David Migden “Animal & Man” Blues Boulevard 2014. Estamos ante el tercer álbum de David Migden titulado “Animal & Man” que sigue la misma estela musical que su disco anterior. Nacido en Little Rock, Arkansas, David Migden se trasladó a Gran Bretaña cuando todavía era un adolescente. Junto a Matt Schofield y Ian Siegal formó el grupo Lee Sankey Group realizando giras por todo el continente europeo y cosechando buenas criticas, grabando también por entonces su primer cd titulado, “Second Hand Tattoo”. Poco después cambió el nombre y la orientación de su grupo, que pasó a llamarse Twisted Roots con los que grabó su segundo disco. David Migden & The Twisted Roots son una banda totalmente diferente a lo que uno puede esperar, sus actuaciones son tremendamente hilarantes y esperpénticas, apartándose totalmente de los clichés establecidos. En el 2014 participaron en el European Blues Challenge celebrado en Riga quedando clasificados en tercer lugar tal como había vaticinado Roser Blues, miembro del equipo organizador de dicho evento. Un disco curioso y rompedor, de un músico inclasificable dotado de una particular voz, que gustará a los aficionados al nuevo pop-blues del siglo XXI. MUY BUENO. This is the third album by David Migden entitled "Animal & Man" that follows the same path of his previous one. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, David Migden moved to United Kingdom when he was a teenager. Together with Matt Schofield and Ian Siegal he formed his first band, The Lee Sankey Group and toured all over Europe receiving good reviews. At that time they also recorded their first cd "Second Hand Tattoo". Shortly after he changed the band name to Twisted Roots and also he decided to give a new conception to his music, which was reflected in his second album. David Migden & The Twisted Roots is a completely different group of what one would expect, their performances are extremely funny and grotesque, departing from established clichés. In 2014 David participated at the European Blues Challenge in Riga and he got the third place as Roser Blues, member of the organizing team of the event, said beforehand. This is a very special breaking album by an unclassifiable musician gifted with a particular voice, who will appeal to fans of the new twenty-first century pop blues. VERY GOOD.

Blues Karloff “Ready For Judgement Day”. Blues Boulevard 2014. Basado en artistas como Leslie West (antiguo integrante del grupo Mountain), Jeff Beck o Led Zeppelin, Blues Karloff incorpora en su música influencias del blues afroamericano en sus diversas vertientes y también del British blues de finales de los sesenta y principios de los setenta. Su nuevo trabajo “Ready For Judgement Day” se grabó en los Pyramide Studios de Beersel, Bélgica. Da la casualidad que el vocalista de la banda Alfie Falckenbach es también el propietario del sello Blues Boulevard y, como no podía ser de otro modo, es también el productor del mismo, llevando a cabo una labor excelente en ese terreno puesto que el álbum suena inmaculado, con un sonido atrevido, elegante y muy moderno. El resto de los músicos que completan Blues Karloff son Paul ‘Shorty’ Van Camp y Fonzie Verdickt guitarras, Frans Ruzicka bajo, armónica y guitarra acústica y Georges Milikan batería y percusión. Este primer disco es un tributo a algunos de los nombres míticos que todos los componentes del grupo han escuchado desde niños. Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf o Muddy Waters, desfilan

por este disco, interpretados eso si, con un estilo único y diferente, con poderosos arreglos de ‘hard trash rockin’ blues’. MUY BUENO. Based on artists like Leslie West (formerly member of Mountain band), Jeff Beck or Led Zeppelin, Blues Karloff includes in his music influences of Afroamerican blues in all its various aspects, together with late sixties and early seventies British blues. This new work "Ready For Judgment Day" was recorded at Pyramide Studios in Beersel, Belgium. Mention that the band singer Alfie Falckenbach also owns Blues Boulevard label and, as it could not be otherwise, has also produced the cd. He has done an excellent work, because the album sounds really cool, with an elegant, daring and very actual sound. The rest of the musicians that complete Blues Karloff are Paul 'Shorty' Van Camp and Fonzie Verdickt guitars, Frans Ruzicka bass, harmonica and acoustic guitar and Georges Milikan drums and percussion. This debut album is a tribute to some of the legendary names all group members have admired since childhood. Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters come out in this album, revisited and performed with a unique and different style, with powerful hard trash rockin' blues arrangements. VERY GOOD.

Drew Nelson “The Other Side”. Self / Sarah French 2014. Después de ocho años de silencio Drew Nelson vuelve de nuevo a la palestra con este último y cálido trabajo, donde da rienda a su fértil imaginación como un estupendo y creativo contador de historias que es. Cansado de la ajetreada vida de músico, se retiró de la escena musical, pero Drew tenía ese gusanillo que tantos y tantos músicos vocacionales llevan interiormente, por lo que pronto echó de menos todas las satisfacciones que la música proporciona. La muerte de su padre fue un hecho determinante en su vida, porque siempre le decía, “hijo tienes que seguir adelante y moverte en el camino para el que has sido llamado”. Su amigo y excelente colega Steve Marriner también pensaba lo mismo y después de largas conversaciones, ambos decidieron unir sus fuerzas para producir este álbum que aquí comentamos. Un disco de pura música ‘americana’ y folk con detalles bluesy que contiene once canciones con homenajes a artistas de la talla de Bob Dylan (Drew tiene su mismo tono de voz) o Leonard Cohen. Además de adentrarse en esos terrenos, ambos colegas se descuelgan con temas propios llenos de sentimiento con los que Nelson quiere rendir su más sentido homenaje a la memoria de su padre. Atención especial merece un blues titulado “Please Come Home”. Los músicos que intevienen son Drew Nelson guitarra y voz, Matt Sobb batería y Steve Marriner bajo, guitarra, voces, teclados y armónica. MUY BUENO. After eight years of silence, Drew Nelson comes back with his last and warm work, where he gives free rein to his rich imagination as the good creative story teller he is. Tired from the musician busy lifestyle, he retired from music scene, but he had that bug so many vocational musicians have deep inside, so very soon he began to miss all the inner satisfactions music provides. His father's death was a determining factor in his life, because he used to say him, "son, you have to move and go forward on the way you have been called". His friend and excellent musician Steve Marriner thought the same and, after some long conversations, both decided to join forces to produce this album. Pure Americana music and folk with bluesy details along eleven songs where you will find tributes to artists like Bob Dylan (Drew has the same Dylan’s voice

tone) or Leonard Cohen. Besides these tributes, both musicians have produced deep own songs with an extreme feeling where Nelson wants to pay homage his father’s memory. A special mention to a beautiful blues entitled "Please Come Home". The musicians involved in the cd are Drew Nelson guitar and vocals, Matt Sobb drums and Steve Marriner bass, guitar, vocals, keyboards and harmonica. VERY GOOD.

