The exam is given orally in front of a three-member review board. It lasts about two hours, is very detailed and is graded as pass or fail. The exam includes questions that test candidates' theoretical and practical knowledge of coating and coating inspection. Candidates are also questioned on a random selection of topics that include ethics, standards and procedures. It also incorporates role playing, use of coatings, instrument inspections and case-specific questions. Tips During questioning, avoid making statements that suggest you are unable to complete a task. Answer questions confidently; stay away from "I am not sure." Preparation standards will be asked during the exam. Inspectors should be able to define basic standards. Concentrate on reviewing the surface preparation standards definitions. Don't begin an answer with "I am not familiar," "I need to research that procedure" or "I don't remember covering that in class." Peer review exam questions are taken from course material. The peer review board needs to feel like you have knowledge of all course-related topics. Don't spend time studying procedures you are familiar with. Concentrate on areas of little to no experience. Focus on the course topics not utilized in your current position. Draw from common sense and field experience when the peer review board asks direct questions on specific problem solving. The questions you are given are not to trick you but to see if you can implement your practical experience together with your theoretical knowledge. Don't work yourself up. The peer review panel genuailly want you to be successful and they will help a tiny bit. When they ask you what the time is don't tell them how a watch is made, just tell them the time. They've heard it 1000 times before and they know their shit so don't try and baffle them. Read and read and when you've had enough read again. Hope this helps.11 months ago• Like

Take your time and if you cannot answer straight from the head make notes and if you think you are ready say to the peer that you are ready to answer. The second part is most difficult for most of us as this is the time where you need to answer as broad as possible. Simply yes or no is not possible. The field cases the will ask you must be in your experience. If not tell them honostly that your experinece in that particulair field is less but that you will try to answer in the best possible way and with common sense.

I had this with concrete and i said the same. My peer review was finished after 30 minutes and they were very satisfied.

Just stay calm, take your time ( not more than 10 minutes per question) anbd make notes. You are allowed too.,

Go for it. I did the same.

If if you feel that a particular answer did not go the right way, all is not lost, you have other questions to answer. You have to depend your experience and exposures to different coating experiences in the past. As Jan Wink has said, a common sensical approach is most suited for questions that you are

not so sure about. The examiners are quite friendly and their approach will encourage you to be at ease and think clearly. In some cases there may not be one single correct answer so dont panic and you will get through. Bernard D'Silva NACE III Certified Coating Inspector # 1928011 months ago• Like

The key is to maintain your composure all the time. When a question is asked by the panel, do not always rely on your memory of what you have read but rather draw on your practical experience regarding the subject. As others have told you, the panel's intention is never to trick you or fail you. You have to listen carefully and if you dont understand the question, you can ask for a repeat. Good luck to you !5 months ago• Like

With all respect but stating that if you have read the course material the peer review is not difficult

is wrong.

Level 1 and 2 are the courses where you get prepared and go through the material etc.

In the peer review you will get asked questions where you have to prove your theoretical know how but also in the second hour you will get practical cases where you will be asked to spread out your technical view and answer on issues like possible breakdown of coating in a tank or a procedure when you are getting invited to execute a holiday test in a tank whilst half of the staging is removed etc.

You will not find this in a book. We talk here about field experience.

This is one of the reasons that most Asians etc. stop at level 2. Most of them do not have the vast experience to go for their peer review.

Peer Review, otherwise known as NACE CIP Level 3, is a face-to-face interview with three pretty knowledgeable people, most often from the USA. There are probably around 30 people who regularly serve as Peers in the CIP program, all of whom have qualified as NACE Certified (Level 3) Coating inspectors, and most of whom have been through the full program as students. They have also taken Peer Review, so they have experience of the situation from both sides.

Peer Review can be intimidating. It’s similar to a job interview, and important to everyone that takes it. It is easy for me to say ‘try not to be nervous’, but not many people have managed that, including me and most of the Peers! If you recognize that you may be nervous, then your task is to deal with that and get on with the job. You must be able to function on the day, when you are faced with explaining yourself to 3 ‘strangers’. Preparation is the key. Be knowledgeable about the subject areas, and about the interview situation, and be prepared to demonstrate that you know your stuff.

There are guidelines for taking Peer Review in issues of the inspector magazine, InspectThis, on the NACE web site. These may give a little flavor of the event from the Peer’s point of view. It’s not much focused, however, on the actual study process.

I would recommend the following course of action:

1. Make a list of potential subject areas. Remember that all of the technical information in the two manuals (Level I and Level II) is a potential subject for asking technical questions (in the first half of the exam). Many of the questions you may be asked are based on standard industry equipment and materials, such as spray application equipment, or water-jetting methods, or epoxy coatings. If these are not all familiar to you (because you work in a specific environment, such as the R.N. Dockyard, or offshore) you should try to get at least enough knowledge to try and explain the subject.

2. When you have a list, imagine being asked to explain the subject. Within the 10 minutes period, the most talking you can do will amount to about 7 minutes – but that feels like a long time, sometimes. Can you describe the basic material or process? Can you describe how to use a piece of basic inspection equipment? Try working together with someone else, if you can. You should get a longer list, and will be able to cover a wider range of subject matters, and get feedback on your answers. Set aside a little time each day to work on this together, if you can. Practice talking about these things (answering questions) BEFORE getting to the Peer Review

3. For the second half of the exam, it’s more difficult to imagine what the questions might be, because they are more like the case studies in the course. You already have some experience of talking through these situations, and coming up with a sensible answer, probably in the form of a list. During NACE CIP, you probably worked on this as part of a team. Can each one of you do that on your own? Again, I would recommend that you have a little practice at that, first dreaming up some potential questions, then taking turns to prepare an answer.

4. When preparing for the Peer Review exam, and most importantly while you are in the exam, remember two things. Firstly, you are a coating inspector! Whatever your normal job experience, you’ll have to imagine yourself as the independent NACE inspector that we talked about in the classroom. You may not have the same authority as in your daily work. At the same time, you may be required to suggest solutions to problems as though you had all the authority in the world. Secondly, remember that NACE inspectors may work in many situations, different countries, different structures, etc. It’s good to mention and draw on your own field experience, but you should think about the ‘other’ situations that might apply. For example, if your work is mainly on ships, think about how it might be on an elevated water tower. If you mainly work on small components, think about how it would be on huge structures (or vice-versa). If you work mainly with sophisticated, plural component coatings, think about the uses and application of single pack maintenance coatings and unskilled labour, etc. etc.

5. Don’t underestimate the power of the interview situation. You will probably kick yourselves afterwards for all the things you know about and forgot to say. It happens to all of us. Your task is to try to remember enough to adequately explain your knowledge of the subject areas (first half) and practical experience (second half)

6. When you are asked a question, do two things; first listen carefully to the question, or read the question again, and secondly take a short while (1 or 2 minutes) to make a list of what you want to say. The Peers often say ‘If we ask you what time it is, don’t tell us how to build a watch’. Answer the question that they ask.

7. Some of the specific questions that you might be asked are short questions that require only short answers. Don’t be phased if this happens to you – you just got lucky!

8. Finally, if all this sounds a little intimidating, remember that 4000 people before you have been through the Peer Review, and most of them are now NACE Certified Coating Inspectors. Would you be a good addition to the roster? Of course you would.

To kick off your list of potential questions, how about these:

• Describe conventional airspray equipment

• Describe Airless spray equipment

• Describe standards that might be applied to surface preparation by water jetting …….. by abrasive blast cleaning ……. by hand or power tools

• Describe basic inspection equipment that might be used to measure dry film thickness ……. find holidays …. test adhesion
