Raising awareness
At first, an untiring campaign was
launched to recruit students. Now thatawareness of this initiative and itsmission has spread, it is the womenwho are requesting to join the classes.
There are currently 26 women in thegroup, but more are expected to enroll.
The project is open to all the women of
Gulabgarh, the only condition being thatthey attend classes regularly.
Teacher and students
Smt. Pama Lamo is the dedicated
teacher. She conducts the classes bothin the morning and afternoon sessions.
The school is open daily from 10 to 12am and from 1 to 4 pm.
Most women attend the afternoonsession and study from 2 to 3 hours.
Who supervises the donations?
Funds are administered by a committeeof nine prominent community membersincluding:
Mr. Roshan Lal, President,
Mr. Tashi Chering, Chairman
Mr. Charing Angchuck, Gen. Secretary
Mr. Madan Lal, Treasurer
Mr. Tenzen Dorjay, Advisor
Mr. Swami Raj, Mr. Tenzen Yodan, Mrs.Dekit Angdol, Mrs. Sunita Devi
In addition to the chairman Mr. Tashi
Chering, who is a mountaineer and
guide and lives in this village, Mari C. de
la Fuente Leis, an English teacher from
Spain is the main sponsor of the
project. She visited the school in
Gulabgarh in the summer of 2011 and
talked to the members of the board
and the women. She can confirm that
the money is arriving safely at the
proper destination and is directly
benefitting the women.
When I participated in the exciting but at
times grueling treks in Ladakh and Paddar
with Mr. Chering, I learned to trust him as
leader of our expeditions. After visiting the
Womens Literacy Project of Gulabgarh,
which Tashi launched and currently
presides over, I know that I can trust him
as leader of this education initiative.
In India, when you educate a man you are educating an individual, but
when you educate a woman, you are educating an entire community.