Black Magic Johnson “Walk With You Baby”. Self Production 2014. Desde su anterior trabajo “Call Me” que recibió excelentes críticas por parte de los medios especializados en blues, ha transcurrido bastante tiempo. Black Magic Johnson se ha puesto las pilas y ha decidido volver de nuevo a los estudios de grabación para registrar este musculoso y enérgico álbum de Texas blues, un disco de gran envergadura, potente, satisfactorio y completo en todos los sentidos. Black Magic vive los blues con pasión y determinación, imponiendo su ley y su excelente criterio en diez temas a cual mas impresionante. Prácticamente todas las canciones incluidas en este cd han sido escritas por el propio Black Magic Johnson. El grupo está formado por Reggie Britton, verdadero nombre de Black Magic Johnson, voz, batería y armónica, Alex Rogers guitarra y mandolina, Dan Grover guitarra, Lawrence Baulden bajo y teclados y Wille Christman también al bajo. La banda cuenta también con un puñado de invitados que contribuyen a realzar el sonido, ya de por si bien construido, de la banda. MUY BUENO. Quite a long time has gone since Black Magic Johnson released his previous work "Call Me" which received excellent reviews from specialized blues media. Now Black Magic Johnson has pulled his socks up and has decided to come back to the recording studios to produce this powerful energetic Texas blues album, which becomes a significant, powerful, successful and complete recording. Black Magic lives the blues with passion and determination and he displays his clever and excellent taste along ten impressive songs. Mostly of the cd cuts have been written by Black Magic Johnson himself. The band musicians are Reggie Britton (Black Magic Johnson’s real name) on vocals, drums and harmonica, Alex Rogers on guitar and mandolin, Dan Grover on guitar, Lawrence Baulden on bass and keyboards and Wille Christman on bass too. They have also included a handful of guest musicians who contribute to enhance the very interesting band sound. GREAT.

Del Rey “Artwalk” Hobemian 2014. Mujer de fina hermosura y sensibilidad, esta compositora, cantante, guitarrista e intérprete de ukelele nos obsequia con un nuevo trabajo que conmoverá diversas sensibilidades y donde más de un corazón quedará tocado por su belleza interpretativa. Del Rey es una verdadera artista en el más amplio sentido literal y acepción de la palabra y este su último disco así lo confirma. Del Rey empezó a tocar la guitarra a los cuatro años y cuando tenía trece acudió con un amigo a un concierto en el auditorio del Folk Arts de San Diego en California, donde descubrió las excelencias de la música popular. Desde ese mismo día quedó totalmente atrapada por la música con raíces. ¿Sabéis a quien estuvo escuchando en aquel concierto? Pues ni más ni menos que al mismísimo Tom Waits. A partir de entonces Del Rey empezó a escuchar y a empaparse de Memphis Minnie, Mississippi Sheiks, Tampa Red, Bumble Bee Slim, Scrapper Blackwell y muchos otros héroes y heroínas del blues de pre-guerra y del blues urbano,

pero también de jazz tradicional, piano stride, boogie woogie… ¡Ah! y con sólo catorce años compartió escenario con el gran Sam Chatmon…. El resto es historia. Este disco es una pequeña maravilla sonora que presenta catorce genuinos temas acústicos donde Del Rey canta y toca guitarra acústica y ukelele acompañada por Suzy Thompson violín, Hans Teuber saxo y clarinete, Arthur Migliazza piano, Matt Weiner bajo y Eric Eagle batería. Gifted with a fine beauty and sensitivity, singer, song writer, guitar player and ukulele performer Del Rey gives us her new job that that will certainly touch various sensitivities and more than a heart will be impressed by her performing elegance. She is a true artist in the broadest and pure sense of the word and this last album confirms it. Del Rey began to play guitar when she was only four years old. Only aged thirteen she went with a friend to a live show at San Diego Folk Arts Auditorium in California, where she discovered the amazing beauty of popular music. From that same day she was totally caught up by roots music. Do you know who the artist she saw on that live show was? He was Tom Waits. Since then on Del Rey began to listen and learn from Memphis Minnie, Mississippi Sheiks, Tampa Red, Bumble Bee Slim, Scrapper Blackwell and many other heroes of pre-war blues and urban blues, but also she listened to traditional jazz, piano stride, boogie woogie… Ah! And only aged fourteen, she shared stage with the great Sam Chatmon… The rest is a well known story. Big Harp George “Chromaticism”. Blues Mountain / Christine Vitale 2014. Doce temas perfectamente escogidos por un cantante y soplador exquisito a la vez que dotado de una gran técnica, tono y elegancia. Este es uno de esos discos especiales que uno no debería dejar escapar bajo ninguna circunstancia (a menos que no le guste la armónica) porque es el primer álbum de Big Harp George, un hombre de cincuenta y nueve años con un bagaje cultural muy elevado, profesor de derecho en Hastings, graduado en antropología por la Universidad de Berkeley, doctorado ‘cum laude’ por la escuela superior de leyes de Harvard, además de poseer diversos masters. Sus trabajos periodísticos se han publicado en diarios tan prestigiosos como el New York Times, Wall Street Journal o el Washington Post. Una eminencia de semejante categoría no podía más que ser un maravilloso intérprete de armónica y en especial de la cromática (en este disco toca exclusivamente cromática) y lo hace de forma totalmente excitante y genuina, con todo el sabor del blues añejo, siguiendo el sello distintivo de George ‘Harmónica’ Smith y Rod Piazza. Big Harp está acompañado por Chris Burns teclados, Kid Andersen bajo y guitarra, Little Charlie Baty guitarra, Rusty Zinn guitarra, Raja Kawar bateria y Michael Peloquin saxos. Un disco tremendo y maravilloso que no debe pasar desapercibido para ningún aficionado al mejor blues, en especial a los amantes del sonido de la costa oeste. BUENISIMO. Twelve perfectly chosen great songs by an exquisite singer and blower gifted with an amazing technique, tone, and elegance. This is one of those very special albums one should never miss (unless you do not like harmonica). It is the first album of Big Harp George, a man aged fifty-nine who has got a really high cultural baggage, law teacher at Hastings, graduated in anthropology from the

