTC system meet the GoA4 requirements and have high

reliability based on the complete redundancy of both wayside and train onboard equipment.

CBTC system also offers continuous and reliable train monitoring including visualization of alarm

events, event logs and logging of system operating parameters, as well as many additional diagnostic

options.

The ATO function (Automatic Train Operation – a driverless capability) is also provided to ensure

better provision of the transport service and more environmentally friendly/ economical train management.

There is no need of physical signals along the track side.

Abstract: Many different models are used for traffic flows examination - macroscopic, microscopic,

kinetic, stochastic, timed, etc. models.

The traffic flow can also be examined as an open dynamic system that is subjected to the complex

influence of different types of disturbances. This is why the traffic flows can be modeled and analyzed

using the methods of non-linear dynamics.

5

In view of the general laws of the traffic flow as a dynamic system, a traffic flows model based on the

Lorenz system is proposed in the paper. The model has been simulated in Mathcad environment and has

been tested at changing its parameters.

Abstract: Risk analysis is an important activity to ensure that critical assets, like medical devices and

nuclear power plants, operate in a safe and reliable way. Fault Tree analysis (FTA) is one of the most

prominent techniques, used by a wide range of industries. Fault Trees (FTs) are a graphical method that

model how failures propagate through the system, that is, how component failures lead to system failures.

FTA investigates whether the system design is dependable enough. It provides methods and tools to

compute a wide range of properties and measures. FTs can roughly be described as directed acyclic graphs,

whose leaves (events) model component failures and whose gates - failure propagation. Dynamic Fault

Trees (DFTs) are the best known extensions to Static Fault Trees (SFTs). DFTs are capable of expressing

features that are not expressible in SFTs, like spare management, different operational modes, dependent

events. These properties of DFTs make them suitable for many situations, where SFTs cannot be applied.

This paper discusses the main methods for computation of some of the parameters of a DFT.

Abstract: In this paper, some of widely used software products for quantitative analysis of Dynamic

Fault Trees (DFTs) are commented. The computation of failure probabilities and the characteristics of

DFTs with two software products is examined: DFTCalc (a tool for Input/Output Interactive Markov chain

analysis of DFTs) and YAMS (a tool for Monte Carlo simulation of DFTs). Many types of systems can

be described using Dynamic FTs. In the article, DFT, describing a typical signaling system, is synthesized

and simulated using these software products. The unreliability results calculated by the two programs are

compared and analysed.

Abstract: In this paper the benefits of the implementation of the OTN (open transport network) in the

communication level of SCADA systems are given. The system reliability can be remarkably increased

by implementing optical OTNs which provides Accident Prevention and transfer all available

communication applications, data, voice, digital video etc. OTN ‘s main features are simplicity, openness,

easy integration, ability to cover very large distances, as well as the future-proof design. The time required

by a message to travel between different OTN nodes is specified. Some contemporary and efficient

SCADA systems based on the OTN principle, which are functioning in important spheres as transport and

energetics in Bulgaria, are described.

Abstract: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are used at the field level in the contemporary

SCADA systems. They collect data about the current status of the controlled objects and transmit them to

the Dispatcher Post through the communication level. In this paper, a PLC has been involved into some

6

laboratory simulators to ensure remote monitoring and control on the drives performance. A touch panel

has been connected to the PLC and gives a possibility of entering data of initialization and operation

conditions, as well as of data visualization. The following stands are described: two simulators for testing

of frequency controlled asynchronous drives and a stand for testing of an asynchronous drive controlled

by a soft starter. They offer opportunities for various asynchronous drives testing and are useful in the

students training and research. Possibilities of student’s practical training the programming skills for

setting-up the soft starters, frequency converters, PLCs and touch screens, as well as the synthesis of

algorithms for optimal control on the drive systems are ensured.

Abstract: SCADA systems are often used in some important industry sectors, as well as in transport

management. On the other hand, most of the railway stations in Bulgaria are not controlled by SCADA

systems. This paper proposes methods for integration of local rail traffic management systems into a

SCADA system for remote monitoring. The necessary equipment is integrated into the existing

interlocking systems and connected to the station controller. Communication terminals and an optical

transmission medium transmit information and commands between the control center and the stations.

This creates conditions for an objective analysis of events relevant to traffic safety, improves the safety

and security of the transport process, significantly reduces the likelihood of admission of risks arising

from traffic manager actions or related to the operation of the relevant station interlocking systems.

