A B O U T T H E F E S T I V A L

The Music Festival is divided into five sections with an adjudicator for each one: Piano, Brass, Woodwind, Vocal and Strings. We have five professional musicians coming to adjudicate throughout the weekend. The adjudicators will listen and give feedback to all of our applicants and award medals to performers who they feel are particularly outstanding. Every performer will receive written feedback and a certificate.

Each instrument section has various classes ranging from pre grade 1 to advanced level. The winner of the Challenge Cup Class (grade 7-8) will receive a trophy alongside their certificate. The adjudicator from each section will choose one overall section winner, this person can be from any of the classes in that section apart from the ensemble classes. Each section winner will perform in the Winners Concert at 5.00pm on Sunday 5th March in Saffron Hall. The adjudicators will award medals to performers they are particularly impressed with.

The Festival culminates in a Winners’ Concert. (5.00pm on Sunday 5th March) Please do come and support the section winners at this Concert.

The five section winners that the adjudicators have chosen will all perform in a Young Musician of the Year style final. An overall winner is chosen by the panel of adjudicators and is then awarded the Mullucks Wells Trophy.

Please feel free to come and listen to any of the classes throughout the weekend, and of course the Prize Winners Concert which is on Sunday at 5.00pm in Saffron Hall.

ADJUDICATOR : EDDIE THOMPSON

After studying trombone & composition at the Royal College of Music, Eddie enjoyed a career as a professional musician spanning almost 50 years, working in recording studios, television, radio & West End theatres. He was assistant conductor for the musical “Canterbury Tales” and Musical Director to Les Dawson when aged 24. Since then he spent many years playing, arranging & recording

with innumerable well known artists including Bing Crosby, Diana Ross, Johnny Mathis, Shirley McLean & The Carpenters to name just a few and was The orchestral manager for several film productions, including “There’s a Girl in my Soup” starring Peter Sellers.

He travelled the world with the Gabrielli Brass Ensemble before forming and directing The English Brass Group. This group gave lecture demonstrations on British, French and Canadian T.V. and featured in episodes of “Grange Hill & “Some Mothers do Have em”, with music written or arranged by Eddie.

He examined Diploma candidates and was Brass syllabus consultant for a London Conservatoire. He taught Brass instruments in Hertfordshire & Essex and frequently coached the Brass sections of their county orchestras and directed various brass ensembles. Whilst working at the London Palladium Eddie directed The Big Band at the London College of Music and The Morley College Jazz Orchestra on Saturday mornings.

ADJUDICATOR : GRAEME HUMPHREY

Graeme Humphrey has been a teacher of piano all his professional life, both at the Royal Academy of Music for thirty-six years from 1974 - 2010, and privately. He has also been very actively involved in festival adjudicating and examining - work which has taken him to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Italy, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, France, Sabah, Sri Lanka, Japan, Thailand and Ghana.

He was awarded an Associated Board Scholarship on the piano from New Zealand to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He regularly teaches in Hong Kong, and was external examiner at National Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore from 2009 – 2011. He has given classes at both the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. In 1988 he founded the Blackheath Music Festival in London. From 1993 - 2010 he tutored at the Shrewsbury International Summer School and was Music Director of the Summer School from 2004 - 2010. In 1997 he was elected Warden of the Private Teachers’ Section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and in 2002 was elected President of the Royal Academy of Music Club. He has recently been involved in the selecting and editing of a major new piano duet project that is republishing long out-of-print beginner and intermediate level duet material, primarily for the pupil/teacher. ADJUDICATOR : JO COLE

Cellist Jo Cole studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Florence Hooton and David Strange, then with Ralph Kirshbaum. She was Deputy Head of Strings at the Royal Northern College of Music from 2006 to 2010. She is now Head of Strings at the Royal Academy of Music. Jo was appointed Professor of the University of London in February 2016.

She has had a substantial playing career spanning more than 25 years. A distinguished, seasoned orchestral cellist and experienced chamber musician, Jo has a record of versatility, which includes period performance and innovation in outreach.

Jo’s playing career includes many years’ membership of the Academy of St Martins, Co-Principal of the City of London Sinfonia and as a regular performer with the London Symphony Orchestra. She continues to perform professionally whenever this is possible alongside her substantial commitment to her students at the Academy.

ADJUDICATOR : NICOLA-JANE KEMP

Nicola-Jane Kemp was a pupil at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester and studied at Cambridge University, The Royal College of Music and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD). Her career began with professional choral groups such as The Sixteen, The Cambridge Singers and the BBC Singers. She subsequently forged a career as a solo coloratura soprano (with a signature role of “Queen of the Night”) and has worked for companies as diverse as Music Theatre Wales, the

Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in France and BBC Radio 2 (Friday Night is Music Night). Her concert work takes her all round the UK, including the South Bank, Barbican and St John’s Smith Square in London, and to the Middle East. Most recently she has sung as soloist in Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony No. 2 at Coventry Cathedral, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy at the Cadogan Hall, London and Verdi’s Requiem at St John’s Smith Square, London.

She currently teaches choral scholars at Clare and Queens’ Colleges, Cambridge. She taught for 20 years at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London. She is a Grade/Diploma examiner for the ABRSM, an adjudicator for The British & International Federation of Festivals and a council member of the Association of Teachers of Singing. She has given masterclasses and workshops for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, The Winchester Solo Singers Course and in Autumn 2015, was appointed Vocal Consultant to Suzi Digby’s London Youth Choir.

With Heidi Pegler, their series of songbooks - The Language of Song published by Faber Music - was awarded “Best Education Publication” by the British Music Industries Association in 2007. Nicola-Jane was appointed Head of Singing at Eton College in September 2015.

ADJUDICATOR : ANTHONY BAILEY

As a clarinettist, Anthony is associated with the London Mozart Players, with whom he has performed many times – including on CD recordings and in Concert. He has also performed regularly with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the English Chamber Orchestra. He is a member of the Chinook Clarinet Quartet, with whom he has regularly performed throughout the UK in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, and the Bridgewater Hall. The quartet have recorded two CDs and performed live on BBC Radio and TV.

Anthony is a founder member of the Tippett Ensemble, a professional group of alumni from the Wiltshire Youth Orchestra, formed in 2012. Recently they performed Beethoven Septet and Brahms Clarinet Quintet. Anthony as also been the leader of the British Clarinet Ensemble since 2000 with whom he has recorded several CDs, and toured Europe, America and Japan.

Since 2004 he has been the conductor of the Symphonic Wind Orchestra at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, performing in many concerts with repertoire including his own works and arrangements, including and an arrangement of Shostakovitch Piano Concerto no.2 and the London premiere of Chaises Musicales by Anthony himself. He is the Musical Director of the East Anglian Single Reed Choir, a woodwind coach for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. He recently made his debut conducting the Colne Philharmonic Orchestra and the Suffolk and Essex Concert bands.

He has recently also made his debut with the Essex Concert Band.

Anthony was the director of the Jonas Foundation Music School between 2006-2011, and now runs his own music school in London for the Willow Tree Trust.