University of Berkeley, 'cum laude' doctor in law by Harvard, besides other different masters. His journalistic works have been published in such prestigious newspapers as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or the Washington Post. Such a prominent man could not be more than a wonderful harmonica player, in particular of the chromatic one (in this cd he exclusively plays chromatic) and he does it in a totally exciting and genuine way, with the old flavour of the most genuine blues and following the traces of George "Harmonica" Smith and Rod Piazza. Big Harp George is backed by Chris Burns keyboards, Kid Andersen guitar and bass, Little Charlie Baty guitar, Rusty Zinn guitar, Raja Kawar drums and Michael Peloquin sax. This is a wonderful amazing and terrific recording that should not go unnoticed for any blues fan, especially all West Coast blues sound lovers. GREAT.

Tina Bednoff & The Cocktailers “Tina Bednoff & The Cocktailers” Bluelight 2014. Después de algunos conciertos por Helsinki, Tina Bednoff y su banda han conseguido hacerse muy populares entre los miembros de la comunidad bluesera de Finlandia, por lo que en poco tiempo han realizado este primer trabajo discográfico conteniendo cuatro canciones con una más que aceptable acogida por parte de sus incondicionales y acólitos que, a día de hoy empiezan a ser bastantes. Las canciones y el sonido general de la banda están fuertemente influenciados por el rhythm and blues de los años cuarenta y cincuenta. Tina Bednoff bebe directamente de las fuentes de Big Maybelle, Etta James y especialmente de Wynona Carr. En suma puro rhythm and blues, aderezado con un piano jazzy, junto a un volumen muy bien controlado. After quite a good number of shows in Helsinki, Tina Bednoff and her band have become very popular among Finnish blues community members so, on a short time, they have recorded their first cd with only four songs which has had a more than acceptable reception among their unconditional fans, who are gradually and continuously increasing in number. The songs and the band sound are strongly influenced by 40’s and 50’s rhythm and blues. Tina Bednoff’s influences come directly from such great artists like Big Maybelle, Etta James and especially Wynona Carr. In short words, pure rhythm and blues, spiced with a jazzy piano, and a carefully controlled volume.

Allen-Lamun Band “All In The Numbers”. MadLeft Music 2013. Un producto muy correcto el que nos ofrecen Allen-Lamun Band con este “All On The Numbers”. Blues pulcro con matices soul y arreglos muy definidos y bien conseguidos a pesar de su simplicidad y de las pocas complicaciones a las que se someten. El sonido es alegre, festivo, colorista y vistoso, eso si, sin alardes técnicos ni efectistas, aunque interpretado con soltura y una espontánea frescura juvenil que siempre es de agradecer, además de convertirse en un privilegio para los oídos. La banda tiene en su vocalista el mejor elemento para alegrar toda la grabación, realizada en buena sintonía y con un enorme dinamismo. Doce temas, la mayoría propios, aunque también incluyen canciones de Memphis Slim, Delbert McClinton o Dinah Washington. Dave Allen toca armónica, batería, percusión, guitarra y también canta en ocasiones junto a Laura Lamun, la vocalista principal del grupo. Además de ellos dos están Willie Samuelson bajo, Steve Boyten guitarras, Paul Potyen Hammond B-3 y Kenyon Brenner saxo tenor. Un disco que se escucha con agrado y satisfacción. MUY BUENO. Band gives us with "All On The Numbers" cd. Tidy blues with soul nuances and well laid arrangements in spite of its simplicity. The sound is bright, festive, colourful and showy, with no complicated and technical effects, performed on a fluent, spontaneous cool way that listeners will really appreciate, as it is a real treasure for your ears. The band singer becomes the best element to bright up the whole recording, because she sings with a powerful voice and terrific dynamism. Twelve songs, mostly own ones, but they also include versions coming from Memphis Slim, Delbert McClinton or Dinah Washington. Dave Allen plays harmonica, drums, percussion, guitar and also sings some tunes with Laura Lamun, the band lead singer. Besides them you will also find Willie Samuelson bass, Steve Boyten guitars, Paul Potyen, Hammond B-3 and Kenyon Brenner tenor sax. This is an album you will enjoy with great pleasure and total satisfaction. VERY GOOD.

