    ABOUT ITA

The Italian Trade Agency is the Government agency that supports the globalisation of Italian firms, under the Ministry of Economic Development’s strategies. ITA helps to develop, facilitate and promote Italian economic and trade relations with foreign countries, focusing on the needs of SME, their associations and partnerships. ITA sustains Italian firms in their internationalisation processes and promotes the marketing of Italian goods and services, Italian investments, as well as the image of “Made in Italy” products worldwide.

ITA provides information, support and consultancy to Italian companies on foreign markets, promoting and fostering export and cooperation in all areas - industry, agricultural and agri-food, services, etc. - with the target of increasing their presence and making it more effective on international markets. ITA works closely with the Italian Regions, the network of the Italian Chambers of Commerce, business organisations and other public and private entities. ITA headquarters are in Rome, with a large network of offices around the world and acts as “Trade Promotion Sections” of the Italian Embassies or Consulates.

ITA is now involved in “Piano Sud”, an initiative designed to enable the enterprises and research systems of Italy’s so-called Convergence Regions - Campania, Calabria, Apulia and Sicily – to express their full potential for innovation and excellence. For this reason we have the pleasure to present wine producing companies from Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicilia.

    SOUTHERN EXPORT PLAN 2 (PES2)

The Export Plan for Southern Italy N.2, also known as the Southern Export Plan 2 (PES2), is a multi-year programme of initiatives aimed at boosting and enhancing the internationalization of SMEs and the icon of Italian products around the world.

It is aimed at products and services provided by enterprises located in less developed regions (Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Apulia and Sicily) and transition regions (Abruzzo, Molise and Sardinia). The Plan is developed by Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) to comply with the European Commission’s National Operational Plan on Enterprises and Competitiveness 2014-2020 (European Regional Development Fund – ERDF).

Operational management is undertaken by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in partnership with regional institutions and local industrial organizations. The programme revolves around two main types of initiatives: training and coaching within Italy, and promotional activities abroad. In particular, it focuses on micro, small and medium enterprises, startups, consortia, business networks and universities located in this specific geographical area.

Many activities are carried out in international markets, such as the countries of the European Union, North America and Asia, in order to facilitate forms of commercial, industrial and technological collaboration between Italian companies and foreign counterparts.

ABRUZZOAbruzzo’s average annual wine production of 300 million litres (5th in volume among the regions) includes 35% DOC/DOCG and 8% IGT. Red wine accounts for 60% of Abruzzo’s production.

In a nation of myriad appellations, Abruzzo offers wine drinkers refreshing clarity in the regionwide DOCs for Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, which account for an abundance of good red and white wines along with a pit of Cerasuolo, a hearty rosé.

The region, whose surface is two-thirds mountains and one-third hills, boasts highly favourable conditions for vines. Growers generally favour the predominant Montepulciano and Trebbiano, though in recent times they’ve planted other varieties, some covered by the DOCs of Controguerra and Terre Tollesi, as well as the nine IGT appellations. The native Montepulciano (not to be confused with the town of that name in Tuscany where Vino Nobile is made) is a vine of convincing character that has been winning admirers abroad. Among Italy’s DOC-DOCG appellations, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, with about 90 million bottles distinguished under the DOCG of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teremane.

The rest of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is DOC, applying to both the red wine and the cherry hued rosé of Cerasuolo. Two other subzones are noted: Casauria or Terre di Casauria and Terre dei Vestini. Much Trebbiano is based on the prolific Tuscan variety, which makes light, crisp whites of subtle aroma and flavour. Some growers work with the “true” Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. A choice few have managed to make Trebbiano of remarkable depth and texture, with a propensity to develop complexity over four or five years, sometimes more, of aging. Those wines are relatively rare.

The recently revived varieties of Passerina and Pecorino are making white wines of character in Abruzzo. IGT: Alto Tirino, Colli Aprutini, Colli del Sangro, Colline Frentane, Colline Pescaresi, Colline Teatine, Del Vastese or Histonium, Terre Aquilane or Terre de L’Aquila, Terre di Chieti, Valle Peligna. DOCG: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane. DOC: Controguerra, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (Casauria or Terre di Casauria, Colline Teramane, Terre dei Vestini), Terre Tollesi or Tullum, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

Recognizability and territory are the main characteristics of Cantina Rapino’s wines. The winery was founded at the beginning of the 70’s and based all the production on its own vineyards, about 4 hectares, located in the territory of Francavilla al Mare, near the sea, from which it takes all the benefits. Current production is around 20,000 bottles, with ever-expanding potential. Starting from the 2018 harvest, production is converted to organic farming.

