Journalism Blues- N Niranjan NikamJourney of a Journo-

He is one of us. It is home-coming for him. Yes we are talking about N Niranjan Nikam who was a member of Rotary Mysore Midtown for about ten years. Born in Mysuru

t hon 14 February 1955, senior journalist Nikam did his schooling in CKC, Demonstration Multipurpose School, Sarada Vilas High School and his graduation from Sarada Vilas

College and post graduation in Philosophy from Manasagangothri, University of Mysore.

An IIT (Kanpur) dropout, he had spent the better part of his life as a businessman running a small handicrafts shop along with his father on Dhanavanthri Road. At the age of 40, he became a journalist by chance than by choice. Nikam has dabbled in many other profess ions—he was a communications manager in IVAC, a PRO in Vidya Vikas Institution, even worked briefly in a garment unit and granite unit. But he found his true calling in Journalism when he started his new career in Star of Mysore. He gives the entire credit to Rotary Club of Mysore Midtown for this change in his life.

He moved to Bangalore at the age of 49 when he joined Vijay Times and finally retired as the Chief of Bureau, Deccan Herald in Mysore. Nikam is currently the Consultant, Centenary Celebrations, University of Mysore, driving the celebrations.

Interviewed celebrities like Rekha, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Anupam Kher, Kabir Bedi, Kannada thespian Dr Rajkumar, Cinephotographer and Dada Saheb Phalke award winner V K Murthy, to name a few. Also writes human interest stories. Given talks on All India Radio and

Midtown proudly welcomes –our own Mr. Niranjan Nikam.

Masthalli-2015, are you ready

Then the next Mast was in 2012-13 during Rtn. Raaghu's time – which was again a block buster. Raaghu with his uncanny abilities of bringing people together and raising funds brought out a hit - Masthalli event. The then DG H.L. Ravi himself thoroughly enjoyed the event being present at the venue throughout. There was an enthusiastic participation from many clubs of the zone in spite of overcast skies.

After three years Prez Venky plans to bring back those glorious moments. Event chairman Rtn. Umesh wants to give rehearsal for his organizing capabilities before he takes up the Presidentship . Event is

ndscheduled on 22 Sunday. Venue is our familiar

Masthalli village. Being a Zonal fellowship event , subscription of Rs. 350 for Midtown Rotarians is mandatory (I think nobody will mind). Expected participation is around 300. Entertainment for the full family is guaranteed. For the kids- day out at Masthalli before the annual exams will be refreshing. So what are you waiting for – pull out your village attire, practice some rustic village language, loosen you hips for the country dance to the tune of thamate.…….I have pulled photos from the archives of Nandoo and Raaghu. May be these photos of previous Masthalli carnival will inspire you and give some ideas for the freshers in the club.

Midtown braces for the Masthalli Jatre. One event in Midtown –which has drawn the attention of whole district is Masthalli Jatre. Fellowship reaches its climax during this one day event. My first experience was during Nandoo's period way back in 2003-04. The amount of creativity seen during this festival in creating a real village like scenario in the Ursu Gymkhana club was amazing. Whole lot of District and zonal leaders participated with full gusto and their village attire is still fresh in my memory. Perhaps Nandoo should have won the best club award in that year just for this event. After all what we enjoy in Rotary is the fellowship and especially in Midtown it is showcased through this mega event.

Rotarians said itRotarians said it

· I've heard stories that have made me laugh, and stories that have moved me to tears. I've

heard stories of how our service changes the lives of others, and how

i t changes us as Rotarians. When I hear these stories, I can't help but wonder: How many other lives could we change for the better by bringing more people into Rotary? And how many more people could we bring into Rotary simply by sharing our own Rotary stories?