Sugar Ray And The Bluetones “Living Tear To Tear”. Severn 2014. Los años pasan y Sugar Ray Norcia sigue siendo un referente total en todo lo que huela a blues clásico y añejo. Pocas bandas de blues blanco pueden hoy en día presumir de haber llegado a ser consideradas como auténticas leyendas del sonido más puro y genuino del blues. Como no podía ser de otra forma por los muchos años que llevan juntos, Sugar Ray And The Bluetones poseen un sonido compacto, sobrio, intenso y elegante, al tiempo que les distingue del resto de grupos actuales de la escena del blues norteamericano. El grupo posee un sonido distintivo, original, propio y fuera de serie, con un inconmensurable Neil Gouvin a la batería, magníficamente respaldado por el monumental ‘Mudcat’ Ward al bajo, ambos músicos verdaderos artífices del groove, el swing y el shuffle, y que forman una brutal maquinaria en la que se apoyan y se engrasan los medidos solos de Anthony Geraci al piano, la terrorífica guitarra de Monster Mike Welch y por encima de ellos Sugar Ray con sus poderosas dotes vocales y ese swing arrollador que emana cuando sopla la armónica, todos ellos haciendo las delicias de cuantos les escuchen. De los doce temas incluidos en este nuevo trabajo, diez son originales de la banda, excepto “Ninety Nine” y “Nothing But The Devil”. Definitivamente estamos ante otro nuevo disco inmaculado lleno de feeling, garra, intensidad y tan robusto como todos sus anteriores trabajos. Si hay que escribir el blues con mayúsculas, entonces Sugar Ray And The Bluetones son el ‘BLUES’ en sí mismos. IMPRESCINDIBLE. The years go passing by and Sugar Ray Norcia continues as a true benchmark of the most classic blues field. Few actual white blues bands can boast of have been always considered as true legends of the most pure and genuine blues sound. "Nothing But The Devil". Definitely this is a cool faultless album performed with an intense feeling, like they have always done in their previous works. If the blues had to be written with capital letters, then Sugar Ray And The Bluetones would be the BLUES in themselves. ESSENTIAL.

Mud Morganfield & Kim Wilson “For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters”. Severn 2014. Con motivo de la celebración del centenario del nacimiento de Muddy Waters, su hijo Mud ha querido rendirle un ferviente homenaje con la publicación de este disco titulado “For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters”. Mud ha decidido no incluir en el álbum las canciones más emblemáticas de su padre, sino las que siempre habían sonado en su casa. Lo cierto es que Mud nunca se interesó demasiado por la música de su padre y no fue hasta el fallecimiento de este, cuando Mud tomó conciencia de quien había sido su progenitor, decidiéndose entonces a seguir sus pasos. El disco es una verdadera exhibición de lo que es el ‘Chicago style’ y el sonido ‘southside’ de los años cincuenta. Los catorce temas que contiene el álbum suenan de maravilla, probablemente tal y como sonaría hoy Muddy si todavía estuviera entre nosotros. Escuchar el repertorio de Waters en la voz de su hijo es como escuchar al propio padre, tanto el timbre, como el tono de la voz de Mud, es clavado al del gran bluesman. Si a ello le añadimos que está acompañado por un versátil Kim Wilson a la armónica, Billy Flynn y Rusty Zynn a las guitarras, Steve Gomes al bajo, Robb Stupka a la batería y Barrelhouse Chuck al piano, entonces el resultado no puede ser mejor. Blues de Chicago en estado de gracia a cargo de su vástago más conocido y unos grandes artesanos de primera fila y magnitud. Un disco que no tiene desperdicio alguno. BUENÏSIMO. To celebrate Muddy Waters’ birth centenary, his son Mud has decided to pay homage to his memory by recording this album entitled "For Pops: A Tribute To Muddy Waters". Mud has not included his fathers’ most popular songs in the recording, but the ones that used to sound at home. The true thing is Mud had never been interested by the music his father played and it was not until he passed away, that Mud realized who was his father and then he decided to follow his footsteps. The album is a true example of the real Chicago style and fifties south-side sound. Fourteen wonderful songs, probably like Muddy Waters will sound today if he still was with us. To listen to Muddy’s repertoire in his son's voice is as you were listening to his father, because both the pitch and the vocal tone are like the ones the great bluesman had. And to round it up, he is backed by a versatile Kim Wilson on harmonica, Billy Flynn and Rusty Zynn on guitars, Steve Gomes on bass, Robb Stupka on drums and Barrelhouse Chuck on piano. Pure and exceptional Chicago blues by the most popular Muddy Waters’ sons together with a first class bunch of magnificent blues artisans. This is an album that does not have a single bad note on it. Jimmy Carpenter “Walk Away”. VizzTone 2014. Después de unos años de silencio Jimmy Carpenter vuelve a la palestra con más fuerza y ganas que nunca. Este es el segundo disco de su nueva etapa en la que nos muestra su innato talento, como compositor, arreglista, saxofonista y cantante en trece canciones de su propia cosecha. Jimmy combina con acierto el blues, el pop y el soul a partes iguales siempre derrochando swing, twist y un montón de groove en cada uno de los temas. El álbum nos muestra claramente la fuerza y