Torre Zambra winery is located on the rolling hills of Abruzzo in the medieval village of Villamagna, one of the most suitable locations in the world for the cultivation of vines. The extreme proximity of sea and mountains means that there are sudden changes in temperature between day and night and in the alternation of the different seasons. The vineyards of the Torre Zambra winery are located at about 200 meters above sea level with exposure to the south-east. This location of the vineyards makes it possible to obtain refined productions of both white and red grapes. Forty-year-old vineyards are flanked by younger plants, guaranteeing the right balance between freshness and complexity.

BASILICATABasilicata’s average annual wine production of 23 million litres (18th in volume among the regions) includes about 13% DOC and the rest IGT. Red wine accounts for about 80% of Basilicata’s production.

Basilicata also known as Lucania, is a region of arid hills and desolate mountains that can be cold for a southerly place. But the upland climate has its advantages for viticulture, in wines that show enviable aromas and flavours.

Basilicata has four DOC’s: the classic red Aglianico del Vulture and the appellations of Grottino di Roccanova, Terra dell’Alta Val d’Agri and Matera. Aglianico, one of southern Italy’s fines red wines, is rapidly gaining admirers elsewhere. Aglianico del Vulture Superiore has been nominated for DOCG status. The Aglianico vine-also the base of Campania’s Taurasi - was brought to Basilicata by the Greeks, perhaps as long ago as the 6th or 7th century BC. (Its name is a corruption of Hellenico). On the slopes of the extinct volcano of Monte Vulture it makes a robust, deeply coloured wine that can improve for many years from fine vintages, becoming increasingly refined and complex in flavour. There are also youthful versions of the wine, sometimes semisweet and even sparkling.

Grottino di Roccanova DOC has a white of Malvasia and Rosso and Rosato based on Sangiovese with other varieties. Terra dell’Alta Val d’Agri red and rosé are based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Matera uses a range of varieties in its six types of wine, including the red Sangiovese, Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon and the white Greco Bianco and Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata. IGT: Basilicata. DOC: Aglianico del Vulture, Grottino di Roccanova, Matera, Terre dell’Alta Val d’Agri.

CALABRIACalabria’s average annual production of 47 million litres (16th in volume among the regions) includes 19% DOC and 13% IGT. Red wine accounts for 89% of Calabria’s production.

Calabria, which forms the toe of the Italian boot, is a predominantly mountainous region with marked variations in microclimates between the sunny coastal hills along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas and the chilly heights of Aspromonte massifs. Two grape varieties of Greek origin dominate – Gaglioppo in red wines and Greco in whites.

Calabria’s best known wine is Ciro’, which grows on low hills along the Ionian coast between the ancient Greek cities of Sybaris and Kroton (Sibari and Crotone today). Local legend has it that Ciro’ descended directly from Krimia, the wine Calabrian athletes drank to celebrate victory in an early Olympiad. Lately Ciro’ has taken on contemporary touches as new methods of vine-training and temperature-controlled winemaking have diminished the alcoholic strength, making the wine rounder, fuller in fruit and fresher in bouquet. The classic Ciro’ is red, which in the Riserva version has the capacity to age beyond a decade from certain vintages. There is also a rosato and a bianco from Greco grapes.

Melissa, an adjacent DOC zone, makes red and white wines similar to Ciro’, but red wines from the same Gaglioppo grown at higher altitudes such as Pollino, Donnici and Savuto are lighter in body and colour. The dark Greco Nero variety is also used in certain reds of Calabria.

Among the whites, the rare Greco di Bianco stands out as an exquisite but increasingly rare sweet wine; from a local variety of Greco, it has a rich, velvety texture with a citrus-like bouquet. The nearly identical Greco di Gerace is a non-DOC wine that carries the ancient place name. From the same area comes Mantonico di Bianco, a Sherry-like amber wine with hints of almond and citrus in bouquet and flavour.

