Finding the Talent

We received over 1000 entries for the programme, with a team of readers helping us to shortlist down to 20 writers. Each writer submitted a treatment with 15 sample pages, as well as a biog and two other ideas for a series.

The shortlisted writers were invited for an interview in April 2017, with a commissioner from the BBC (Jay Davidson) joining the panel, along with Minnie Ayres and Fraser Ayres from the TCN.

The six selected writers were announced at the end of April 2017. http://thetcn.com/triforce-incubator-finalists-announced/

Winning best film at the film festival a few years ago was such anhonour. For me TCN is a game-changer. What they have achieved in15 years is really quite incredible and they are going from strengthto strength. TCN is all about inclusion and I have never felt soincluded and supported by a festival. They have continued tosupport, encourage and champion my work, and I will be eternallygrateful.

TCN networking events have enabled me to build up contacts withinthe industry. They personally introduced me to experiencedprofessionals who I hope to work with in the future. Since workingwith TCN I have feel my confidence as a filmmaker has grown andbelieve that anything is possible. They have been really supportivewith my debut feature and kindly screened the trailer at the festivallast year.

My short film 'Sunny Boy' that won the TriForce Short Film Festivalgot picked up and broadcast on CH4 and ARTE TV. I have made myfirst feature film 'My Feral Heart' and now developing my second.

WriterSlam provides routes of access to writers from all backgrounds, across the UK, that solves many of the obstacles that diverse or emerging talent face.

Already the outcomes have been ground-breaking, with people being taken from ‘bedroom to broadcast’.

Open to all and with a focus on tangible outcomes (direct commissions, development, mentoring with execs etc.) we receive 1000’s of entries from not only industry professionals (and some that may have fallen through the gaps) but school teachers, traffic wardens, parents, people in their bedroom with only a good idea, a plethora of young talent and an incredibly broad spread across ethnicity, gender and class.

Through a robust filtering process that ensures different states of ‘readiness’ are clearly identified, we work with our partners to facilitate not only the winners but also those shortlisted who show promise.

WriterSlam has been supported by ITV and ITV Studios, the BBC, Sky, Tiger Aspect, Hat Trick, Sky, Channel 4and of course TriForce Productions.

My experience working with TCN was phenomenal. It was the first time that I felt appreciated andunderstood as a creative person, and trusted toprovide exceptional results on task. Sometimes oneneeds a little boost of trust, guidance andopportunity from experienced industryprofessionals, and TCN delivered.

I’ve since worked as a floor runner for the BBC andGrafton House productions, a development assistantfor Howard Overman, and an Office Manager forUrban Myth Films. I am now in talks with a Londonbased animation production company to hopefullyto hopefully join the creative development team ontheir next 2018 commission.

Supported by Red Planet Pictures, TriForce Productions focus on creating inclusive content for mainstream audiences.

Tony Jordan, MD of Red Planet Pictures, says; “I have followed the TCN’s work over the years and have always seen them as a driven company, genuinely invested in the development of talent and in changing the face of our industry for the better. The issue with diversity in the industry is not a lack of talent, just a lack of avenues for that talent to be reached. The TCN are opening up those avenues. We are delighted to provide creative backing to TriForce Productions, to help broadcasters access that talent and engage their audiences with programming that better reflects our contemporary culture.”

We aim to find new ways to approach the commissioning process by actively engaging with broadcasters to offer the solution to them achieving and surpassing the new diversity targets recently set; in front of and behind the camera.

With an eye on developing content across a range of genres for UK and US broadcasters, we are already in talks with key channels about a number of projects with the aim of bringing a diversity of experience – not just a change in palette.

Our first commission was a comedy panel show for ITV about black history: Sorry, I Didn’t Know…History with a touch of colour. For a taster of our work, check out the

trailer here: Sorry, I Didn't Know Trailer
