FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR BOOKS & UNIFORMS FOR 2017
Uniting Care Concern has access to limited funds to provide assistance for families who need extra support with the financial costs of books (including the cost of the digital textbook subscription) and uniforms for 2017. Families need to hold a current Centrelink Health Care Card or Pension Card to be eligible for support. As part of the process, Uniting Care Concern require an adult family member to attend an interview to help determine the needs and support the family require. Unfortunately, the funds do not stretch to enable Uniting Care Concern to assist all families with a Centrelink benefit card, thus it is important to get in early. You are able to call Uniting Care Concern on 4201 100 as of October 17th between 9.30 am – 12.00 pm to make an interview time. Interviews will be conducted on Tuesday’s and Friday’s from October 24th until the last week in November 2016. If you have any questions or queries regarding this process, please feel free to contact myself at Oberon High School on 5243 4444. Sam MacKenzie Student Wellbeing Manager

OBERON HIGH SCHOOL - SECONDHAND BOOK SALE
Order forms are available at the Oberon General Office. Orders will be taken until Tuesday December 6th .
Ally Deller is a Year 12 VCAL student at Oberon High
School whose VCAL program has been a cause for
celebration in the Oberon High School community. With
the assistance of Andrew Ellery and Sue Wall last year,
and the continuing support of Integration Aide, Tracey
Gawne, Ally has completed 2 years of a project
dedicated to raising funds for Jirrahlinga Koala and
Wildlife Sanctuary.
Ally’s love for animals and cooking combined to create
a project centred around baking to fundraise for the
Jirrahlinga. Each week Ally would go through recipe
books, purchase ingredients and cook a range of sweet
and savoury items for staff and students. Ally then sold
her morning teas and was confident to ‘spruik’ her
weekly treats. Her Friday stalls were so popular that
phone orders were taken and many disappointed staff
missed out!
Ally was dedicated to her project throughout 2015 and
2016 and took delight in donating over $800 to the
sanctuary during this time. Her determination and
commitment to this program has been a source of
inspiration to others in her cohort. Well done, Ally! We
wish you all the best with your new business
‘Moopster’s Munchies’ in 2017.
OUR VCAL SUPERSTAR!
All students and parents are invited to attend this special occasion which we regard as one of the most important events on the School’s Calendar. This ceremony celebrates the achievements of students with awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Outstanding Effort or for Citizenship/School Service throughout the year. Top students in Year 12 subjects, all students who achieve over 90% in the VCE score (ATAR) and our Year 12 Dux are also presented.
Students will be notified if they are to receive an award at the ceremony and, clearly, there is an expectation they will attend. All students attending and those receiving awards must be wearing correct school uniform. Awardees will not be presented on stage with their award if they are not in correct school uniform.
Please note this ceremony will take place at 11.00 am on Tuesday 13th December at Costa Hall.
OBERON AWARDS DAY
OBERON CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2016
As part of Oberon High School’s commitment to Community Service, each year we organise an Oberon Christmas Appeal to support families in our local area. This year our Christmas Appeal will support Uniting Care Geelong - who every year helps many of our Oberon families by providing assistance with the purchase of text books and uniforms. Through our fundraising efforts we will be presenting Uniting Care Geelong with Christmas Hampers and Toys, which they will distribute to local families in need. The Lipson Year 7 Enhancement Class are organising the Oberon Christmas Appeal as a component of their Compass Award Program. To assist us with the Appeal we would like to ask students and their families to donate gifts and/or non-perishable Christmas food items. Suggested items for donation could include:
Non-perishable Christmas food eg: shortbread, lollies, chips,
chocolates, pudding, mince tarts
Christmas table decorations eg: bonbons, Christmas napkins
Toys eg: lego, cars, dolls and beach toys
Kids DVD’s
Arts & crafts
Colouring items eg: textas, pencils & colouring books
Gift cards
Sporting equipment - bats & balls
Unfortunately due to Health Regulations we are unable to accept second-hand items or food which is past its use by date. If you prefer to donate gold coins these will be used to purchase items for the hampers. We will be collecting items/donations up until the end of November. Please leave donations with Sam MacKenzie in the Wellbeing Office or Carole Fisher in Staff Room 1. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call on 5243 4444.

STATE SONG WRITING WINNER - GERMAN SOLO VERSION
Congratulations to Sophia Warden of Year 9 who has won the State AGTV “Song of the Year” Solo Division German song writing competition this year. Frau Ray had the good fortune to be present at the German presentation night several weeks ago in Melbourne where the prize winners were announced. Here is the link on YouTube for anyone interested in listening to this amazing song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OpkajxOisg Sophia will receive her trophy and prizes at the next assembly.
Changing the World- One footprint at a time! Last week our Year 9 students participated in a pilot program run in conjunction with Deakin Uni’s DEAP unit and YMCA. The focus of the 3 day program was to empower students to think globally and act locally. A full day at Deakin Uni was followed up with 2 days at school. Students split up into domains based on Social Injustice, Environmental Impact and Health and Wellbeing. Within these domains smaller groups were formed to highlight an issue in this area and present practical ways to tackle this issue. A snappy presentation was produced that was delivered to the Year 8s. Issues identified by the Year 9s included ‘Say No to Palm oil’, Anxiety, Be More Active, Mental Health Day, No Period 4- Turn out the lights’. A sausage sizzle was organised and money raised went to the charities of Beyond Blue, The Big Issue and The Carbon Neutral Fund. Deakin Uni DEAP Coordinator, Michelle Graham commented, Your students showed great teamwork and understanding of broader issues within their communities. Some of the incidental conversations were mind blowing – students speaking with such clarity and positivity about issues they care about. Oberon staff were equally impressed with the involvement of all year 9 students presenting their team’s project confidently and with conviction. At assembly next week Year 9s will display their murals and outline their projects to the entire school. As an extension to this program
students will be using their projects to write editorial to be included in their English magazines as well as inspiring them to change the
world one step at a time! Well done!
