HISTORY…

Spector Group was established in 1965 and has grown to be one of the most respected design firms in the nation. Major projects have included corporate headquarters, base building and interiors, hospitality, educational, health care and residential architecture. Our Interiors Services include interior programming, space planning, interior design, facilities management and lighting design.

We are the largest architectural, interior design firm on Long Island and the 7th largest in the New York Region. We are a firm of 71 professionals between our Long Island and Manhattan offices with a broad range of experience and expertise. Our design and management team are made up of architects who have evolved from within the firm as well as recruited from some of the most notable firms and colleges in the nation. We make up a multi-disciplined team of design professionals with a depth and a diversity of experience that allows us to successfully address a wide variety of project types. Regarded in the architectural community as a high profile design firm, the Spector Group has multiple award winning buildings nationally.

At Spector Group, we believe integrated relationships inspire good design; they enrich and energize our work and our lives, and are paramount for success. In designing innovative and productive workspace environments, Spector Group is relentlessly committed to establishing relationships and building partnerships that facilitate success both internally and externally. These partnerships operate within the firm in the form of design, production and project management; they work too with our clientele, who is included in the design process by contributing thoughts and ideas in response to questions by Spector Group members. There are no preconceived notions – Spector Group staff members are excellent listeners finely tuned to allow their architectural design solutions to represent the client’s directives concerning program, image, budget and schedule.

Partnership is an important design concept for the Spector Group. not only does it operate within the firm in the form of design teams, production teams, etc., but it works too with clientele.

The client is not only to be serviced, he or she is included in the design process by contributing thoughts and ideas in response to questions by spector group members. There are no preconceived notions – Spector Group staff members are excellent listeners, finely tuned to allow their architectural and interior designs to represent the client’s directives concerning program, image, budget and schedule.

The staff of the Spector Group works in an environment that enhances creativity and productivity. They understand the importance of how positively experiencing ones’ work space contributes directly to the ability to function optimally. This awareness is particularly important when creating environments for our clients. The Spector Group is totally responsive to the sensitivities of our clients’ environment as it pertains to program, function, flow and adjacencies, while simultaneously remaining innovative, creative, sophisticated and pragmatic.

The concept of “total design” as practiced by the Spector Group, represents an ongoing open-ended relationship between the exterior of a building and its interior spaces. Not only does creativity and productivity occur within, it begins as one perceives the structure and proudly identifies with it. That feeling is then extended to the inner space, a continuation of the external architectural design.

The Spector Group experiences the architecture of site, building and interior spaces as one; they are not perceived as individual disciplines. Consultants retained on this project will be under the firm auspices of the Spector Group. In addition, deep consideration for budget is paramount and schedules strictly adhered to.

The Spector Group’s ability to foster open communication among the firm, clients and consultants is a strong asset for the Spector Group. In creating an atmosphere conducive to relating information freely, the Spector Group always is in touch with realities surrounding a given project. Clear and open communication with our clients is a high priority.

Spector Group works toward becoming more than prospective architect and client. They share a broad knowledge base consisting of the awareness of the integration of form and function. They also both agree that to beget good design and function, motivation of players is key, and the key to motivation is understanding the conditions that enhance performance.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY… spectorgroup

Page 4: About spector group - designing partnerships

In designing an innovative and productive workspace environment, the Spector Interiors Group appoints a project manager - a specialist in interior design - to lead the project team. The project manager is involved in every aspect of the project and, as the client’s key person for interaction, it is the project manager’s responsibility to ensure that quality, budget and adherence to schedule are met for each step of the process. The project manager steers the team through the following progression, making sure each step is carried out thoroughly and accurately to completion.

Programming: All Spector Interiors Group projects begin with the interview process. At this juncture, the programming specialist delves into the inner workings and requirements of the clients organization: what are the space requirements, function, materials used? How can they be improved upon? Size and location of space is determined. It is critical that future needs are assessed so growth or downsizing can take place smoothly and cost effectively at the proper time. This is the time for company personnel to discuss their needs and concerns, priorities and requirements, with the architect who is trained to listen closely. A survey is given to key client personnel and covers issues relevant to each department: projected department growth, number of employees, storage needs, amenities, etc. The interior programmer works closely with the client’s project manager to convert this list to real specifications. What follows is a complete program incorporating the needs of the client by department and workgroup. This is the definitive, instructional package that defines the complete set of standards the project team refers to throughout the life of the project. It is the owner’s map for future planning of the space.

