1. Technician verifies the customer complaint and checks for any Technical Service Bulletins (TSB’S) and/or software updates that pertain to the symptoms(s).

Note: This issue may be a known pattern failure that has been addressed by the factory engineers who have compiled a specific repair procedure that involves updated parts and/or software.

Complaint Verified: Yes ______No: _______Bulletins:_________________________________

2. Technician records all ABS Control Module diagnostic codes

ABS Codes: ___________________________________________________________________

In addition to retrieving the diagnostic code(s) the technician performs a complete systems scan of all the vehicle computers to determine if other computer systems are contributing to the malfunctioning ABS System.

Example: The PCM uses the Instrument Cluster to share ABS System data and the problem could reside in the Instrument Cluster.

Other Vehicle Codes: ____________________________________________________________

3. Technician documents all of the Freeze Frame Information (when applicable) for all of the stored codes.

Note: Freeze Frame is a data 'movie', very much like an aircraft ‘in flight’ recorder, that saves the Power Train operating conditions when the ABS or other system code was triggered.

Freeze Frame Data: _____________________________________________________________

4. Technician performs a thorough visual inspection of the Brake and ABS System and documents the results. This is to see if the Brake and/or ABS System components have degraded to the point where it is visually obvious.

Tech info: Verify the condition of the Brake and ABS System Components, check for chafed/disconnected/damaged wiring or connectors etc. In some cases a repair may be necessary before a test drive is possible or even needed.

Inspection Results: _______________________________________________________________

5. Technician test drives the vehicle with a data streaming scan tool and duplicates the operating conditions that were recorded in the Freeze Frame(s) and verifies the code condition, if possible. During this Test Drive He/She evaluates the over all performance of Brake and ABS System as well as the over all vehicle condition, i.e. transmission slips, engine runs rough etc

Test Drive Results: _______________________________________________________________

6. Technician studies and writes down the code setting parameters. This is to ensure that the technician is completely clear on what data values the ABS Control Module is evaluating to trigger the code(s) as well as any other System codes that may contribute to the malfunction.

Parameters: _____________________________________________________________________

7. Technician diagnoses the cause of the code(s) and the reason(s) for the malfunction and makes the proper repair recommendations.

Repair Recommendations:__________________________________________________________

8. Once the ABS System repair is complete, the Technician performs a Drive Cycle Test Drive to ensure that the code(s) has been properly repaired.

Tech Info:  In some cases, if an ABS System code has been present for weeks or more, other parts of the Emissions Control System may have been over worked and damaged. For example, if a vehicle is driven with a defective Vehicle Speed Sensor, the Transmission may have been over worked, however the over worked Transmission may have been ignored by the Power Train Control Module due to the lack of a Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal.