la expresividad con la que Jimmy Carpenter ha vuelto a la primera línea de fuego, ya que en el 2014 ha sido nominado para los Blues Music Awards como mejor instrumentista y también como mejor álbum de rock-blues por su trabajo con Mike Zito en “Gone To Texas”. El plantel de músicos que han intervenido en este “Walk Away” son Jimmy Carpenter saxos, voz, guitarra rítmica y tambourine, John Fohl guitarra, John Gros teclados Casandra Faulconer bajo, Wayne Maureau batería, Michael Skinkus percusión y Antonio Gambrell trompeta. También han colaborado como invitados Reba Russell voz y los guitarristas Anson Funderbugh y Mike Zito. Skyla Burrell Band “Blues Scars”. VizzTone 2014. Skyla Burrell Band es uno de esos grupos que uno espera encontrar en uno de esos bares de carretera después de un día caluroso y soleado de verano a cuarenta grados a la sombra en una parada en el camino para disfrutar de una buena y refrescante cerveza muy fría. La misma energía que desprenden en el escenario la han trasladado ahora en este sorprendente disco que nos presenta quince canciones originales escritas por Skyla Burrell en compañía del guitarrista Mark Tomlinson, que reflejan los altibajos que la vida les ha ido deparando. Poderoso y contundente rock-blues interpretado con rotundidad y mucho ánimo. La banda está liderada por Skyla Burrell quien, además de cantar con una gran fuerza expresiva y vitalista, toca la guitarra. La respaldan con eficacia y sobriedad Mark Tomlinson guitarra, Michelle Lucas bajo y Ezell Jones Jr. batería. The band is led by Skyla Burrell who, besides singing with an expressive vital feeling, also plays a powerful guitar. She is effectively supported by Mark Tomlinson guitar, Michelle Lucas bass and Ezell Jones Jr. drums. These four musicians make professionalism their best virtue to display their particular sound and give us an unpretentious but, at the same time, smooth, cool and tasteful music, which will immediately catch anyone willing to have a good time with them. Paul Dougherty “River Pearl”. Bake It Black 2014. En esta ocasión Paul Dougherty nos presenta un álbum con un puñado de canciones que incluyen ‘americana’, algo de blues y un poquito de bluegrass, con influencias que abarcan desde Bob Dylan a Muddy Waters, Van Morrison o Guy Clark. Dotado de una voz cansina y apelmazada, Paul desgrana de manera fluida y tranquila trece temas de su propia cosecha, poniendo especial énfasis en las letras llenas de poesía e introspección pero, sobre todo, en los arreglos vocales. Para quienes no conozcan a Paul decir que nació en Nashville, Tennessee y es hijo del conocido cantante y organista Tommy Dougherty. Al acabar sus estudios Paul viajó a Berlín justo en la época de la caída del muro, estableciéndose en dicha ciudad hasta el día de hoy, con esporádicos viajes a Nashville, viajes que aprovechó para realizar sus primeras grabaciones en la meca de la música country. En el 2002 fijó definitivamente su residencia en Alemania y desde entonces ha realizado innumerables giras por todo el continente europeo. MUY BUENO. This time Paul Dougherty comes with an album with a handful of songs that include Americana, some blues and a little bit of bluegrass, with influences ranging from Bob Dylan to Muddy Waters, Van Morrison or Guy Clark. With a thick wearily voice, Paul develops thirteen own songs on a smooth calm way, giving a special stress to the poetic intimate lyrics but, over all, to vocal arrangements. For those who are not familiar with Paul mention he was born in Nashville, Tennessee and his father was well-known singer and an organist Tommy Dougherty. When he finished his studies Paul travelled to Berlin just at the same time of Berlin wall fall down, and he settled there, doing different trips to Nashville, travels that gave him the opportunity to make his first recordings at the Mecca of country music. In 2002 he definitively established his home in Germany and since then on, he has made countless tours all over Europe. VERY GOOD.

Liz Mandeville “Heart ‘O’ Chicago”. Blue Kitty Music / Frank Roszak 2014. Pocas mujeres pueden seducirnos tanto como lo hace Liz Mandeville. Es una artista completa, cuya voz desgarrada y fecunda, junto a su forma de rasgar la guitarra comunican continuamente energía y emoción a partes iguales en todas y cada una de las canciones que interpreta. Sus aportaciones musicales nos transmiten lo que un buen blues debe siempre susurrar al oyente, y que es saber expresar los verdaderos sentimientos, vivencias y sensaciones que el artista lleva dentro de sí. Liz Mandeville deja fluir con gracia y sensibilidad todo ese bagaje íntimo y personal desde una perspectiva optimista y sincera. Mandeville canta y toca la guitarra acompañada por el también guitarrista Minoru Maruyama, Darryl Wright bajo, Jeremiah Thomas batería, Joan Gand piano y B-3, Wade Baker trompeta, Eric Campbell trombón y Oz Landesberg

saxo. A ellos se les añaden en algunos temas algunos músicos invitados como Eddie Shaw saxo, Billy Branch y Dizzy Bolinski a la armónica y Charlie Love vocales. Blues bien realizado y agradable de escuchar, con aportaciones y arreglos perfectamente efectuados por todos los músicos que intervienen en el disco. MUY BUENO. Few women can seduce us as Liz Mandeville. She is a complete artist, whose torn productive voice, together with the way she strums her guitar, always give energy and feeling in equal parts in each and every one of the songs she performs. Her musical contribution gives what a good blues must always whisper to every listener, that is to say to be able to express the true feelings and life experiences an artist has inside his heart. Liz Mandeville lets flow with grace and sensitivity all her inner personal feelings and she does it from an optimistic sincere perspective. Mandeville sings and plays guitar, backed by Minoru Maruyama on guitar too, Darryl Wright on bass, Jeremiah Thomas on drums, Joan Gand on piano and B-3, Wade Baker on trumpet, Eric Campbell on trombone and Oz Landesberg on sax. Some guest musicians also contribute in some tracks, like Eddie Shaw on sax, Billy Branch and Dizzy Bolinski on harmonica and Charlie Love on vocals. Well done and pleasant blues, with excellent arrangements and good contributions by all the musicians involved in the album. VERY GOOD.

Mississippi Heat “Warning Shot”. Delmark / Frank Roszak 2014. Qué bueno es el blues de Chicago sobre todo si está terriblemente bien interpretado como es el caso que nos ocupa. Pocas cosas pueden decirse de esta banda que los buenos aficionados no conozcan. Liderada con pulso firme por el excelente armonicista Pierre Lacocque, en este su último trabajo dirigiendo a sus Mississippi Heat incluye dieciséis temas, catorce de ellos originales, que se mueven del más puro blues de Chicago al profundo blues del Delta, pasando por el jungle, los ritmos latinos, boogies llenos de swing, las baladas rhythm and blues e incluso alguna concesión al calypso y la rumba muy presentes en los sonidos negroides de New Orleans. Además de la formación habitual con la poderosa y electrizante voz de Inetta Visor, Pierre Lacocque a la armónica, Giles Corey a la guitarra, Brian Quinn al bajo y Kenny Smith a la batería, el disco incluye a un buen puñado de invitados entre los que sobresalen Carl Weathersby guitarra, Neal O’Hara al piano y órgano o Sax Gordon a los saxos. Como es habitual en ellos, el grupo suena diáfano y bien conjuntado, con una excelente mezcla de músicas y un sonido totalmente empastado y fluido. Sin duda alguna este disco atrapará al oyente ávido de disfrutar del mejor y más jugoso blues. MUY BUENO. How good is Chicago blues especially when they are good played as happens in this album. Few things can be said about Mississippi Heat good fans might not be aware. Firmly led by the excellent harmonica player Pierre Lacocque, Mississippi Heat last album includes sixteen songs, fourteen original ones, that move from real Chicago blues to deep Delta blues, but also they give us some jungle, latin rhythms, swingin’ boogies, rhythm and blues ballads and even some small drops of calypso and rhumba coming from New Orleans black sounds. Besides the habitual band members with the powerful electrifying voice of Inetta Visor, Pierre Lacocque on harmonica, Giles Corey on guitar, Brian Quinn on bass and Kenny Smith on drums, the album gathers a handful of amazing guest musicians like Carl Weathersby on guitar, Neal O'Hara on piano and organ or Sax Gordon on sax. As it could not be otherwise the group sounds really fine and cool, with an

excellent mixture of blues styles and a completely fluid well teamed sound. Undoubtedly this album will catch all listeners willing to enjoy the best and most juicy blues. GREAT.

