Understanding Writing and Oral Presentation English in Science and Engineering: A Scientific Analysis Speaker: Prof. Dr. Laurence Anthony , Center for English Language Education in Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering Waseda University BIOGRAPHY Laurence Anthony is Professor of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, Japan. He has a BSc degree (Mathematical Physics) from the University of Manchester, UK, and MA (TESL/TEFL) and PhD (Applied Linguistics) degrees from the University of Birmingham, UK. He is a former director and current technical English program coordinator at the Center for English Language Education (CELESE), Waseda University. He is the developer of several corpus tools including AntConc, AntWordProfiler, and AntMover. ABSTRACT Understanding how to communicate in writing and oral presentations through English is an important skill that all scientists and engineers need to master if they hope to become internationally successful. In this presentation, I will look at research article and oral presentation English and show how a scientific analysis of their key features can lead to simple, practical rules that students can easily apply when reporting their own work in journals and conferences. I will also introduce several software tools that allow students to analyze science and engineering language and discover important features that are unique to their own specialist field. Using these tools, students can answer their own questions about language and start writing in a clear and natural way.
