By the time you read this, RMR’s first 50 years willhave ended and the beginning of our next half-centuryhas begun! The 51st year of RMR will be quite ayear; our first event at the new track will be in lateApril, the annual Porsche Parade comes to KeystoneColorado in June and we’ll host our first Club Raceand Super DE at High Plains Raceway in August! The2009 calendar is published in this edition of theNewsletter and on the website www.rmr-porscheclub.com. The schedule is subject to changeso keep an eye on the website, your email and thenewsletter for updates. There are still many oppor-tunities to volunteer to help with a event. Please con-tact anyone on the Board if you’d like to volunteerand we’ll connect you as appropriate; you won’t re-gret getting involved!

With the opening of High Plains Raceway, RMR willfinally have a “home” track after three years withoutone. This means LOTS more events; we’ll have sixevent weekends at HPR with tons of track time forall. I encourage everyone to come out and learn orre-learn what a Porsche (and YOU) can do on thetrack! Our 2008 “Most Improved Driver – Male,”Brent “Surfer Dude” Virts shared his inspired methodfor measuring his continuing improvement as you cansee in the photo. Brent’s Cayman did not come withthe factory “Chrono Package” so Brent installed hisown. It is a simple design with no electronic gizmosto fail or program and can be moved from one vehi-cle to another with little trouble so as Brent upgradesto a GT2 or Turbo he can take the whole device withhim. There is apparently only one drawback; underhigh “G-forces” the built-in alarm sometimes goes offwhich can be a bit distracting. If you happen to seeBrent go off the standard “line” don’t worry, he’sprobably just reaching to reset the alarm!

I’m looking forward to a really great year! See youout there!

Barry KroschelLeadville, Colorado1974 Porsche 911 Slant Nose Yellow

Greetings Rocky Mountain Porschefiles,As we come to the end of the year, it is time to gear up for the 2009 RMR Membership drive. Our duesare currently $20 per year. Although many other regions do not charge dues, our dues help defray the costof our newsletter and reduces the cost of many of our events. Unlike PCA national dues, which are billedannually during the month you joined, all RMR dues are renewed in January of each year.

Reasons to join. As RMR enters our sixth decade, 2009 promises to be an exciting year. We anticipate theopening of our home track, High Plains Raceway this spring. Also RMR will be hosting the annual national2009 Porsche Parade this summer. It will be a great event. We anticipate about 1000 registrants from acrossthe nation as well as distinguished guests from Porsche. For those who have never been to a Parade, itwill be an event not to miss. By joining RMR you will remain in the loop for all of our events and happenings.

Last year we switched to an online registration system for membership. The online system is hosted byMotorsportReg.com, the same site that hosts our event registrations. Most have found this new systemto be much more efficient. Renewal should be easy as well. You will just need to verify your informationand enter your affiliate member information. PLEASE remember to include your PCA Number. Also re-member that the information you enter with be exactly how your mailing address labels and your direc-tory listing will appear.

To Register go to our web site www.rmrporscheclub.com and follow the links. They will take you to Mo-torsportReg.com. If you do not have an account with MotorsportReg, it will ask you to create an accountwith them and then take you to our Membership event registration.

If you are not a member of PCA please go to www.pca.org and register with them first.

If you cannot pay by credit card there will be a provision to send in a check. After signing up, please sendyour check to me (instructions will be on the site). Your registration will not be finalized until I receive yourcheck.

If you renewed by mail last year, I have created an online account for you at MortorsportReg. Your sign-in is your last name and first name with no spaces, lower case. Your password is your PCA number.

If you really can’t register online and must register by mail, please contact me and I will send you a formwith the necessary information I need to process your registration. Again we really encourage membersto use the online system. It is a much more efficient process for club volunteers and should also ensure thatyour information is and remains more accurate.

Please keep your information up to date. You can maintain your information up to date at any time by log-ging on to your MotorsportReg account and changing the information needed. Each newsletter that is re-turned costs the club money.

Membership renewals are due by JANUARY 31, 2008. Please pay on time in order to remain an activeRMR member, continue receiving our monthly newsletter and be included in our membership directory.Should you not renew by the end of March, you will be dropped from our mailing list.