Chaz DePaolo “One Night Live In Iona”. Rojer 2014. Aunque a muchos no les resulte familiar el nombre de Chaz DePaolo, este guitarrista, cantante y compositor posee una amplia y nada desdeñable experiencia en el mundo musical. Además de haber publicado una serie de álbumes con los que se ganó el reconocimiento de la prensa y los medios especializados, Chaz fue también director musical y guitarra solista de la banda de Leon Hendrix (hermano de Jimi). En esta ocasión Chaz DePaolo nos presenta un álbum y un dvd grabado en directo desde una iglesia en Iona, Lebanon, Pensilvania, donde nos muestra con claridad que es un guitarrista hábil y ecléctico, ya que en todas las canciones, un total de once, Chaz nos ofrece una selección muy bien equilibrada que sobrepasa nuestras expectativas. Las letras de sus canciones se refieren a los problemas de la vida cotidiana con los que todos podemos sentirnos concernidos en un momento u otro. Incendiarios y poderosos solos de guitarra ilustran este cd/dvd que, en mi opinión, no acaban de reflejar todo cuanto DePaolo puede ofrecer en directo. La voz y la guitarra de Chaz están respaldadas por Hank Kaneshige bajo, Robert Chaseman saxo y Cliff Malcomas batería. BUENO. Although you may not be familiar with Chaz DePaolo, this guitar player, singer and song-writer has a wide experience in the musical world. Besides publishing a series of albums which received a good recognition by specialized media, Chaz was also the musical director and lead guitar player in Leon Hendrix (Jimi’s brother) band. This time Chaz DePaolo comes back with an album and a dvd recorded live at a church in Iona, Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he shows us he is a skilful eclectic guitar player, because Chaz brings us a very well-balanced selection of eleven songs that exceeds our expectations. The song lyrics talk about life daily problems we can all feel concerned in some way. Flaming and powerful guitar solos come along this cd/dvd that I think do not completely reflect everything DePaolo is able to do in his live performances. Chaz’s vocals and guitar playing are well supported by Hank Kaneshige on bass, Robert Chaseman on sax and Cliff Malcomas on drums. GOOD.

Daddy Mac Blues Band “Blues Central”. Inside Sounds 2014. Desde la publicación de su primer álbum hace ya más de quince años, Daddy Mack Blues Band se han consagrado como una banda muy popular y destacada del blues de Memphis. Este es su sexto disco desde que la banda empezara su andadura hace ya un buen puñado de años. “Blues Central” captura toda la magia y la energía de unos músicos profesionales muy bien conjuntados. No en vano, y con la excepción del batería Fast Eddie Lester, llevan tocando juntos desde el inicio de la formación. El álbum presenta una variedad de estilos y canciones, todo ello enmarcado en los blues que se cuecen en la ciudad de Memphis. El grupo está formado por Daddy Mac Orr guitarra y voz, James Bonner guitarra rítmica y coros, Harold Bonner bajo y Fast Eddie Lester batería. Para el disco la banda ha contado con una larga lista de invitados del área de Memphis que contribuyen a realzar las canciones incluídas. Buenos ritmos de sincopado colorido, junto a shuffles al estilo Beale Street donde guitarras y armónicas danzarinas y golosas conseguirán atrapar al oyente.