The vinery was founded in 2015 when Agostino Cerchiara decided to follow his passion for agriculture and, specifically, for wine-growing. His sister, Vincenza, abandoned her career as tax consultant deciding to join Agostino in this experience. The first red wine label was born from the 2016 harvest: CERVINAGO (a combination of their names), produced from LACRIMA grapes, an ancient vine (16th century) belonging to the Magliocco family, which was abandoned for years but now revaluated. To date, the production is limited to a few thousand bottles allowing them to personally follow all the production phases. The farming is organic and the harvest is carried out manually, ensuring a careful selection of grapes. The vinification process begins immediately to ensure that precious organoleptic properties of grapes are preserved; during fermentation phase cultured yeasts are not used and delestage (a French technique used to delicately extract color and perfumes) is performed. In 2018 they started the production of a white wine from Greco Bianco grapes with about one thousand bottles.

Situated on “Destra Crati” hills, the estate Chimento a property of 15 hectares is part of a precious and extraordinary context always devoted to growing grapes. In addition to the typical Calabrian native grapes, Magliocco Dolce and Greco Bianco, the production does not give up the positive contributions of noble international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon. The vineyard quality is due to the care for the essential treatments, constancy and methodical work respecting the traditions, so as to obtain a natural product, reflecting the scents and the land characteristics. The mild climate, fertile soil, type of clay from the characteristic color “reddish” help man’s care. In 2002 the architect Vincenzo Chimento supervised the renovation of the splendid house from 1800’s and today the charming and picturesque farm is home to a cozy tasting point, ideal place to enjoy tasting the main company product: the wine.

The D.O.C. Terre di Cosenza began its production recently, in 2012, but not for this reason one must think that its wines are without tradition, since this DOC inherits the history of wine-making areas of ancient tradition. The province of Cosenza was previously affected by 7 small, DOC’s, whose land had an extremely limited extent, small productions that, given the small number of bottles produced, could not get the necessary and deserved visibility on an increasingly globalised market.

From the slopes of a historical hill, once a defensive fortress, now site of the ancient Swabian Castle of Cosenza, it draws inspiration the entrepreneurial adventure of Rocca Brettia, a winery that in its name reminds the local cultural heritage and in the effluvium of its wine the scents and flavours of the woods and grapes of Calabria. The vineyards kissed by the sun extend over a large hill, at 500 a.s.l. in Donnici Inferiore, close to Cosenza. They are surrounded by the colours of the Mediterranean greenery and protected by secular olive trees, sheltered from the fresh wind of the Sila. Here passion and competence are intertwined with a strong innovative vocation combined with the local tradition, giving life to a wine whose sips tell the deep connection with the territory and the unspoiled charm of nature. A tribute to the land, expression of love and dedication, in which the soul and excellence of Calabria are unveiled.

Starting from the very first plants in 2006, today it owns 20 hectares of organically cultivated vineyards and 5 hectares of olive groves. The winery has been operating since 2013, when the first 14,000 bottles of Magliocco were produced, without any external intervention, to ensure maximum recognition of the territory and its vines (terroir). Our first autochthonous white wine, Greco Bianco, was born in 2014. In the 2016 harvest, we vinified our first rosé wine from Aglianico grapes. In the 2018 harvest, we vinified the new autochthonous white wine from Montonico grapes. Today the winery is driven with passion and enthusiasm by the young winemaker Valerio Cipolla.

CAMPANIACampania’s average annual wine production of 185 million litres (9th in volume among the regions) includes 16% DOC/DOCG and 15% IGT. Red wine accounts for 57% of Campania’s production.

It’s become increasingly evident why the ancient Romans admired Campania Felix as the most felicitous of wine regions. Over the last decade, the region of Naples has dramatically improved the quality of its modern wines, now classifying about a third of the production as DOC or IGT.

Evidence of the new era is the elevation of four ancient wines to the elite category of DOCG: Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, Aglianico and Greco di Tufo.