We welcome the following new members who have joined in the last month:

Ram NeneEnglewood, Colorado2002 Porsche 911 Turbo Silver

Eiskhana is a fun day to experience driving on ice.It will be a great opportunity to test your car, yourtires and your skill. We even plan to have a skidpad for you to feel your car's grip limits on ice.

The event will be run like an autocross. Cone chas-ing will be required when you are not driving. Jan-uary in Georgetown is cold and often windy. Planto dress in layers and wear warm boots, hats andgloves.

Eiskhana is not a challenge series event so, whilewe will time your runs, your times will be only forbragging rights and education. Porsches are wel-come, but not required. Bring your winter driverwith snow tires or studded tires.

No pre-tech will be required. Since speeds and g-forces are low, we will not require top tech, buthighly recommend de-cluttering your car beforeyou drive.

Restroom facilities will be available, but there willbe no concessions or refreshments provided.

Hint from the school of (literal) hard knocks: Theice on Georgetown Lake is very slippery. Yourcars won't tip over, but walking can be haz-ardous. Wearing ice grippers on your feet willhelp you stay upright.

Tire Bundling and Other Fun Weekend Activities

Tire bundling will continue throughout the winter at HPR. While conditions at HPR in December and the rest ofthe winter are pretty rough, snow in the port-a-potty, there is a place for people with an interest and desire to help.Volunteers are need for both the heavy work and for those without the desire or muscle to pick up a tire. The peo-ple running the drills work faster when they have a hardware helper. The helper hands them a bolt with a washeror a nut with a washer when needed. This keeps things going and is a key position.

There is a calendar of events involving tires at the track and areas to post comments/suggestions or arrange carpools. Be sure to dress for the weather and the work, use lots of layers of very old clothes, and warm work glovesand a good cap covering your ears. If you have battery powered regular and /or right angle drills be sure to bringthem and the chargers. You can get more info at this web site; http://hprtireguys.yuku.com/directory

Lunch is provided by CAMA so be sure to bring something to drink and that Ted Winning, leader of the Tire BundlingProject, gets your lunch order. Ted can be contacted by email at [email protected] . Ted indicated that thevolunteer teams have probably moved from 12% to 15% of the linear feet of tires bundles needed for the track.

SSttuuttttggaarrtt.. In the new Porsche Museum the finalpreparations are made for the opening on Saturday 31January 2009. At last, now that the scaffolding hasbeen removed, it is possible to see to the full extentthe bold architecture of the building at the head officepremises of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG in Zuffen-hausen: The 5,600 square metres of exhibition spaceare supported on just three so-called cores of rein-forced concrete hence just seeming to hover in space.Inside the building the majority of approximately 80exhibits are already in place.

In the other areas of the new building amongst themthe museum workshops, the museum shop, thePorsche archive, an exclusive restaurant, a bistro andthe capacious event areas a team of experts are busyputting the finishing touches. Three days after the cer-emonial opening, which takes place on Wednesdaythe 28 January 2009, the doors of the new PorscheMuseum will be flung open to welcome the first vis-itors. On a daily basis, apart from Mondays, the exhi-bition can be viewed for an admission price of eightEuros (reduced price: four Euros). Children up to theage of 14 get free admission when accompanied byan adult.

The restaurant on the second floor, which has both aview through the glass facade onto the Porscheplatz,as well as through the glass partition into the exhibi-tion itself, has its own separate entrance and is alsoopen at hours which are different from those of themuseum itself.

With the new museum and its range of catering facil-ities additional capacity for conferences, company andprivate events in exceptional surroundings will comeinto being. We have already received hosts of inquiries.

This award is presented periodically to the person whohas executed the most spectacular spin of the season– without doing damage to the vehicle. This year itwas in Pueblo. It was on turn 9. a true “Porsche Enthusiast” an outstanding contributor to the club very active in club activities, and shows great initiative and organizational talents combined with an infectious, cheerful attitude.

This year’s recipient is very organized, willing to gothe extra mile, risk life and limb, and make sure every-one has what they need for an event. He always hasa smile and is in the ‘thick’ of things, even to lettingsomeone else drive his Porsche to an event while hedrives the equipment truck. An especially memorablemoment was when he drove the Truck up to theState Patrol Track the afternoon before Ladies’ Daywith cold beer for those who were getting ready forthe event … then left to go to a dress-up event fromthere. I first started admiring Porsches as a freshman at CU.In fact, my Porsche "precursor" was a VW bug. Ispent many hours "souping" up the engine, with dualcarbs and all, such that many people thought it wasa 356 engine! I never dynoed it, but estimated thatI had bumped the horsepower all the way up to 60hp! Imagine that!

