Neil Armstrong Academy April 1, 2015 Down the Stretch They Come! Walking in and out of the Armstrong classrooms this time of year is a remarkable experience. Students and teachers may be making bigger gains right now than at any other time of the year. This is crunch time! Every student in the school is working towards a personal academic best in which each student will try to top the score he or she set last year (or the middle of this year). The students have taken this challenge seriously, and they seem to be working in overdrive to make it possible. The teachers, too, are providing a laser -like focus on the most essential concepts that will help their students finish this year strong and have the best possible foundation for the upcoming school years. Clash of Classes

Last Friday, Armstrong students enjoyed another great Clash of Classes reward activity—the Paper Snowball Fight. Students who had earned enough points on their Personal Training Charts participated in a head-to-head competition with the neighboring classes on their grade level. Students fought to clear their own village of any snowballs and to fill the neighboring villages with as many as possible. Therefore, this was an event where the lowest score won. The competition was fierce, and you can see the results on this week’s ABC News.

Right after Spring break, students who qualify will participate in the next event: the Jump the Line Challenge. This event is the reward activity for the personal training chart due on April 1st. Students will not have a tracker over Spring Break, but they’ll receive a new one on the first Wednesday back. Students should work on their Personal Training Charts in preparation to set a personal best on their end-of-year testing in May. Students in the lower grades are working toward beating their Middle-of-Year (MOY) DIBELS score, and students in upper grades are working toward beating their last year SAGE scores.

Please remind your students often about their goals and help cheer them on during their personal training.

Parking Lot Reminders

The springtime is a great opportunity for a review of the parking and drop-off/pick-up expectations. I want to say a huge thank you to the Armstrong patrons for helping this run as smoothly as possible and for helping us improve constantly. To help the process go even smoother, here are a few reminders or suggestions:

Please refrain from using the north parking lot for drop off/pick up. We’ve been asked by Granite Transportation to keep that area cleared, and we’ve concentrated our safety patrol on the south parking lot.

Use the entire perimeter of the horse-shoe shaped drop off. Anywhere with a yellow curb is meant for drop off, and there’s a lot of yellow curb.

Please don’t use the red curb for drop offs—especially the area right at the beginning of the drop-off horse shoe. This blocks traffic in the intersection.

Keep smiling! You get almost 750 kids in and out each day without a hitch.