The Romans favoured the vineyards along the coast north of Naples where Falernian, the most treasured wine of the empire, was grown. They also praised the wines of volcanic Vesuvius and the wooded hills of Avellino. Even earlier, the Greeks had recognised the privileged nature of the place, introducing vines which still stand today in Aglianico, Greco and Falanghina.

In Campania a majority of producers strives to make the most of native vines, including an honour roll of so-called “archaeological varieties” which do indeed date back to antiquity. The noblest of red varieties is Aglianico, which makes the red Taurasi, as well as the red Falerno del Massico and others. Greco, a name applied to various vines prominent in the south, reaches heights in Greco di Tufo. Falanghina, which seems to have been the base of the white version of Falernian, has become the region’s fastest spreading variety.

Campania’s DOC zones also include the fabled islands of Capri and Ischia, as well as the recently revived Peninsola Sorrentina and Costa d’Amalfi.

The recent region wide IGT of Campania, which applies to red, white and rose’ wines and nine native varietals, has rapidly increased the quantity of classified wine from a region that is fast gaining in prestige in Italy and abroad.

In this year he took over the company Vigne D’Albore in the commune of Pastorano in the province of Caserta. With the change of ownership they grubbed-up the old vines and planted new ones suitable for the modern cultivation techniques. At the death of his father Orlando, Benito took over the vine cultivation and modernized the cellars with new production and bottling techniques specializing in the sparkling wine production from their own grapes: Asprinio di Aversa for the “spumante” Flavus and the Asprosecco, and Aglianico for the “spumante” Chantal Rosé and Rosso Bollicine.

EMILIA – ROMAGNAEmilia Romagna’s average annual wine production of 660 million liters (3rd in volume among the regions) includes 23% DOC/DOCG and 37% IGT. Red wine accounts for about 55% of Emilia Romagna’s production.

Emilia Romagna’s wines might be considered northern Italy’s most eccentric, different on the whole from those of their neighbours, often facile in style but always refreshingly individualistic. In Emilia the premier wine is Lambrusco, in frothy shades of purple to pink, made from grapes grown on high trellised vines, mainly in the flatlands south of the Po. Romagna’s wines come primarily from the native Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Albana, the variety the accounted for Italy’s first white DOCG. Lambrusco is produced in volume in the four DOC zones, around Modena and Reggio, though the wine is still not well known abroad in its authentic dry style. Lambrusco, with its zesty fruit flavours and low alcohol content, matches ideally with salami and prosciutto, pizza and a range of fast food.

Vineyards in the foothills of the Apenines to the south render fun-loving whites made from Malvasia, Trebbiano and Ortrugo and zesty reds from Barbera and Bonarda, but there is a definite trend in the DOC zones of Colli Piacentini, Colli Bolognesi and Colli di Parma to make still and somewhat serious wines from such varieties as Sauvignon, Chardonnay, the Pinots, Barbera, Cabernet and Merlot.

The hills south of Imola, Faenza, Forlí, Cesena and Rimini are known for wines from the native Albana, Sangiovese and Trebbiano, all of which carry the name Romagna. Albana di Romagna, which emerged in 1987 as Italy’s first DOCG white wine, is most often dry and still with a distinctive almond undertone and occasionally some complexity.

The favourite of Romagnans is Sangiovese, usually a robust red with a certain charm in its straightforward fruity flavours. But increasingly producers of Sangiovese are making reserve wine of greater depth of bouquet and flavour with the capacity to age gracefully.

Emilia Romagna has ten IGTs which account for about 35% of total production.IGT: Bianco di Castelfranco Emilia, Emilia or Dell’Emilia, Fontana del Taro, Forlí, Modena or Provincia di Modena, Ravenna, Rubicone, Sillaro or Bianco di Sillaro, Terre di Veleja, Val Tidone. DOCG: Albana di Romagna. DOC: Bosco Eliceo, Cagnina di Romagna, Colli Bolognesi (Colline di Oliveto, Colline di Riosto, Colline Marconiane, Monte San Pietro, Serravalle, Zola Predosa), Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto, Colli della Romagna Centrale, Colli di Faenza, Colli di Imola, Colli di Parma, Colli di Rimini, Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa, Colli Piacentini (Gutturnio, Monterosso Val D’Arda, Trebbianino Val Trebbia) Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Modena or Di Modena, Pagadebit di Romagna (Bertinoro), Reggiano, Reno, Romagna Albana Spumante, Sangiovese di Romagna, Trebbiano di Romagna.