With that, I spent many hours sitting around Willardhall reading car magazines, dreaming of having aPorsche, and talking with my resident advisor, ourown Randy Hoch, about Porsches! Talk about a smallworld! In 1968, in this dream mode, I even drovedown from Boulder to Bob Hagestad Porsche, whichis now Prestige Imports, to "test drive" a new 911S.Here I was, 18 years old, swaggering up to the sales-man, pretending I could actually afford one, asking fora test drive. Surprisingly, he humored me! After driv-ing it up Sixth Ave relatively timidly, the salesmantold me to "pull over" so he could show me how thecar really ran. Wow! I would always remember thatride that evening!

I kept dreaming for another 26 years until I boughtmy first Porsche- a red '84 Carrera Targa. I actuallylet my now ex-wife drive it most of the time, since itwas a bit small for me to be hauling kids to schooland clients to meetings. When Fernando Ospina, whois still a club member, found out that I had a Porsche,he pestered me for about two years to join the club. But, I guess I was always too busy and never gotaround to it.

It wasn't until after I got divorced, and drove up tothe tennis court in the same '84 Targa to play amatch with George Peabody, that he enlightened meon the thrills of DE's (racing, I called it), that I finallydecided to join the club. That was 1998.

That year, I did my first DE at Pueblo. It was thebiggest adrenaline rush I've ever experienced! WaltFricke was my first instructor, and he must have got-ten quite a rush, too, since I spun off the track be-tween Turns 5 and 6a. Yeah, I lifted! I survived myfirst DE, though, and have been hooked ever since. The next year, I entered my first Club Race, the lastto be held at Second Creek. I had made the mini-mum safety modifications to my '84 Targa, passed

the physical, and went for it! The next big rush! Igot third in class and Club Race's Rookie of the Raceaward! Now, I was hooked on racing, and have beenever since!

I quickly realized the limitations of a Targa as a racecar, and soon found a '77 3.0 Carrera coupe, whichI have spent 9 years modifying here and there untilI've done all that can be done and still stay in stockclass. I just love that car, and its the red 441 car thatyou'll see me with at the DE's and club races. That carand I , in 10 years of racing, have won many podiumfinishes, including several first places in our class.

In 2000, I started getting more active in the club, be-coming program chairman. I held that position until2007, when I was elected to the RMR Board of Di-rectors as Secretary. During my stint as programchairman, I also chaired several Club Race DE's. I amcurrently Treasurer for the club, and will gladly startnext year as Second VP.

While I was getting more active in the club, I wasbecoming more active in my love affair withPorsches. The year I started club racing, I bought abeautiful, blue '96 993 C2. But, living in the moun-tains, on a road that required all wheel drive in thewinter meant I could only drive that car 3 or 4months a year. So, in 2002, I picked up a new '02Carrera 4S in Germany, and drove it all around Eu-rope with my son, Michael. Driving 150 mph on theautobahn- another awesome thrill!

That car being all wheel drive gave me my dailydriver, and, as Andy Forberg can attest, I put 111,000miles on it in five years! She was definitely not agarage queen, as drove her all year long, snow orshine!

I wasn't done, however, and picked up an inexpen-sive '84 944 for Michael to drive on the track, and abeautifully maintained '79 911SC for my daughterTina to drive. I eventually sold the 944 to Michaellast year, and Tina wants to buy the '79 next yearwhen she graduates from CSU.

Finally, last year, I decided to sell my '02 C4S to AndyForberg, to pick up an '08 Carrera 4S in Germany, this time with my wife, Teresa. Same thrills, 140MPH, two weeks and 2500 miles with an awesomecar and a wonderful wife to share the experiencewith!