Abstract: An important accent in the technical exploitation of communication systems is the study of

the distribution of estimates of the basic and secondary parameters measured. This is determined by the

technical feasibility for measurement through parameters with the appropriate measuring and recovery

tools. As a result, the average value of the parameter estimates appears to be a function of the duration or

period of technical exploitation. Similarly to this process, dispersion measurement estimates and the

medium quadratic deviation appear to be a function of the period of technical exploitation. The current

paper contains a study of the actual operational distribution of receiver sensitivity and transmitter power

of the ALAN communication and information system. Control measurements show that, as a result of the

inevitable wearing out process, the current values of the communication system parameters are

continuously changing around a certain average value in a cross section of time. The conclusion is that the

parameters checked are functions of the technical operation time. Due to analogous processes in the

measuring instruments used to control the relevant PTC, the dispersion of the relative error in each periodic

series of control measurements, as well as the medium quadratic deviation, appear to be functions of the

current operation time. In the above context, this paper is a study of the distribution of specific

communication system data in a cross-section of the current time for technical exploitation.

Abstract: The Transport systems are non-linear dynamic systems that obey the general rules and

fundamental laws that are inherent in all complex systems, regardless of their nature and individuality.

This concept is developed and substantiated by science Synergy. The Transport systems considered in a

synergic aspect are dynamic systems in which order and chaos parallelly exist. They are subjected to a

number of internal and external disturbances caused by random factors. These disturbances lead to

fluctuations that can bring the system from one state to another. Thus, it is gradually getting to self-

organizing and complicating the structure of the system in order to perform new functions. In the present

article, the dynamics of a transport system as a result of random disturbances is investigated based on its

modelling through the theory of non-linear dynamics.

Abstract: The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides information about location, speed and time

that is used by many applications. Practically, all kinds of transport, telecommunications, energy-related

8

and other areas of the economy use satellite navigation systems today to determine coordinates, to

synchronize hours, to organize monitoring and to manage objects. The importance of satellite systems is

growing with the wider needs of networks and the growing need for users’ mobility. There are many

advantages of satellite navigation - they have a high degree of physical reliability, they are independent of

the Earth's infrastructure, they provide a distribution of loads and offer solutions for significant volumes

of information on large areas.

In this paper, three types of GPS receivers have been tested to illustrate and give a realistic picture of

the accuracy and reliability of certain products. This can contribute to specific solutions for the

optimization of positioning systems in the transport.

Abstract: Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) offer practically the highest degree of security and

protection. Their purpose is real time monitoring and video images recording from cameras in the objects,

as well as transferring the information to the control center, thereby a more reliable and secure protection

around a wide range of objects, including those with a high degree of security, is built – it protects against

trespassers, vandals, and unauthorized individuals entering restricted areas, captures incidents, allows

remote video surveillance (on a computer, mobile devices, etc.). In this paper the principles of

development of VSS and the possibilities of their integration into remote monitoring and control systems

of complex technical sites and those with a high degree of protection are considered. The use of existing

OTN-type data transmission networks also offers the following advantages: long distances, redundancy,

Abstract: The report considers the reliability, accuracy and optimization of the technological

equipment of a video surveillance system. Metrological reliability of the video surveillance system,

determined by gradual failures is introduced, i.e. by the probability that the relative error of the main

system parameters is within the limits of the allowable values representing the function of the time for the

technical operation. The metrological characteristics of measuring devices and video surveillance systems

change during in the exploitation process. Practical studies and measurements in the operation of video

surveillance systems show that metrological failures predominate significantly against nonmetrological

ones. This fact demonstrates the need and the problem of optimization, improvement and development of

special measures to predict and detect these metrological failures. The ability of measuring systems to

maintain set values over a certain time interval, operating conditions and different process modes

9

determines their metrological reliability. The report examines and analyses the types of failures in video

surveillance systems, apparatus for determining the technical condition of measuring devices and the

network is presented, research results are shown in order to optimize the operation of a video surveillance

system. Means and methods for control equipment status are shown using a virtual spectral analyser and

other appropriate equipment.

processing of signals, International Conference „Аutomatics and Informatics '2018”, Sofia, October 4 - 6,

2018, Proceedings, ISSN 1313-1850, pр. 135-138

Abstract: Disadvantages of the standard track circuits and their relatively small length leads to the

need to develop new control methods, the use of which will lead to a significant increase in the reliability

of the information to control the rolling stock location and the integrity of the track, as well as to the

reliability of the management systems generally. The perspective is in the adaptive rail chains, which work

on the basis of classifier of the track circuit condition. In the paper, a method for controlling the state of

the track with high operational reliability in the conditions of the effects of destabilizing factors in a wide

range taking into account the longitudinal asymmetry and the change in the resistance of the insulation is

synthesized.