FRIULI VENEZIA-GIULIAF.V.G average annual wine production of 110 million litres (12th in volume among the regions) includes 65% DOC/DOCG and 20% IGT. White wine accounts for about 60% of Friuli’s production.

The compact region of FVG, overlooking the northern Adriatic Sea with borders on Austria and Slovenia continues to set the pace with modern Italian white wine. Drawing from worthy native varieties and the choicest of the international array, Friulans have applied studied vineyard techniques and avantgarde enology to the production of highly distinctive whites, as well as some eminently attractive reds.

Friuli has 2 DOC zones of outstanding class in Collio Goriziano or simply Collio, and Colli Orientali del Friuli, adjacent areas that follow the border of Slovenia from Gorizia west and northwest to Tarcento. Singled out for DOCG

status are two rare and coveted sweet white wines: Ramandolo, from the Verduzzo grape grown a village north of Udine, and the legendary Picolit of Colli Orientali. Carso is a unique zone in the hills above the seaport and regional capital of Trieste. The other DOC zones called Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Annia and Friuli Latisana cover low hills or plains. Yet quality there can be convincing, notably from Isonzo, which rivals Collio and Colli Orientali for the class of certain wines. Grave, the region’s largest and most productive zone, also produces wines of distinction.

Friuli whites had long been dominated by Tocai Friulano, a variety related to Sauvignon Vert or Sauvignonasse. But a European court ruled that Tocai must use another name so as not to be confused with the Tokay of Hungay, which is the name of a wine but not a vine. Friulano was the name they reluctantly adopted, while the varieties formerly known as Tocai Italico and Tocai Rosso have become Tai and Tai Rosso.

Friuli’s reds were traditionally light and fruity, best to drink within two to five years of the harvest. That style applied to the predominant Merlot and Cabernet Franc, as well as to Pinot Nero and the worthy native variety of Refosco. But many winemakers have heightened structure and nuance by blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other varieties and aging the wine in oak barrels. Friulans have shown an encouraging tendency to revive varieties that had been neglected. Foremost among the legends is Picolit, a white that ranked as one of Europe’s finest sweet wines around 1800, when it was favoured by the Hapsburgs and other royal families. IGT: Alto Livenza, Venezia Giulia, Venezie or Delle Venezie. DOCG: Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit, Cialla Picolit, Ramandolo. DOC: Carso, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Collio Goriziano, Friuli Annia, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo or Isonzo del Friuli, Friuli Latisana, Lison- Prmaggiore (shared with Veneto), Prosecco (shared with Veneto).

The Perleo winemaking factory is located in the heart of Friuli, at Rauscedo (PN), a historical winemaking area positioned between the Meduna and the Tagliamento river valleys. The soil in our land is rich with minerals, composed of dolomitic rocks, limestone and calcified sands, substances giving our wines their unique structure and aromatic scents. Our winery is a family-run business, in which extreme attention is placed on pruning, defoliation and the choice of the grape bunches. Harvesting is conducted manually, choosing the best grapes. Our factory covers a few hectares cared for with natural methods, and in complete respect of nature and the environment, without the use of chemical and/or synthetic products. Our production volumes are purposely limited by means of a careful selection of the grapes during harvesting. Once the harvesting is done the grapes are processed following all-natural methods, without the addition of chemical correctors. Our wines will then remain in French oak barrels for about a year with its own yeasts; then, once bottled, the wine ages for about three years prior to sale.