Despite all I have described, however, one of themost satisfying things I have done for the club is toprovide the engineering for the design of the new

track. To watch this wonderful amenity evolve, fromtalk, ideas and dreams, through hours of problemsolving and frustrations, to finally a paved and usabletrack, has been an incredible pleasure! Now, mindyou, I get this kind of pleasure with most projectsthat I work on- that's why I love engineering. But, towork on the track, with the end result being some-thing on which I can exercise one of my great pas-sions, and knowing that all my friends and fellowclub members will be experiencing the same exhila-ration on this great track, is a special kind of pleas-ure that one doesn't get to experience every day.

In fact, and in summary, working with this club overthe years has been a great pleasure, and I look for-ward to many more years of the same.

My first car was a 1953 Studebaker ChampionCoupe, secondly a 1948 Chevy Coupe, followed by a1959 round-back 544 Volvo and a 1957 MGA con-vertible (all before my 18th birthday!). A fellow navalreserve friend wanted to trade his 1955 356 PorscheCoupe for my 1957 MGA and $500. My MGA wasin great condition so I declined, however, I loved howthe Porsche handled. How dumb was I not to takehim up on his offer??? I would love to own that samecar today !!

In 1974 I bought a black on black 1973 914 Porscheand drove it until our second daughter was born –Judy thought it was then time for a more practical2nd car. It was a Volvo, but I vowed that the first carwe would buy once our youngest was off to collegewould be another Porsche.

In 1995 I found the perfect 1989 Carrera Targa 911which we still own and has won many concoursawards. In 2000 we added a Boxster to our stable. Our favorite RMR/AMR events are tours, rallyes, driv-ers’ ed, and concours. LLoowweerriinngg yyoouurr PPoorrsscchhee ffoorr DDEE TTrraacckk EEvveennttssLowering a Porsche can be worthwhile to obtain bet-ter handling and feel while driving on the track at DEevents. A lowered car is also more fun for “spiriteddriving” over twisty roads encountered while touringthrough the countryside. Another benefit is the “cool”factor of a lowered Porsche. Change in aestheticscan be dramatic when lowering your car.

Most people want to lower their car to obtain thebenefit of a lower center of gravity without sacrific-ing comfort and the ability to drive the car on thestreet. The first decision when lowering a vehicle isto determine not only how much to lower the car, but, what sacrifices you are willing to accept for streetdriving after lowering your Porsche.

Simple things like just entering and exiting the vehi-cle need to be taken onto account when consideringlowering your Porsche. Rolling out of a loweredPorsche in evening wear can be difficult when goingout to dinner or a movie! A good compromise is tojust lower your Porsche to “European” ride heightwith slightly stiffer springs obtained from a qualitysource or factory parts. Also, installing larger diam-

eter sway bars to the package will complement thelowering of the car in almost all cases.

I have lowered every 911 we have owned and will re-late my personal experience on driving lowered carson the street. The biggest obstacle is one most peo-ple have never thought about when lowering any car. Those nasty concrete parking curbs found in almostevery parking lot!

Originally, I had my green ’70 911 lowered as far aspossible primarily for track use. The unintended con-sequence was every when we drove the car on thestreet, the front spoiler would smack right into thosedevilish parking curbs. After a short period of time, Ifound it necessary to raise the car up to clear thosedestructive parking curbs and save the front body-work.

Lowering any car usually involves installing stiffersprings or torsion bars. The primary reason stiffersprings are necessary is because lowering a car resultsin reduced suspension travel unless new suspensioncomponents are used. Many of the parts suppliers

can provide suspension kits to lower your Porsche. Some of these kits utilize struts (or shocks) with wheelspindles relocated to maintain a decent amount ofsuspension travel. Of course, the price for the kit iscommensurate with the amount of special compo-nents included in the suspension package. However, this is usually the best way to obtain a well engi-neered result for a dual purpose street/track car.

Also, remember to cut down the original rubber orurethane bump stops or replace them with new partsto allow the suspension to travel freely while drivingthe car on the highway. This step is easily forgottenand can have detrimental consequences. If the sus-pension is contacting the bump stops in the static po-sition, the car will ride like a dump truck! If the rearsuspension is resting on the stops, the car may havean increased amount of oversteer which can makethe car very difficult to drive and may lead to an ac-cident.

bit more on the inside of the tire. If the tires have anon-directional tread pattern, they can be dismountedand turned inside to outside to obtain more tread life.DOT track tires require more camber to obtain all ofthe available traction. The DOT track tire spec sheetwill give you a suggested range for camber settingsfor these tires. Sometimes a quick phone call to thetire supplier or reputable shop is worthwhile to get anidea what camber settings other people have usedon a specific car.

