Glossary of exterior sign types
Cabinet sign (wall sign) - structure consisting of the frame
and polycarbonate face not including internal components
- usually mounted to the fascia.
Changeable copy (readerboard) - variable message
composed of individual letters mounted on a track system.
Channel letter - Fabricated three-dimensional letter that
accommodates a light source - mounted on exposed
raceway or remote raceway. Open channel - a letter that has no face where the light source is visible
Pan channel - letter that is constructed with side walls, back, and face
Reverse channel letter - letter has an opaque face and side walls
where light shines from behind to form a halo effect

Glossary of exterior sign types Dimensional letter - Cut out, cast, molded or fabricated in
material such as metal or plastic to create a raised condition.
Not internally illuminated.
Directional - Designed to provide direction to pedestrian and
vehicular traffic
Double-faced - Two parallel opposing (back-to-back) faces
Electronic message center - Variable message sign that
utilizes computer-generated messages. Uses LEDs, LCDs or
incandescent lamps.

Glossary of exterior sign types Exterior illuminated - illuminated by a light source that is directed
towards and shines on the face.
Projecting - building mounted with the faces perpendicular to the
building fascia
Push-through - A letter or logo cut out of a backing material that is as
thick or thicker than the sign face material and mounted on the inside of
the sign face so that the backing material’s thickness extends flush with
or through and beyond the front plane of the sign face.
Window sign - displayed in a window - usually neon
