About Respirators

Types of Respirators Respirators fall under two classifications: air-purifying and air-supplied.

Air-purifying respirators are used against particulates, gases, and vapors.These are categorized as negative-pressure respirators that use chemicalcartridges and/or filters; gas masks; and positive-pressure units such aspowered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). Air-supplied devices rely on aprimary air source to deliver a steady flow of respirable air to the user’sfacepiece. These consist of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and air-line devices.

MSA Air-Purifying Respirators (APRs) range from low-maintenance halfmask facepieces with cartridges and/or filters to the more complex PAPRs with full- facepieces, or hoods.

• APRs for particulates use filters to capture dusts,mists, and fumes. Filters do not protect against gases or vapors, and generally become less effective as particles accumulate on the filter and plug spacesbetween the fibers. Filtering APRs require filter replacement when the user finds it difficult to breathe through them.

• Gas and vapor APRs employ chemical cartridges or canisters to removehazardous gases or vapors from the air. They do not protect againstairborne particles. Made to protect against specific gases or vapors, theyprovide protection only as long as the cartridge’s absorbing capacity is not depleted.

The service life of a chemical cartridge depends upon many factors and can be estimated in various ways. Cartridges and canisters require an end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI) or a change schedule, based onobjective information or data that will ensure that canisters and cartridgesare changed before the end of their useful life. cartridges, are worn in atmospheres that contain hazards of both particulates and gases.

Supplied-Air Respirators (SARs), comprise air-line respirators,SCBA, and combination (supplied-air) respirators.

• Air-Line Respirators are used for extended periods in non-IDLHatmospheres. They use an air-line hose to deliver clean breathing air froma stationary source of compressed air for prolonged periods of time.Although comparatively lightweight, air-line respirators can limit users’mobility because of the air-line hose that must be attached.

• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) have an open-circuit designthat provides air rated for 30 to 60 minutes. They consist of a wearable,clean-air supply and a tight-fitting facepiece, and are used for shortduration entrance or escape from atmospheres that are or may be IDLH.They offer relatively unrestricted movement.

• Combination SARs are air-line devices used for extended work periods in atmospheres that are or may be IDLH. They have an auxiliary self-contained air cylinder that can be used if the primary air supply fails.The air cylinder can also be used for entry into or escape from IDLHatmospheres, such as confined spaces.

Respirator SelectionAll respirators in use must be NIOSH-approved (NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84).Selecting respirators entails knowing what level of respiratory protectionemployees need, as well as which size respirator is right for any face andfacial contours.

Respiratory protective devices vary in design, application, and protectivecapability. Thus, the user must assess the inhalation hazard and understand the specific use limitations of available equipment to assureproper selection.

If your calculation shows that exposure concentrations exceedrecommended limits and engineering/administrative controls do not reduce exposure below the permissible limit, tailor your respiratoryprotection program to your specific conditions based on:

• Toxicity (TLV or TWA) • Maximum Expected

Concentration • Oxygen level • IDLH concentration • Warning properties

(adequate or not)

• Sorbent limitations • Facepiece fit • Mobility requirements • Type of use (routine, escape,

or emergency entry) • OSHA-assigned protection

Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs)

OptimAir® Mask-Mounted PAPR with Type HE OptiFilter® XL FilterThe OptimAir Mask-Mounted Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is designed for abatement,nuclear, lead and other hazardous particulate environments. The PAPR filters particulates fromambient air and provides a constant flow of respirable air to the Advantage 3100, 4100, Ultravue orUltra Elite Facepiece. The mask-mounted motor/blower with HEPA filter has a low profile designthat enhances user maneuverability and simplifies decontamination.

The PAPR includes a small, lightweight, water-resistant nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery packthat will operate for eight hours of continuous use. Weighing only 12.5 oz., it measures only 3"x 5"x1". The low-profile unit fits close to the wearer’s body. The sealed battery pack is water-resistant foreasy shower decontamination. Another advantage: NiMH batteries do not have the “memory effect”associated with NiCad batteries. The standard Dual-Rate Battery Charger will recharge a fullydischarged battery in less than three hours. Metal connectors on cable ends provide a durable andsecure fit to the battery and blower housing. NIOSH approved as mask-mounted PAPR and alsoapproved as a negative-pressure APR for egress.

NOTE: the Mask-Mounted PAPR replaces the MM2K PAPR.

OptimAir® TL PAPRThe OptimAir TL PAPR is NIOSH-certified with loose-fitting hoods and a variety of full facepiecesto protect against particulates, toxic gases andvapors, or a combination. “Smart” features set flowrates automatically through built-in sensors. Unitoffers audible and visual alarms for added workersafety. Audible alarms travel up the breathing tubeclose to the user’s ear.

MSA's OptimAir TL PAPR incorporates a sleek, low-profile design for user comfort never beforeoffered in a PAPR. All components including themotor blower, cartridges and battery are packagedin a single hip-hugging housing. Improved motorblower electronics allow for optimum air flow andfilter resistance while the compact and ergonomicbattery pack affords lightweight comfort and fit.Flow control sensors are activated by insertion ofthe cartridges and breathing hose to the blowerhousing. The integral adapter is attached by removing the facepiecelens and replacing it with the adapter. A large vision area—4-1/2" x 5-1/4"—provides an unobstructed view of work. The Welder’s Adapter is supplied with an impact-resistant cover lens; the desired filter plate is ordered separately. Rayfoe™Filter Plates are available in four standard shades—6, 10, 12, 14.

The AutoChange Electronic Welding Lens is for use with MSA Welders Adapters. The solar-powered AutoChange WeldingLens is an automatic-darkening welding filter. The welding lens is in the light state (semi-transparent) before welding anddarkens within 0.4 milliseconds after an arc is struck.

The heat-resistant Welder’s Hood is designed to protect the welder’s head, neck, and shoulders from welding splatter andsparks. The Kevlar hood has a rubber seal which fits snugly over the Welder’s Adapter. The hood also helps protect cartridgeswhen an air-purifying respirator is used in welding operations.

Chin-Type Gas Masks

The Chin-Type Gas Mask is a protective systemconsisting of a full facepiece and canister. The small, round plastic canister attaches directly to the facepiece. The system is designed to permitdownward head movement.

The Chin-Type Gas Mask is designed for respiratoryprotection against a specific gas or group of gases asindicated by canister identification. See the canistertable for specific canister approvals. From a practicalstandpoint, gas masks are generally suitable forventilated areas with relatively stable contaminantconcentration levels. They should never be used inconfined spaces or where oxygen deficiency and highgaseous concentrations may occur. Gas masks mayalso be used for escape only from atmospheres inwhich the contaminant concentration does notexceed the maximum use condition of the gas mask.

FacepiecesWhether you choose the Advantage 4000, Advantage3100, Ultravue or Ultra Elite facepiece, all four areavailable in three sizes to accommodate a wide rangeof users. The Advantage 3100 facepiece has a siliconerubber facepiece, while the Advantage 4000, Ultravueand Ultra Elite facepieces are available in a choice ofsilicone or Hycar rubber. All have a scratch-resistantpolycarbonate lens that provides a wide field ofvision. Optional lens cover accessories provide evengreater scratch resistance. All three facepieces featurea nosecup that helps reduce lens fogging in lowtemperature conditions or in high-humidity conditions.

Belt-Mounted VersionThe belt-mounted version of the Chin-Type Gas Maskallows the wearer to mount the chin-style canister ona support belt. This shifts the weight of the canister tothe hip, providing greater comfort for some wearers.The belt-mounted version is also recommended forwelding or grinding operations, as the canister can bepositioned away from sparks or molten metal.