PIEMONTEPiedmont, Italy’s westernmost region with borders on Switzerland and France, is hemmed in by the Alps and the Apennines, which explains why its name means “foot of the mountain”. Though it ranks only seventh among the regions in total production, Piedmont is a giant of Italian wine in every other way. Piedmont stands proud as the region with the most DOC/DOCG zones (58) and with the largest percentage of wines officially classified (86%). The region produces about 16% of Italy’s DOC/DOCG wines.Piedmont is admired above all for its red wines, led by the regal Barolo and Barbaresco. But the most popular of the region’s wines worldwide is the white, sweet, bubbly Asti.An overwhelming majority of the wines of Piedmont derive from native vines. Beyond the noble Nebbiolo – source of Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme and Roero, which are all DOCG – Barbera ranks as the most popular vine for reds, followed by Dolcetto, which is enjoyed for its mellow, round flavours. Brachetto makes a sweet, fragrant bubbly red that is DOCG as Brachetto d’Acqui. Freisa and Grignolino lead a host of local varieties in rounding out the honour roll of reds.Piedmont is a leading producer of sparkling wines foremost among them is Asti, whose DOCG applies to

both sparkling Spumante – or simply Asti – and the softly bubbly Moscato d’Asti. With an average annual output of nearly 80 million bottles, the Asti appellation ranks third in volume after Chianti and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo among Italy’s classified wines.Piedmont is also a major producer of dry sparkling wines by both the classical (in bottle) and tank fermentation methods. Alta Langa DOC applies to sparkling white, rose’ and red wines made by the classic method.Among still whites, Gavi, from the Cortese grape, shows a crisp yet elegant style that explains why admirers consider it one of the best with seafood and why it was promoted to DOCG. Smoothly fruity Arneis continues to gain ground under the DOCG of Roero, where the light, zesty Favorita is also emerging. The ancient variety of Erbaluce di Caluso makes both dry white wines, also sparkling, and the esteemed Passito Riserva that ages for five years. A revelation in white wine is the Timorasso under Colli Tortonesi DOC.

The “Oscar Bosio” winery is in Valdivilla, a village perched on the beautiful hills of Santo Stefano Belbo. “La Bruciata” hill, where the winery is located, offers an all-round view of the surrounding vineyards, the Alps and the Alba plain. These are the languid, soft coloured lands described by the great poet from Santo Stefano Belbo: Cesare Pavese, but also those characterised by the harshness of fatigue and sacrifice written about by Beppe Fenoglio. It is here that the Bosio family purchased the company in 1954, and began growing moscato grapes. Since then four generations have grown up, each embodying a passion for the vineyard and respect for the land.

Cascina Gilli lies in the Basso Monferrato, between Castelnuovo Don Bosco and Albugnano, on a spine of hilltops composed of greyish-white soil, with uninterrupted expanses of vineyards in every direction, a terroir that has always produced wines prized for their full body and complex aromas. Gianni Vergnano, who has directed the winery estate since 1983, has poured into it his efforts and passion, with the result that Cascina Gilli stands as one of Piedmont’s most prestigious and influential wineries. A large proportion of the labour over these years, which today is carried forward with his son Paolo, has gone into recovering grape varieties native to these hills, and that has substantially contributed to the respect Cascina Gilli has won for its Freisa, Barbera d’Asti, Bonarda Piemonte, and Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco.

PUGLIAPuglia’s average annual wine production of 700 million litres (2nd in volume among the regions) includes about 12% DOC and 19% IGT. Red and Rose’ wines account for slightly more than half of Puglia’s production.

Puglia is now bringing its wines to a new high standard of quality. Knowns as the ‘cellar of Italy’, it produces wines that have been well known since ancient times (circa 7-8th century B.C.), the time of Magna Graecia.Under the Romans, Apulia wines were exported around the civilised world. In the days of the Renaissance, Lorenzo il Magnifico found them most acceptable, and after the French occupation of Italy, huge quantities were shipped to France.

In recent years the region has seen a large-scale renovation of its wine sector. Steady improvement in quality along with an increase in quantity of classified wine (including the six IGT categories) has led to a growing reputation for wines widely appreciated for value abroad.

Puglia can be divided roughly in two viticultural sectors by a hypothetical line crossing the region between Brindisi and Taranto. To the north, the terrain consists of plains and rolling hills where the climate is temperate. Dry wines from this area tend to have moderate strength, with impressive fruit, good acidity and ample bouquet. Red wines generally derive from the native Uva di Troia or Bombino Nero, as well as Montepulciano and Sangiovese. White wines are dominated by the Verdeca variety, though Bianco d’Alessano, Malvasia, Trebbiano and Bombino Bianco are also evident.

