ABOUT MERIDIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL

Vision Joyful Learners, Creative Thinkers, Compassionate Leaders

Mission To nurture in Meridians inquiring minds and caring hearts for their pursuit of excellence

Motto Unite to Reach New Heights

Values Humility, Compassion, Integrity and Resilience

Crest The school crest is formed by the letter M for Meridian Secondary School and is designed with two adjoining peaks to represent the unity of Coral Secondary School and Siglap Secondary School. The peaks stand tall and exude strength in solid foundations. The silver, blue and green colours symbolise Innovation, Leadership and The Arts. The silver peaks symbolise an innovative environment to cultivate creative thinkers. Supporting the silver peaks are two pillars in blue and green which represent the heritage of both schools. The first pillar in blue symbolises Leadership, and the other in green symbolises The Arts. Together, they represent the strength and unity of Meridians to reach new heights.

School Song Verse One: Joyful learners, seeking knowledge, Reaching for the highest star. Gifted minds, adding value, Building our community. Chorus: Let’s unite and keep it true. Let Meridian guide us through. We will strive with all our hearts To make Meridian great. Verse Two: Caring people, daring leaders, Leading in the thoughtful path. Sharing arts, touching hearts, Enrich our humanity

Chorus: Let’s unite and keep it true. Let Meridian guide us through. We will strive with all our hearts To make Meridian great.

He not only is able to follow instructions well, he is also able to lead the sec 2 Student Leaders in carrying out their duties. Jerry Wong Jen Ren — Sec 3E1 Jerry is a highly responsible student who focuses well in his learning and has a strong sense of purpose. He takes pride in his work in giving quality work and always submits his work promptly. Thus, he is an exemplary role model to his classmates. Jerry displays warmth and sincerity to his classmates and teachers. Always cheerful, optimistic and approachable, Jerry is often observed to be helping his classmates in clarifying doubts they have about lessons taught for the various subjects. In class, Jerry is attentive and respectful to his teachers. He takes the lead in communicating his classmates’ difficulties in learning to his teachers and contributes to a conducive learning environment for his class. His positive attitude in learning has influenced his classmates to also develop a growth mindset like him, in learning. Jerry has a mature outlook beyond his age and displays care and concern for his classmates by giving them brotherly advice to change the negative mindset that his classmates have about some school issues. For instance, at the start of the year, while a few classmates were fervently arguing with the Form Teachers about the required grooming – namely the type of unacceptable hair-style and banning of tapered pants – Jerry calmly commented and convinced his classmates on the inappropriateness of the unacceptable hairstyles and discomfort caused by tapered pants. He is able to reason out things and speak his mind about a rational decision and is not afraid of being unpopular. For this, he earns the respect of his classmates. He shows compassion by participating enthusiastically in the class VIA, volunteering to put up publicity posters around the school and remembering to remove them at the end of the VIA campaign. He is a responsible, reliable and dependable helper. Always amiable, he is kind to those who need help. For instance, when a classmate recently fell ill and threw up in class, he was the first to attend to his sick classmate, oblivious to the mess created by the vomit around him. Jerry patiently helped his classmate to clean up and followed up by looking after his well-being for the rest of the day. Jerry comes from a humble family background and knows the importance of securing a good education. He remains resilient, notwithstanding the financial hardship of his family. When help was offered to him to cover the cost of the Overseas Learning Journey that his family could ill afford (being a foreign student, he is not eligible for any financial assistance), he graciously declined and explained a plan he has thought out on how he could save to pay for the trip. He remains focused in his academic goals and is undaunted by challenges in his studies. He is gracious, appreciative of the learning opportunities given to him and is a promising young gentleman. Jerry is strongly supported for the Lee Zheng Rong Caring Award.

11) SYNOPSES OF PERFORMANCES

1) Modern Dance - Beyond The Universe

The title of our dance piece is "Beyond the Universe". In this piece, we would like to encourage everyone to embrace their individuality, an extraterrestrial version of themselves. Some incidents in life may have caused us to be more cautious in showing our true selves. Through this dance, we will show how beautiful life can be when we allow our extraterrestrial selves to shine.

2) Choir - Cease Sorrows Now and Dana Dana

Cease Sorrows Now Composer: Thomas Weelkes Voicing: SAB Thomas Weelkes was an English Renaissance organist and composer. His compositions are mainly for the vocal arts; madrigals, anthems and services. His works are distinguished from other composers of his time, through the use of chromatics, varied organic counterpoints and unconventional rhythm in their construction. The lyrics of Cease Sorrows Now are the last words of dying individual who has met misfortune. The first section of the Cease Sorrows Now starts off polyphonic with the use of one voice section against a duet. Weelkes employs the use of homophonic singing to emphasize important statements like, "no hope is left" and "cut off pleasure quite". He also uses the Picardy third to give a sense of fluctuating tonalities, perhaps suggesting a state between life and death. The high contrast of the 6/8 rhythms infers to the deed that caused the misfortune. The song eventually gives way to a full 3 part polyphonic structure and continues to deconstruct structurally with ascending chromatic line and shorter phrases towards the end. This effect is parallel to the concept of a slow death and ascension to the heavens as the song ends on a major chord formed through a Picardy third. Dana Dana Composer: Bárdos Lajos Voicing: SAB Bárdos Lajos (1899-1986) was a Hungarian composer, music teacher and choir director. He is one of the most influential figures in twentieth century Hungarian music.

Dana Dana is a Hungarian folk dance song collected by Kiss Lajos in 1939 in Gombos. Published in 1940, Bárdos Lajos set the text to a fast pace with voice parts being interactive with one another and sections of the song being contrasting to one another in structure, similar to the choreography of a dance. Each voice part is given the lead role at various points of the song. Bárdos shapes the accompanying voices into different textures and flavours at each section. The text of the song consist of typical banter one would find at social gatherings, such as "Don't be smart, don't delay, marry, don't be picky...". As the choir will be performing these songs for their upcoming SYF, we would like to remind everyone that no photography or videography is allowed. Thank you.

3) Teachers’ Performance - Make You Feel My Love

In Meridian, we have a vibrant arts culture not only amongst students but also our teachers. Our passionate teachers, art and non-art teachers, are actively involved in school performances. Today, five of our teachers will be bringing to us a multimedia showcase. Our musicians, Ms Phyllis Loe on the bass; Mr Joel Boon on violin; Mr Adam Chan on piano; as well as Ms Jasmin Tan and Mr David Vaithilingam singing a duet; will serenade us with Bob Dylan ’s “Make You Feel My Love”. This will be accompanied by Mr Joe, who will complete a drawing us-ing his iPad by the end of the song.

4) Meridian Nusantara Orchestra (MNO) - Bohemian Rhapsody

Our school’s MNO has a rich history and has been featured in many out-of-school performances and on television programmes. They will be performing “Bohemian Rhapsody” by the Queen. Contrary to the galvanic and groovy style heard in most of Queen’s music, our MNO’s arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody” showcases the rich harmonies as well as moving melody that the angklung and kulintang is able to achieve. As the MNO will be performing this song for their upcoming SYF, we would like to remind everyone that no photography or videography is allowed. Thank you.