Con doscientos conciertos anuales Daddy Mack Blues Band pueden vanagloriarse de haber conseguido sonido propio que sin duda gustará a todos cuantos se hagan con una copia de este cd. MUY BUENO. Since they published his first album over fifteen years ago, Daddy Mack Blues Band has become one of the most prominent and popular Memphis blues bands. This is his sixth album in his musical career they started quite a long time ago. "Blues Central" captures all the magic and energy of these very professional and well teamed musicians. Not in vain, and except drummer Fast Eddie Lester, they have been together since they started to play. The album presents a variety of styles and songs, all framed in the blues that are usually performed in Memphis. The group includes Daddy Mac Orr guitar and vocals, James Bonner rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Harold Bonner bass and Fast Eddie Lester drums. You will also find a good bunch of Memphis-area musicians who contribute to enhance the quality of the whole album. Good syncopated colourful rhythms, together with Beale Street style shuffles, where delightful dancing guitars and harmonica solos will catch all listeners. Howard Glazer “Looking In The Mirror”. Lazy Brothers / Frank Roszak 2014. Este último trabajo del cantante y guitarrista Howard Glazer sigue los pasos de su disco anterior titulado “Stepchild Of The Blues” publicado en el 2013 y que recibió estupendas críticas por parte de los medios especializados. Como su titulo indica, “Looking In The Mirror” refleja con fidelidad y de manera apasionada diversos estilos de blues, rock blues e incluso música alternativa. Todo ello Howard lo interpreta de forma sagaz y espontánea como pocos pueden hacerlo, gracias a su conocimiento de la guitarra eléctrica, su dominio de la slide y el control y la pericia que demuestra cuando la Resonator cae en sus manos. En este disco han intervenido Howard Glazer guitarras y voz, Charles David Stuart batería y percusión, Chris Brown bajo, Maggie McCabe y Stephanie Johnson voces, Larry Marek órgano, David Kocbus trompeta y Tom Schmaltz flauta. Un álbum para todas las audiencias ya que, además del blues mas genuino, Glazer también se atreve con resultados más que suficientes a interpretar algunas canciones que se apartan del camino bluesero para, de este modo, ofrecer al oyente una visión más amplia y ecléctica de la música del siglo XXI. A pesar de las muchas peticiones de sus fans, seguidores e incondicionales que siempre le solicitaban que grabara un disco en directo, Ben Poole nunca se había decidido a hacerlo, pues pensaba que un disco no podía reflejar la fuerza y la expresividad que imprimía en todas sus actuaciones en directo. Finalmente y para satisfacer las incesantes demandas de su público, Poole se ha decidido a hacerlo y como no podía ser de otro modo, ha escogido su increíble concierto ofrecido el 31 de octubre del 2013 en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres, para la prestigiosa cadena BBC. Después de un año de incesantes giras por toda Europa, la culminación fue este memorable concierto que desarrolló en plenitud de facultades y donde se desprende todo su poderoso y enérgico rock-blues con base popera, acompañado por su incondicional banda de músicos y amigos formada por Craig Bacon batería, Mat Beable bajo, Sam Mason teclados y Amy Eftekhari coros. Todo ello construido a partir de unas letras clamorosas, salpicadas de un mensaje y unos conceptos que no pueden pasar desapercibidos a ningún oído, adornado todo ello con su fragante y ampuloso sonido de guitarra junto a esa voz impetuosa y nerviosa de la que hace gala en todas y cada una de las canciones del disco. In spite the many requests of his followers and unconditional fans asking him to record a live album, Ben Poole was never willing to do so, because he thought a cd could not reflect the strength and expressiveness he always gives to his live performances. Finally and to stop the endless fans demands, Poole decided to do it and finally and as it could not be otherwise, he chose the incredible gig he gave on 31st October 2013 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, for the prestigious BBC. After a year of endless venues and tours all over Europe, to round up this successful year he did that amazing show where he gave his greatest abilities to communicate all his powerful energetic rock-blues with some pop details, backed by his unconditional band of musicians and friends with Craig Bacon on drums, Mat Beable on bass, Sam Mason on keyboards and Amy Eftekhari on backing vocals. Songs built up over a basis of clamorous lyrics with a message and different concepts that cannot be unnoticed by listeners, together with the magnificent sound of his guitar and the special fierce and nervous voice he displays in every one of the album songs. VERY GOOD.

Fathead “Fatter Than Ever”. Electro-Fi / Sarah French 2014. Fathead es una de las mejores y más importantes bandas de blues de Canadá, con muchos años de carretera a sus espaldas y un bagaje impresionante en lo que a tocar blues se refiere y cuando digo blues, digo blues, sin incursiones a otros terrenos, ni sofisticaciones de ningún otro calibre. Fathead reúne a algunos de los músicos mas prestigiosos de la escena del blues canadiense. John Mays canta e imprime mucho feeling y credibilidad a las letras de las canciones, mientras Al Lerman añade el virtuosismo y el temple de su armónica, además del saxo y la guitarra Resonator. Todo ello perfectamente ensamblado por el sólido bajo de Bob ‘Omar’ Tunnoch y la increíble y poderosa batería de Bucky Berger, sin olvidarnos de Papa John King que, en este álbum, debuta como nuevo miembro y guitarrista de los Fathead (de hecho durante veinte años Papa había acompañado al legendario cantante y guitarrista británico y gran amigo

de Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry y que estuvo viviendo en Canadá hasta su fallecimiento). Poderoso y energético viaje por el blues, sazonado con elementos del rhythm and blues, funky, gospel, soul y algunos detalles de rock ans roll es la propuesta altamente recomendable con la que el grupo nos invita a degustar en este nuevo trabajo llamado “Fatter Than Ever”. Fathead is one of the best and most important blues bands in Canada, with many years on he road and an impressive baggage in playing blues and only blues, that is to say, blues without driving it to other different sophisticated lands. Fathead brings together some of the most prestigious musicians of Canadian blues scene. John Mays gives a lot of feeling and credibility to the song lyrics, while Al Lerman adds virtuosity and passionate strength to his harmonica, besides playing saxophone and Resonator guitar. Jordan Officer “I’m Free”. Self Production / Sarah French 2014. Gracias al ‘Conseil des Arts et des Lettres’ de Quebec, Jordan Officer pudo residir durante seis meses en la ciudad de New York. Jordan aprovechó aquella estancia para grabar este nuevo álbum con diez canciones, ocho originales y dos covers, que nos presentan a un correcto guitarrista con una voz muy personal (más que cantar recita y susurra). Básicamente Jordan navega y se mueve entre dos corrientes musicales, que son el blues y el folk, géneros por los que siente una auténtica predilección y con los que se encuentra cómodo. Sin buscar demasiadas pretensiones técnicas, Jordan Officer nos ofrece un trabajo bien coordinado, interpretado con bastante corrección. Como él mismo nos comenta, su estancia en New York hizo que su música se decantara cada vez más hacia el blues, lo que fue como un retorno a sus raíces musicales. Officer está acompañado por los baterías Tony Mason y Charley Drayton y los bajistas Andy Hess y Jeff Hill. En este disco Jordan Officer se ha sentido totalmente libre para renovarse y reinventarse a si mismo. BUENO / GOOD. Thanks to the offer of the 'Conseil des Arts et des Lettres' of Quebec, Jordan Officer could live for six months in New York city. During his stay Jordan recorded this new album that includes ten songs, eight own ones and two covers, which show us a fairly correct guitar player with a very personal voice (he recites and whispers more than singing). Basically Jordan moves between two musical styles, blues and folk, where he feels comfortable because he really loves them. Without looking for technical excellences, Jordan Officer gives us a well-coordinated and correct performing. As he says, that time in New York made his music gradually move to the blues, which for him was as a comeback to his musical roots. Officer is backed by drummers Tony Mason and Charley Drayton and bass player Andy Hess and Jeff Hill. In this cd Jordan Officer felt totally free to renovate and reinvent himself. GOOD.