South of the Brindisi – Taranto line lies Salento, a peninsula of low, rolling hills that extends between the Adriatic and Ionian seas to the easternmost point of Italy. Though hot, Salento is not quite torrid, thanks to the play of sea currents and breezes that waft across the Adriatic from the Balkans. Salento’s traditional wines were the powerful, inky reds from Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, but increasing attention is being given to fresher reds and rosés, as well as to some unexpectedly bright and fruity white wine.

Our winery is located in Puglia, in Southern Italy. We were born as producers of “Primitivo”. Most of our lands are near the sea, in the suited triangle of “Primitivo” in Manduria, in the municipalities of Torricella, Sava and Lizzano (Taranto’s province). The area is characterized by “terra rossa”, a red clay soil type produced by the disintegration of limestone rich in minerals and iron, which contribute to its characteristic colour. Compared to the majority of clay soils, this land has surprising drainage characteristics that make it a type of soil particularly suitable for wine production. The vineyards are characterized by non watered saplings that reach the average age of 30 years, with peaks of 50/60 years for the stocks.

The ingredients of this story are two: the Mazzone family and their passion for this land. It all started in the ‘70s, when Domenico, father of Francesco, Giuseppe and Massimo inherited small and selected land plots in the countryside of Ruvo from his father. Vineyards, orchards and olive groves were the scenery of that era, which then became the company reality. The company took shape after Francesco, the eldest son, first obtained a diploma in oenologist at the wine institute of Locorotondo and later, the title of oenologist at the university of Ancona; at that point the dream became reality. The construction of the underground cellar, of the new and modern vineyards, the purchase of the first french oak barrels and barriques of the Garbellotto company, the shiny steel tanks for the vinification, were the first real steps towards a new life.

Grapes are carefully selected in the vineyards and the cellar treatments are never invasive and don’t interfere with full aromatic expression of the wines we produce, whose main characters are sophistication and elegance. The passion for winemaking has been handed down through several generations, preserving and enriching the features of the most important local wine variety, the Primitivo di Gioia del Colle. SARDEGNASardinia’s average annual wine production of 80 million litres (15th in volume among the regions) includes 28% DOC/DOCG and 22% IGT. Overall, the region produces slightly more red wine than white.

The island’s most productive vineyard area is the Campidano, the fertile plains and low rolling hills northwest of the capital and major port of Cagliari. The varieties grown there – Giro’, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco and Nuragus – carry the name of Cagliari in their denominations.

The wooded slopes of the northern Gallura peninsula and the north-western coastal area around Sassari and Alghero are noted for premium whites. Vermentino, a variety also planted in Liguria and parts of Tuscany, makes whites of depth and style under Vermentino di Gallura DOCG. The island-wide production of Vermentino di Sardegna DOC accounts for greater volume. A distinguished Sardinian wine is Vernaccia di Oristano a sherry-like amber wine with a rich array of nuances in bouquet and flavour.

A popular white variety is Nuragus, which is believed to have been brought there by the Phoenicians. Its name derives from the island’s prehistoric stone towers known as nuraghe.

The island’s important red varieties are Cannonau, a relative of the Granacha brought from Spain, and Carignano and Monica, also of Spanish origin. Cannonau and Monica can be dry or sweet. A rising star among red wines is Carignano del Sulcis, from the southwest. A curiosity among the reds is the moderately sweet Giro’ di Cagliari. In addition to its 20 wines of DOC and DOCG, Sardinia has 15 IGTs, the most of any region.

SICILIASicily’s average annual wine production of 635 million litres (4th in volume among the regions) includes about 4% DOC/DOCG and 25% IGT. White wine accounts for some 70% of Sicily’s production.

Contrasts are not the least of those things in which Sicily abounds. So perhaps it is not surprising that this ancient island boasts one of Italy’s most dynamic wine industries or that a region noted chiefly in the past for strong and often sweet amber Marsala and Moscato has put new emphasis on dry, modern wines – both red and white.

Sicily’s rising status is reflected in the promotion of Cerasuolo di Vittoria to DOCG. That pale but potent red from Nero d’Avola and Frappato is recognised as Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico from around the town of Vittor
