Black Sheep Harley Davidsons For Christ / November 2015 1 About this Newsletter Welcome! If you would like to receive this free monthly newsletter by email, simply let us know by contacting our office: 951-677-1407 [email protected] Speak Up And Save A Biker’s Life Marty Edwards I am becoming increasingly wary and (I confess) angry at the number of avoidable motorcycle accidents caused by clueless drivers. I am struggling more every day to accept the lame excuse, “I didn’t see them!” The most common scenarios include (a) a motorist turning left in front of a bike at an intersection and (b) a motorist changing lanes without looking. Our friends are being maimed, dismembered and far too often killed. A Black Sheep member was just coming into a left hand turn lane when an SUV to his right crossed three lanes and took him out. A friend of BSHDFC had a similar accident where a large truck changed lanes suddenly and took his right leg and a finger off. Just last week I was entering the freeway onramp on my left when a distracted driver crossed three lanes to make a last minute effort to enter the freeway as well. As our eyes met he just kept mouthing to me the words, “I am sorry! I am so sorry.” I’m not a safety officer by any means, but I do have an opinion about such matters after serving in BSHDFC for the last sisteen years. TAKE THE SAFETY CLASSES! Always say a prayer before throwing a leg over the saddle. Ride well rested, well fed, sober and well armored. Do everything you possibly can to be seen and heard. Slow down and scan the road in front and to both sides. Keep a sensible distance between you and the traffic ahead Your passenger needs to be active, watching for dangers Assume drivers aren’t looking because they aren’t. Speak up and begin to make our case heard. Speak up and begin to make our case heard: We all have a circle of influence; at school, work, church or even with extended family members. Speak up for biker safety! Tell your friends and family… to watch for bikers and give them plenty of space! to get off the phone and not text while driving! to STOP completely and not CRAWL at stop signs! Once last thing: It used to be that a driver would (a) look over their shoulder and (b) then begin their roll on the steering wheel to make a lane change. Things are moving so much faster in our lives these days, people (especially young people) are (at best) looking over their shoulders and SIMULTANEOUSLY turning their steering wheels. That means by the time they do see a biker, it’s too late.” They can honestly say, “I never saw them!” because they didn’t look until the damage was done. Tell your friends and family to look BEFORE committing to a lane change! The Bible tells us to “be angry and sin not.” That’s good, because I’m angry – and I probably sound angry when I’m relaying the four bullet points above to people patient enough to sit and listen to my rants. I am encouraging us all to (a) be safer on the road ourselves and (b) educate those in cages – before they kill someone. Speak up people! Tell the stories and educate the public on how NOT to kill a biker.

Speak Up And Save A Biker’s LifeMarty EdwardsI am becoming increasingly wary and (I confess) angry at the number of avoidable motorcycle accidents caused by clueless drivers.

I am so sorry.”

I’m not a safety officer by any means, but I do have an opinion about such matters after serving in BSHDFC for the last sisteen years.

Things are moving so much faster in our lives these days, people (especially young people) are (at best) looking over their shoulders and SIMULTANEOUSLY turning their steering wheels. committing to a lane change!

Black Sheep Harley Davidsons For Christ / November 2015

Meet the Prez Featuring Sharron Pearson from our San Jose, CA chapter. How long have you been a member of Black Sheep? Dale and I joined Black Sheep in 2008. I have since been Treasurer, Vice-President and President. When did you become President for San Jose chapter? I have been President for the past two years. Interestingly, the San Jose Chapter tries to rotate all the leadership positions to let everyone

who wants to, be whatever they want. How long have you been riding? I actually first rode when I was very young - 11 years old, unbeknownst to my parents! I got my first motorcycle at age 15, a Honda 90. I then got a Honda CB360 to ride through college. When I was 21, my 24 year old brother was killed on a motorcycle. I sold my bike and didn't ride again until 2003. I currently ride a 2011 Harley-Davidson Streetglide with a 103cc engine. It is a beautiful Sedona orange. This is my third Harley. I had a Deluxe for 7 years and my first Harley was a Sportster, which I only rode for a year. Tell us a little about yourself and your family. Dale and I have been very happily married for 11 years. I have two grown daughters from my first marriage: Marina, aged 35 and Vanessa, aged 34. Marina is married to Jason and they have 3 beautiful daughters: Layla, 6, Bria, 4, and Maya, 2. Vanessa is in a relationship, but is not yet married. Dale and I moved to Morgan Hill 3 years ago so we could be close to our family. My role as "Nama" has been one of my favorites! Tell us about your experience with Black Sheep. That's a tall order! I absolutely love the Black Sheep family because it combines my love of the Lord with my love of riding my motorcycle. I find that being a Black Sheep opens a lot of conversation doors. I think my favorite things have been the events where I am in service - working a booth, shining boots, helping HOG with their events or serving pancakes - and I get to talk about WHY I do what I do. Of course, then I get to talk about my love of the Lord! I also love the opportunity to meet with 400 other sheep at our annual Leadership Summit. I pray I will have the opportunity to go next year :)

Meet our Area Reps Featuring Bruce Belin from Crane, MO How long have you been a member of Black Sheep? I went through the mentorship process and was patched in 2012 at a breakfast meeting in Columbia. How long have you been riding? I have been using my motorcycle as a ministry tool since about 1979. What bike do you ride? I ride a 09 Deluxe. This is my 5th Harley, started on a shovel in 1982. Started riding motorcycles in 1970 with a Honda 125 Scrambler. Have ridden Triumphs (2), Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasaki, BMW, I still love to ride.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family. I am a bi vocational pastor, I work as a detective for the Sheriffs Office here. I have been the minister here at Crane Christian Church for 12 years. My wife Kim is a Social Worker, we have 4 kids with one still at home. Kim has started riding again after about a 25 year break. Part of our dating life in the 70's was on a motorcycle. We are on Facebook, Email or call and come see us in the Ozarks. I believe we live in some of the best riding in the USA!!! Tell us a little about your experience with Black Sheep: Black Sheep HDFC has provided me assistance as I minister to people in this area. Marty and Jim came to Crane and we had a great hamburger fry last year. The fact that they came here loved, served and ministered to me and my family here, spoke more than any sermon could have. We have about 3 large events a year, one toy run, one cancer run and a "Biker Sunday". We also participate in other toy runs and events in the area. This year Kim and I got to go to Sturgis, I rode the bike up Wednesday and was able to minister at the 'shine" booth Thursday. What a blessing to be able to work with the guys up there. We had our annual toy run in Nov and had a good turnout and were able to minister, feed and love a wide variety of riders.

The Star of Bethlehem, also called the Christmas Star, revealed the birth of Jesus to the Biblical Magi, and later led them to Bethlehem.

Devine Appointments happen in the strangest places…

Ok, here's a strange interruption in my evening tonight…

I was rear-ended tonight on my bike. By God's grace I did not go down as I had not completely stopped and accelerated away but not before sustaining some minor damage to the bike and my leg is sore. Ouch.

Things could have been so much worse. Here's the kicker. After exchanging info with the driver, I gave him a Black Sheep King of Hearts card and my testimony. I shared the gospel with him and then prayed with him to receive Christ. After that, I told him if he wanted to talk, he didn't have to hit my bike to get me to stop!

Please pray for Manny as he is going through some stuff and is looking for God's peace.
