About Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham The Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a dream come true, a dream nursed by Mata Amritanandamayi to have a centre of excellence in learning for the benefit of all. The dream became a reality in 1994 when the School of Engineering was opened in an obscure village, Ettimadai, at the foothills Bouluvanpatty ranges of Western Ghats in the Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu. It was indeed a modest beginning with just 120 students and 13 faculty members. In less than two decades, Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham has blossomed into a multi-disciplinary, multi- campus centre that offers over 150 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Journalism, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences, Education, Microbiology, Hospital Management, Visual Media Studies, Communication, Social Work and Nanosciences and Ayurveda. Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (AMMA), one of the foremost humanitarian leaders in the world today, is the Chancellor of the University. Presently, the Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham University spread over five campuses in three different States- Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka - has a population of around 16,000, a faculty strength of 2000 and conducting over 150 UG, PG and Doctoral programmes. Presently, there are 300 Ph.D/ DM holders as faculty in the University. The staff-student ratio in the University at about 1:8 is one of the best prevailing in the country, especially in private universities . The University today is having a total land area of about 900 acres and a built-up space of about 8million square feet Recognition, local and international came in an unending flow. Quite deservedly Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham was conferred the “University” status under ‘Section 3 of UGC Act 1956’ by the Government of India in 2003. The University was also granted ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. It has also been ranked in the Ivy league of Indian Universities along with such famous institutions as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. In a recent review of Deemed Universities by a high-power committee of reputed academicians, populary known as the Tandon Committee, set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Develpoment, Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham was placed in Category1. In Tamil Nadu, besides Amrita, only the Chennai Mathmatical Institute, a Deemed University, was given this recognition. For the country as a whole only 11 private universities presently enjoy this privilege. Based on the evaluation of all the campuses and programmes by a peer review committee, the University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with ‘A’ grade.
