Connecting to country Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies is designed for all Queensland students. The two-year course examines important Australian events from various points of view to develop a greater understanding of the following topics: Australian history, national identities, constitutional reform, legislation and mass media representations in current Australia.

Through study and self-reflection, young people will develop a connection to the Australian environment and build a deep appreciation of its land, seas, waterways and significant places.

By examining Australian history and Indigenous perspectives on this history, young people will build a pride in our Indigenous cultures. This pride underpins our national identity and reconciliation in a futures-focused society.

Through active engagement with Indigenous communities, young people gain a meaningful and empathetic understanding of Aboriginal perspectives and Torres Strait Islander perspectives — and a greater understanding of who they are within Australian society.

What is the subject about? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies is an approved QSA subject. The two-year course covers three concept areas (culture, identity, origins and change) as well as local area studies and a selection of electives. The course has a social sciences approach that focuses on analysing, synthesising and evaluating information. Additionally, the course teaches management skills that observe cultural protocols allowing students to plan, organise and communicate, as well as gathering and recording information effectively when working with an Indigenous community.

Local area studies are key features of the subject. They help students develop and demonstrate their understanding of what the course sets out to achieve, while establishing and strengthening relationships with local communities.

Critical thinking and management skills Many professions and organisations value people who are flexible and open to change. The critical thinking and management skills that are part of the course will help prepare young people for tertiary studies in a wide range of fields, including the social sciences, anthropology, environmental science and arts–law.

Building a skilled workforce with cross-cultural understandings Cross-cultural training courses are important for many public sector jobs (local, state and federal), large companies and small businesses. This subject connects with these organisations by emphasising teamwork and focusing on particular management processes. These include observing cultural protocols, accessing and recording appropriate shared information, and being aware of good time management.