If we take a look at the different alignment specifi-cations for the Porsche 993 and 993 RS, the factoryengineers have a good approach to the vehicle low-ering and suspension alignment procedure you canadopt. The standard alignment and ride height set-tings are given for the USA version of the car to ob-tain even tire wear under normal street drivingconditions. The 993 RS Euro version of the car isquite a bit lower with more camber for the more ag-gressive RS type of driver. More of the available cor-nering force is utilized by this type of driver and thetread wear will be relatively even.

I’m sure there are more factors to consider when low-ering your Porsche. Be sure you are realistic whenevaluating your vehicle usage before having your carlowered. There have been many people who havespent a lot of time and money to lower their car andinstall sport suspension. After a couple of years ofliving with the car, have had the car changed back tothe original height and alignment settings just to beable to enjoy the car again on the highway.

Bump steer may be a problem if a car is lowered dra-matically. Bump steer is basically defined as thesteering effect of the wheels on the front suspensionas they travel up and down while driving the vehicle. This “steering” effect is felt during cornering, espe-cially when driving a car on the track and can be un-settling to a driver. A bump steer kit can be obtainedfor many cars to raise the position of the steering rackby adding spacers under the steering rack. This mod-ification changes the geometry of the steering armto minimize the amount of toe change (bump steer)when the front wheels are deflected. Many of thesuspension kits have relocated steering arms designedto reduce bump steer eliminating the need for spacers.

After lowering the car the desired amount, the vehi-cle should be realigned. Again, a determination needsto be made on how the car is to be used. If a persondrives the car everyday with an occasional DE event, the suspension should be set for obtain decent tirewear. A slightly more aggressive approach is to alignthe car with a bit more camber to obtain more gripon the track and accept the fact the tires will wear a

iinn tthheezzoonnee ......Some of you have heard that I’ve been appointed theZone 9 PCA rep for the next two years and have is-sued congratulations, usually followed by the ques-tion: so what is a Zone Rep? That’s a good questionand one that I’ll be answering myself in the comingmonths and years. After I attend the Zone Rep Collegein New Orleans in February, I’ll be better able to an-swer that question, but for now, I’ll take the easy wayout and talk about PCA structure and draw upon someanswers given to me by previous Zone Reps KathyFricke, Howard Burr, Dale Thero, and Larry Pittsley.

The Porsche Club of America is the largest single-marque car club in the world with al-most 58,000 primary members and over 100,000 members when you include familymembers and significant others. To run an organization of this size, especially one thatoffers so many activities to its members, requires a strong infrastructure. Hence, thePCA has an executive committee that includes a President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary, and an Executive Director (the guy who keeps everything running from day to day). The Executive Director and his small staff are the only paid employees. All the rest arevolunteers. Take a look in the back of your Panorama Magazine sometime to see howmany people it takes to make it go at the National Level, then multiply that by all thegreat people who keep the Regions going. It’s pretty impressive.

The next level of participation and oversight are the Zone Reps. Because PCA takes inall of the USA and Canada and there are 139 Regions, it would be a little much to justhave the Executive Board try to keep track of everything that goes on. Hence, PCA isdivided into 13 Zones, each of which is comprised of several regions. Our Zone 9 is com-prised of 7 Regions: Llano Estacado, West Texas, Carrera, Roadrunner, Alpine Moun-tain, Rocky Mountain, and Intermountain. Our Region stretches from all the way downnear Big Bend country, through New Mexico, Colorado, and into Utah and Wyoming! That’s a huge geographic area for a Zone. But there are other large geographic Zones,so we’re not alone. Take a look sometime at the Region Directory at PCA.org some-time to get an idea of scale. One Zone Rep has the job of representing Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. I’m guessing s/he doesn’t drive the Porsche on those trips….

