ITS HISTORYThe American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstruc-tive Surgery (AAFPRS) was founded in 1964 andrepresents more than 3,000 facial plastic and reconstruc-tive surgeons throughout the world. The AAFPRS is aNational Medical Specialty Society of the AmericanMedical Association (AMA). The AAFPRS holds anofficial seat in the AMA House of Delegates and on theAmerican College of Surgeons board of governors.

ITS MEMBERSThe majority of AAFPRS members and fellows arecertified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Headand Neck Surgery, which includes examination in facialplastic and reconstructive surgery procedures, and theAmerican Board of Facial Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery. Other AAFPRS members are surgeons certifiedin ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and dermatology.

ITS PURPOSEThe AAFPRS was founded in 1964 as an autonomousprofessional society representing the specialty of facialplastic surgery. The mission of the AAFPRS is:

• To promote the highest quality facial plastic surgerythrough education, dissemination of professionalinformation, and the establishment of professionalstandards;• To achieve understanding and recognition of thespecialty of facial plastic surgery by the medicalprofession, hospitals, and other medical care entities, legislative and regulatory bodies, and the public at large;• To define facial plastic surgery as a specialty thatrequires intensive training and competence, embodieshigh ethical standards, artistic ideals, commitment tohumanitarian service, and a desire to enhance thequality of human life;• To serve as the public’s information sourceon facial plastic surgery; and• To assist members in the practice of facial plasticand reconstructive surgery, guiding them in thedelivery of high quality, cost-effective medicine andsurgery.

With over 3,000 members, the Academy is the world’slargest international association of facial plastic surgeonsand the only organization dedicated solely to theadvancement of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

ABOUT THE AAFPRS FOUNDATION

In 1974, the Educational and Research Foundation for theAmerican Academy of Facial Plastic and ReconstructiveSurgery (AAFPRS Foundation) was created to addressthe medical and scientific issues and challenges whichconfront facial plastic surgeons.

The AAFPRS Foundation established a proactive re-search program and educational resources for leaders infacial plastic surgery. Through courses, workshops, andother scientific presentations, as well as a highly re-spected fellowship training program, the AAFPRSFoundation has consistently provided quality educationalprograms for the dissemination of knowledge andinformation among facial plastic surgeons.

In the early 1990s, FACE TO FACE humanitarianprograms were established so that AAFPRS memberscould use their skills and share their talent in helping theless fortunate individuals here and abroad.

FACE TO FACE: International brings AAFPRS mem-bers to third world countries where they treat childrenwith facial birth defects and anomalies.

FACE TO FACE: The National Domestic ViolenceProject allows AAFPRS members to perform surgerieson survivors of domestic abuse here in the United States, who have received injuries to their faces.

The newest member to FACE TO FACE is Faces ofHonor. This program offers free surgical care for soldierswho have been injured in the line of duty in Iraq and/orAfghanistan.