Abstract: In the paper, basic technologies to identify and determine the location of an object in real-

time mode in a particular area are analyzed. These technologies can be divided into three main groups:

RFID - Radio Frequency IDentification. These are systems for an automatic identification of objects in

which data stored in the so-called transponders or RFID labels is read or recorded by means of a radio

signal;

RTLS - Real-time Locating Systems - real-time positioning systems. This is an automated system

providing identification, determining coordinates, map display of the locations of the monitored objects

in a given territory. RTLS collects, processes and stores location and transport information for the purpose

of monitoring and signaling for diversion from a route, as well as for analyzing some situations. RTLS is

a second-generation RFID technology;

IPS - Indoor Positioning System - internal positioning system. These real-time local positioning

systems are based on mobile devices (smartphones). The use of these systems is necessary because more

and more customers are using mobile phones to navigate and receive real-time location services.

These three technologies are embedded in the contemporary positioning tools and contribute to the

qualitative determination of the position of the vehicles.

Abstract: The main purpose of a newly built telecommunication system is to meet the increased

requirements of rail transport to service trains in accordance with ERTMS / ETCS. Optical cables can

meet these requirements and offer a number of advantages over copper coaxial cables: they provide the

ability to transfer large data packets with significantly lower losses over unmatched long distances; their

price is significantly lower and at the same time they are lighter; they are actually free from external

disturbances; the reliability and security of the optical line are increased, the risk during operation is

reduced, which means that the cost of laying and future problems on the line decrease significantly. The

report presents rules for the design of optical networks. Particular features for the construction and laying

of underground optical cable lines in non-grid sections, as well as for the construction of aerial optical

cable lines are shown. The requirements for entering the route to the stations in a telecommunication unit

through server premises are considered, the stages of commissioning of the line and the necessary

measurements and reflexes are presented. These features are an integral part of the requirements for the

realization and construction of the optical line.

International Conference „Аutomatics and Informatics '2018”, Sofia, October 4 - 6, 2018, Proceedings,

ISSN 1313-1850, pр. 139-142

Abstract: In the paper, a track line model that enables the reporting of the presence of transverse and

longitudinal asymmetry is presented. It is versatile because it demonstrates a set of matrices for rail track

parameters that allow for flexible change of replacement schemes depending on track configuration and

operating modes as well as analysis of all types of rail circuits (analysis of voltage, current and phase

variation in each section of the track, determination of the field of existence of the electrical parameters

of the track multipolar in each state and the impact of destabilizing factors). The proposed algorithm with

mathematical and computer model for determining the parameters of the track circuits can improve their

operation and will contribute to proper functioning in the conditions of degraded shunt sensitivity.

Abstract: A high level of investment is needed for international transport and infrastructure projects

for the development of the subway, as well for implementation of a train management operational system

to meet ERTMS / ETCS requirements along major railway corridors. All cases need a multi-source

approach of financing from different sources, having the European funds as a main component. Each such

project must be undoubtable innovative and in accordance with European requirements for safety, risk

reduction and environmental protection. In favour of this the report presents the main types of European

Legal Entities with their advantages, disadvantages, intellectual property rights (IPR), etc. Choose of the

most appropriate type of legal entity for realisation of such project has very high priority in the whole

investment process.

Abstract: GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) networks are a relatively new technology, but

they are increasingly used in the construction of optical networks: both short-range networks and networks

about 50 km away. GPON is a point-to-multipoint network architecture that provides home optical

connectivity and uses powered optical splitters through which signals are delivered on a single fiber to

many private homes and office spaces. The passive test network contains an Optical Line Termination

Device (OLT) located in the provider's central office and a number of optical networking devices (ONUs)

installed close to end customers. The GPON configuration reduces the number of optics and central

equipment required for point-to-point architectures. A feature of GPON networks is the use of WDM to

provide full duplex operation on a single fiber. Customer data is assumed to be transmitted at 1310 nm

and in the opposite direction to 1490 nm. A wavelength of 1550 nm is sometimes used to transmit data to

the customer when providing an additional service. The paper presents the rules for designing a GPON

optical network, examines the requirements for using only fiber optic cable and passive components such

as splitters and couplers, without amplifiers, repeaters, and more. The value of these networks is

significantly lower than those using active components.

Abstract: The ongoing development of telecommunications services is a mobile factor for the Internet

service provider that provides widespread services such as Broadband Internet, Voice over IP, Video on

Demand and IPTV.

Delivering the services of the right quality is vital for all operators, and the ever-evolving technologies

are placing an increasing emphasis on environmental transfer and subscriber access technologies.

12

Thanks to modern methods, using the necessary quality of service, IP based networks offer the

opportunity to integrate services such as voice, video and high-speed Internet on a single transmission

platform.

Defined by ITU-T and IEEE standards for APON, BPON, EPON and GPON, optimized technologies

in the access network can be implemented in different ways. The passive optical network PON enters near

the home of subscribers. It uses cheap passive optical splitters for distribution of signals. The combination

of PON optical technology with electronic version as a method of using an affordable EPON network is

suitable for simultaneous provision of multiple broadband services.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the FTTx network topologies, namely point-to-point and point-

to-multipoint, as well as to analyze the features provided by Triple play.
