Travel back in time with a visitto the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, theNational Archaeological Museum, in Naples.Boasting a large collection of artwork andvarious objects from Herculaneum and Pompeii, it is one of the most important archaeological museums in the world.Local Flavor: Admire views of the sea anddine on local specialties during lunch.Educational Focus: The Horror andSplendor of Mount Vesuvius. Learnabout the history of Mount Vesuvius and itsimpact on the ancient cities of Herculaneumand Pompeii.

DAY SIX B | LPOMPEII & HERCULANEUMExcursion: Pompeii and Herculaneum.Visit the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii,which were destroyed when Mount Vesuviuserupted in A.D. 79. These sites are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Pompeii, the larger of the two cities, was covered by ash. Pompeii is known for its museumand well-preserved frescoes and mosaics.The wealthy seaside town of Herculaneumalso was preserved by mudflows on thatfateful day.Local Flavor: Lunch is served at a restaurant in Pompeii.

DAY SEVEN BSORRENTO & CAPRIExcursion: Sorrento. This morning, travelto Sorrento. Built atop a coastal cliff, thisvillage has been heralded by poets for itsbeauty. Pastel-hued houses, landscaped gardens and groves of lemon trees convergein a portrait of Italian charm.

DAY FOUR B | L | DPAESTUMExcursion: Mozzarella. Visit a local farmwhere mozzarella cheese is produced fromthe milk of buffalo that are indigenous to thearea. Enjoy a tasting of this famous cheese. Excursion: Paestum. Continue to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Paestum.After being abandoned in the ninth century,this Greco-Roman city was overtaken by forest and forgotten until the 18th century.See a variety of ruins, including three well-preserved Doric temples, which aresome of the best-preserved examples ofGreek architecture outside of Greece.
