OUR VISION Our vision is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment. OUR HISTORY The Alannah & Madeline Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996. Our programs are in one third of all Australian schools and more than half of all Australian public libraries, and we support 10,000 children in refuges or foster homes across Australia every year. We have reached almost 2 million children and their families nationwide since we began in 1997. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT The Foundation relies on donations and the broader community to support our work. For more information or to make a donation, please visit amf.org.au or call 03 9697 0666. ABOUT Buddy Bags Buddy Bags provide essential items to thousands of children in emergency accommodation. Each year, tens of thousands of children in Australia enter emergency accommodation – some arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. In response to continued demands to support children in emergency care, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation introduced Buddy Bags in 2007. Buddy Bags are backpacks containing new and essential items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, facewasher, pillowcase, pyjamas, socks, and underwear, as well as a book, photo frame, activity kit and a teddy bear or soft toy. In addition to providing material aid, Buddy Bags help restore a sense of safety and security into children’s lives during this time of trauma – which is one of the vital first steps to recovery. Buddy Bags are something they can call their own, no matter where they go. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation has delivered more than 70,000 Buddy Bags to children across the country, but there’s still plenty of work to do. What difference does my donation make? A donation of $50 can help provide one child in need with a complete Buddy Bag full of toiletries, pyjamas, socks, underwear, a pillowcase, book, photo frame, activity kit and a teddy bear. The Alannah & Madeline Foundation relies on community support and donations to help deliver Buddy Bags to children in emergency accommodation.