The Zone Rep acts as a member of the PCA Board. As Kathy Fricke noted in a pieceshe wrote for me a few years ago, “Zone Representatives work long hours and spendmany weekends traveling the highways and byways going to and from regional andnational events. Because the Zone Rep is in the best position to know their Regions,we may be called upon by National council members or committee chairmen to assistin various special situations. We also serve as regional Safety Observers if we are pres-ent at an event.” What the description does not address is the fact that for manymembers we are the only PCA National representative they may have convenient ac-cess to. In most regional disputes the Zone Rep will act as the catalyst, the arbitra-tor, and at times the person in the middle between the member regions and theExecutive Council.

Zone Reps are responsible for assisting the Regions in any way they can, and try tohelp ensure the general welfare of each of the regions in their Zone. We try to meetwith each Region President a minimum of once a year, but usually more often. We so-licit written regional proxies for all national Board of Directors meetings, after givingexplanations of known issues prior to the National Board meetings. We have monthlyconference calls with the other twelve Zone Reps and this year’s new PCA President,Kurt Gibson. Many hours are spent at the computer answering email and writing Quar-terly reports.ries are skiing at Alta and Snowbird and racing on the Bonneville SaltFlats.

I’m really looking forward to the new challenge of being Zone 9 Rep, since the duties willput me in touch with an ever larger group of great people in our corner of the PCA world.I haven’t had much opportunity to spend time in Texas, so I’m sure I’ll be learning much, much more about that part of our country. Obviously, I’ve been neck-deep in the Road-runner Region for the past several years and I look forward to serving our Region in a newand different role. Both Sandra and I lived in Colorado for a good part of our lives, so we’reboth eager to spend more time up there visiting, touring, and meeting people. And thoughI haven’t spent a lot of time in Utah, some of my best memoies are skiing at Alta andSnowbird and racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Hopefully this will answer some of your questions. Next month I’ll let you in on more asI learn and grow into the position.

Winter is upon us in Colorado! Most know the importance of checking your car con-dition prior to heading out in winter weather and driving conditions. The typical listincludes a check of windshield wipers, washer fluid, snow or studded tires, snowscraper, shovel, battery condition, and perhaps an emergency kit with a blanket, emergency signals, flashlight, etc. You get the picture and are used to looking atyour vehicle for these items and their condition.

Perhaps you have never been to a PCA driving event and are wondering about this“Tech Inspection” stuff. Simply, the Tech Inspection is designed to have a good lookover your Porsche and correct any deficiencies with an eye on what can and fre-quently fails on a vehicle driven on a race track. Any items that are found needing tobe repaired or replaced are required to be fixed before your Porsche is permitted onthe track for an event.

RMR and AMR have put together a Pre-Tech Inspection Form which allows the in-spector to check off on critical areas. The inspector may be a local qualified shop oranother club member trained in Tech Inspection. The inspector will do their best toidentify any deficiencies that need immediate correction as well as items you shouldbe aware of and plan to correct in the near future. If you are unsure of your cars con-dition and what the inspector is looking at, this is a great time to ask questions learnsome more about your Porsche.

Your preparations for “Track Driving” should include a look and understanding of theoverall condition of your Porsche. Some important items just can’t be determined bya visual and you will need to know the history instead. A check of the engine oil levelshould be done and if you don’t know when the oil and filter were changed, thisshould be one of the first items completed. Low oil level or poor oil condition canquickly ruin a driving season. The condition of the brake fluid needs to be determinedbefore you head into a corner and find you have boiled your brake fluid and have no

brakes. Change the brake fluid out and keep a record of the change dates. Many ofthose driving on a track change or bleed their brakes prior to each event. Brake fluidthat is old and dirty can be quite a scary experience.

Items that can easily and quickly checked visually; include tire wear, brake pad wear, belt expiration dates, a loose battery, brake lights, loose belts, excessive oil leakage, and general cleanliness. A Tech Inspection at one of the designated shops will allowyou to see your car up on a lift and get a good look at the drive train, engine, andsuspension. These inspections are held 10 days prior to an event and allow time forrepairs prior to the event. This is a great way to get to know your Porsche, meet otherclub members, and see the trick things they have done to improve the track per-formance. The message here is to know your cars condition before heading to thetrack! Occasionally in a rush, some have traveled a great distance for an event, onlyto not pass Tech Inspection because of an item such as tire wear or wheel bearings. These are not the easiest to correct once you’re at the track. Worse yet is being onthe track and having a loss of brakes and damaging your self, your car, or someoneelse’s day! Make my day, and know your Porsche!