The Knickerbocker All-Stars “Open Mic At The Knick”. JP Cadillac / Frank Roszak 2014. Este álbum es cosa fina, pura dinamita, efervescente, dinámico, competente, contundente... Trece temas que van desde composiciones de Gene Barge a Lowell Fulson, Roy Milton, Eddie Jones o Eddie Boyd y algunos más, todos a cual mejor, una verdadera pasada, una cascada de sonidos entroncados en la mejor tradición del blues tejano, del West Coast, del swing y del jump, todo ello a cargo de una banda formada para la ocasión, The Knickerbocker All-Stars. Su nombre proviene del legendario Knickerbocker Café situado en la ciudad de Westerly en Rhode Island, donde durante los años setenta y ochenta The Roomful Of Blues tocaban cada domingo. Aquellos conciertos atraían a un gran número de fabulosos músicos que se unían a la fiesta en unas sesiones increíbles, que eran algo fuera de serie. El batería era Bob Christina, (hermano de Fran, batería por aquellos años de The Fabulous Thunderbirds) y ha sido precisamente Bob quien ha conseguido reunir a algunos de aquellos insuperables artistas para formar esta Knickerbocker All-Stars. Entre los músicos que intervienen en esta singular y atractiva banda reunida para la ocasión están Curtis Salgado, Johnny Nicholas, Sugar Ray Norcia, Dave Maxwell, Al Copley, Rich Lataille y por supuesto Fran y Bob Christina, aparte de muchos otros monstruos del blues de la zona alta de la costa este. El disco no tiene desperdicio y debe ser considerado una pequeña obra de arte de la música más genuina y atractiva que tanto nos complace y que amamos con locura. IMPRESCINDIBLE. This album is really fine, pure dynamite, with a high spirited, dynamic and powerful music... Thirteen tracks ranging from songs coming from Gene Barge to Lowell Fulson, Roy Milton, Eddie Jones or Eddie Boyd among some other really good other names. An amazing album with a cascade of sounds that follow the real tradition of Texas, West Coast, swing and jump blues, performed by an all stars band called The Knickerbocker All-Stars. In fact the name comes from legendary Knickerbocker Cafe of Westerly in Rhode Island, where The Roomful Of Blues used to play every Sunday in the 70’s and the beginning of the 80’s. Those shows attracted a large number of fabulous musicians who joined the party on incredible sessions that became very popular. The drummer was Bob Christina, (whose brother Fran was also drummer of The Fabulous Thunderbirds) and it was Bob who managed to gather some of those incredible artists to form The Knickerbocker All-Stars. Among the musicians involved in this unique attractive band you will find Curtis Salgado, Johnny Nicholas, Sugar Ray Norcia, Dave Maxwell, Al Copley, Rich Lataille and, of course, Fran and Bob Christina, together with many other blues monsters of the upper east coast blues. An album that does not have any single bad note on it, a small masterpiece of the most genuine attractive music that delights and drives us crazy. ESSENTIAL.

The Long Johns Band “The Long Johns Band”. Self Production 2014. Rock and roll angosto, pegajoso y directo, puro rock and roll garajero y atormentado a cargo de The Long Johns Band, pero debo reconocer que me caen simpáticos. Sus letras están profundamente influenciadas por las de los grupos pop españoles de los ochenta, con inflexiones y destellos a lo Siniestro Total, Os Resentidos e incluso a grupos de la ‘movida madrileña’. Después de lo dicho no hay que pensar que The Long Johns Band no interpretan blues, por

Este proyecto fue iniciado en el año 2013 por el guitarrista y cantante Dario Sueiro y el bajista Oscar Garcia del Pomar y este es el primer disco con el que se estrenan. Ellos mismos dicen que tienen una dilatada experiencia en esto de subirse a los escenarios de los baretos que pululan por Cantabria, Asturias, Castilla, León, Euskadi e incluso la capital de España, Madrid. Además de los dos músicos ya mencionados, completan la banda que ha intervenido en estas grabaciones Andoni Elorriaga y Alberto Combarro baterías, Manuel Velasco armónica y saxos y Fernando Macaya dobro. BUENO. Sticky, straight and narrow windy rock and roll, pure garage troublesome rocky music by The Long Johns Band, I must admit they have given me a friendly joy. Their lyrics are deeply influenced by those of 80’s Spanish pop groups, with inflections of those bands like Siniestro Total, Os Resentidos and some other artists of that musical movement called “la movida madrileña”. This said, do not think The Long Johns Band do not play blues, of course the band performs blues but always from his own perspective giving an original vision to the music they do. A medida que avanza el tiempo y van editando nuevos trabajos, el grupo extremeño Guitar Not So Slim liderado por el cantante y guitarrista americano afincado en Cáceres Troy Nahumko, va superándose cada vez más, no solamente en cuanto a calidad, sino también como arreglistas y en lo que a composiciones propias se refiere. Dicen que su música pasa mejor cuando esta se saborea con buena comida sureña y se riega con los mejores vinos españoles ya sean de Extremadura, la Rioja o el Priorato. El álbum incluye trece nuevas canciones en las que se da un repaso al blues visto desde diferentes ángulos. De hecho podría definirse como una revisión y un homenaje a las bandas de cuerda del sur de los USA de los años veinte y treinta, con influencias de gospel, western swing y aromas de aquellas originales jug bands. Además de homenajear a los músicos y bandas que mencionan en el cd, de forma inconsciente también rinden tributo a los Mississippi Sheiks, Noah Lewis, The Shreveport Home Wreckers, Bumble Bee Slim, Casey Bill Weldon y algunos otros de los grandes intérpretes del blues de preguerra que, por cuestión de espacio, no voy a mencionar. Guitar Not So Slim es una formación de músicos con una calidad instrumental impresionante y un conocimiento del género fuera de toda duda. Los invitados con los que han contado para la ocasión es inmejorable, la vocalista Mary May esta soberbia y Lino Vishnudatt al piano está inspiradísimo. Extremadura band named Guitar Not So Slim, led by American singer and guitar player now settled in Caceres Troy Nahumko, is daily improving, not only with an increasing quality, but also as arrangers and song writers. The group says his music becomes better when it is savoured with some good Spanish dishes and the best wines from Extremadura, La Rioja or El Priorato.
