Between January and April 2004, the researchers tracked at least three cases of

polar bears that fed copies of their own species in Alaska and the westernmost of Canada, including the first known case of

death, hands of another polar bear, a female who was in his den.

According to the study, in recent years polar bears have begun to kill each other, especially the males to mark their territory and control the growth of the population of an area.

Unit 8 (bears heros)Unit 8 (bears heros)In 2005, the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group (PBSG) reviewed the status of polar bears using the IUCN Red List categories and criteria.

The group concluded that the Red List classification of the polar bear should be upgraded from Least Concern to Vulnerable based on the likelihood of a decline in the total global polar bear population of more than 30% within the next 35 to 50 years.

The US Government has classified the Polar Bear under its

Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Why is this species important?

Of all of the wildlife species in the Arctic, the polar bear is perhaps the most fitting icon for this ecoregion. Its amazing adaptations to life in the harsh Arctic environment and dependence on sea ice make them so impressive, and yet so vulnerable.

Large carnivores are sensitive indicators of ecosystem health. Polar bears are studied to gain an understanding of what is happening throughout the Arctic as a polar bear at risk is often a sign of something wrong somewhere in the arctic marine ecosystem.

Warming affects polar bears more than any other species because they live on the ice is disappearing, a habitat which have been adapted specifically. Environmental toxins also affect them. Polar bears are at the top of the food chain, so that "they integrate all the changes that take place" in the species below them, says Steven C.Amstrup, head of the project on polar bears in the Alaska Science Center Service U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Anchorage

“Earth” is a hymn to the beauty of our planet and a reminder of the delicate fragility of the place where we live. Using the sun as a guide, we set off an emotional journey with a stopover in the Arctic, where a polar bear family wakes up under the first light of spring in search of food before the thaw.

Además siempre esta happy fase i love this nivel..
