The Orchestra was founded in 1964 and prides itself on providing the community with local access to quality classical music. The Orchestra presents four concerts a year of classical and lighter classical music where talented young musicians as well as professional soloists of repute are featured. The Orchestra also presents annual concerts for the Phillip Island Arts and Cultural Committee at Cowes and for a Croydon retirement village. Our program also includes a bi-annual choral concert collaborating with community choirs. These combined performances have included Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’, Puccini’s ‘Messa di Gloria’ and Handel’s ‘Messiah’. The Orchestra has a growing reputation. This is partly due to the enthusiastic and expert guidance of Musical Director, Willem van der Vis, and the quality of musicians the Orchestra attracts. The Orchestra is based in Ringwood and membership is open (but not restricted) to residents in Melbourne’s eastern corridor with musicians ranging from senior secondary students to mature age. 2015 Concert Series Membership New members are warmly welcomed. We do not audition, but players should feel comfortable meeting the challenge of playing a wide variety of symphonic repertoire. Membership is confirmed after a successful trial period which includes one concert. There is a waiting list in some sections of the Orchestra. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 8.00pm to 10.15pm at Maroondah Federation Estate, Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood. 2015 SEASON

Musical Director: Willem van der VisNew Zealand born Willem van der Vis gained a B. Sc (Hons) in physics before deciding to focus on his real passion, which was music. Soon he was playing principal cello with the Scholar Musica (New Zealand Symphony Training Orchestra) and the Dunedin Sinfonia. In 1979 Willem moved to Australia, where he became a member of the Western Australian Orchestra for 7 years. In addition he has played with Orchestra Victoria, the New Zealand, Tasmanian and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.

As an orchestral cellist, he was fascinated by how a conductor interacted with and communicated music to the Orchestra, and this led to him to complete his B. Mus (conducting) at WAAPA and the VCA (Robert Rosen). Conducting studies followed in Moscow, England and the Czech Republic and he enjoyed further studies with Professor John Hopkins in Melbourne.

Willem has conducted the Stonnington, Heidelberg, New Monash, Ballarat and Derwent (Hobart) Symphony Orchestras. In addition he has conducted the Murray Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra and Choral Society (Albury NSW), Two Murray River ‘Three Choirs’ Festivals, Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra, Margaret Sutherland Strings as well as many stage shows.

Willem is now Musical Director of the Maroondah Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Conductor for Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. He regularly conducts the U3A Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Kooyong Chamber Players. Every year he conducts at Orchestral workshops and music camps around Australia. He is also in demand as an adjudicator, and holds workshops in Orchestral conducting.

Leader of the Orchestra: Tania VethanayagamThe Orchestra is thrilled to have someone as accomplished as Tania Vethanayagam as its Leader.

Tania obtained both an LRSM Performer in Violin (Royal Schools London) and ATCL Performer in Violin (Trinity College London) in1987. She also gained an LTCL Performer in Piano (Trinity College London) in 1989. Tania joined the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka in 1981 and in 1987 went on to become Leader of the Orchestra. In 1985 she represented Sri Lanka at the ‘World Philharmonic Orchestra’s’ premiere concert in Stockholm.

Tania migrated in 2002 and joined the Maroondah Symphony Orchestra in 2008.