Space planning: Space planning is the first step in transferring the information gathered by the interior programmer into a plan. The project team takes the programming analysis and blocks square footage according to department relationships and available space, both horizontally and vertically. Interdepartmental relationships and adjacencies are studied, multiple options examined, and located accordingly. The space plan provides for the clients’ current size and anticipated future expansion. The space plan is the foundation of the entire project. It is at this point that important items are noted, and notations for design emphasis have begun. Budgetary allotments and project scheduling are confirmed at this juncture, as well.

Design: The Spector Interiors Group believes that each project is a blending of the client and environment, that no theory or design is set in stone. Each project must reflect the identity and philosophy of individual clients. To create an innovative and unique design, the project designer will spend time within the client organization, learning business and personnel philosophy, along with the desired public representation. Taking the programming and space planning, the project designer incorporates the material needs with the client image and budget to create an innovative corporate environment, as explained more in depth in the design philosophy statement preceding this page.

PROJECT APPROACH… spectorgroup

Page 5: About spector group - designing partnerships

Design Development: This stage takes the initial design concept, strengthens it and makes it come to life. The design becomes three-dimensional as lighting, color, materials, details and finishes are added. This process is dependent upon the designer possessing a strong knowledge of all these facets, and knowing how to blend them with the initial design concept resulting in a cohesive design solution, achievable within budget and schedule. This stage marks the beginning of construction documents, allowing the close examination of budget, as dollar expenditures become more focused.

Within each phase of this process, there is an overlap of disciplines as one group reaches completion and the next is drawn in and moves forward. The project manager ensures the transitions are smooth as each group is properly brought up to speed.

Systems/Materials/Furniture: The Spector Interiors group in-house design library is one of the best in the industry. It is constantly updated allowing the project team to have the latest technology, current pricing, and product availability information close by at any given time. The library is staffed with professionals continually searching for new products in a variety of price ranges, models and finishes. The office staff participates in product seminars affording them first hand knowledge of multiple products including systems furniture, lighting, carpeting, stone, fabrics, finishes, etc. This enables the project team to quickly and properly gather materials appropriate to client budget, need and representation. Along with the project manager, a product specialist ensures appropriate budgetary requirements are fulfilled, and checks the selection and availability of a product. Whereas some firms may find it necessary to call in outside consultants for these services, these Spector Group specialists are available all under one roof.

The Study of Ergonomics, or the design of furniture engineered to enforce the human structure, is key in today’s market. Our sensitivity to manmade products that enhance the ability to work is paramount in workplaces around the world.

Construction Documents: This is a critical phase, as the quality of these drawings must indicate in detail all aspects of this process. All project documents are assembled together to become complete instructions. All items are accurately coordinated with regard to space, design, materials, budget, specifications and scheduling. The functions of all consultants and engineers are united here to create a document that guarantees the project will work as a cohesive whole. This becomes the tool for bidding the job, as well as an instrument for client and architect to ensure the accuracy of the construction of the project. Again, budget and schedule are continually checked with design andprogramming to ensure the appropriate outcome.

Furniture Procurement: Our in-house professional can coordinate all aspects of furniture, systems and amenities. Within the context of a demanding marketplace, our ability to procure furniture in a timely, cost effective manner is valued by our clientele. Our art consultants work with the client to present an appropriate selection of artwork to complement the interior design and architecture. These specialists are present on site to ensure the appropriate coordination and placement of art, fabrics and furniture systems.

Construction Administration: During the process of construction, we can be present as much or as little as the client elects. We will ensure that construction documents are being enforced, and work in progress is up to industry and document standards. We can act as contract administrator to ensure quality, adherence to schedule, budget and design - the essence of the contract documents. We will check materials, review samples, be present at field meetings, oversee punchlists and act on behalf of our client, to the extent determined by the client. This interaction may fall within a broad range as desired by the client.

At Spector Group, highly trained professionals, overseen by the project manager control all aspects of interior design. Our clients know that constant monitoring of budget and schedules is standard practice. The assemblance of these individuals within one firm assures complete and thorough coordination with the client, forming a united team with the mutual goal of project excellence from beginning to end.
