RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 9 Term: 2 Monday 17 th June, 2019 Schools Spectacular 2019 Congratulations to our awesome Schools Spectacular crew. Forty-one students across the Combined Choir, Combined Dance and Aboriginal Dance ensembles have been selected to represent Leeton High School at the Schools Spectacular performance extravaganza on the 22 nd and 23 rd of November. In addition, Emika Gooley in Year 9 will also take her place as feature dancer in the Combined Dance ensemble, which is a fantastic achievement. We continue to make the grade in a very competitive field and we are enormously proud of this. This is a magnificent achievement by our students and our teachers and we wish them all the best for their preparation. Careers Expo Tuesday 18 th June Our highly regarded annual Careers Expo is on Tuesday 18 th June from 9.30am – 1.30pm. We are expecting around 1400 hundred students from across the Riverina who will have access to 80 exhibitors including Universities, the Armed Forces and employment and personnel agencies onsite to provide valuable information to all our visitors regarding future career pathways. Needless to say, organising an event as large as this takes an enormous amount of work and we thank Mrs Goring our Careers Advisor and Mrs Palmer for their tireless efforts to make this event happen. Amber Parr Riverina School Based Apprentice of the Year Mrs Schmetzer and I had the great pleasure of seeing Amber Parr recognised as School Based Apprentice of the Year at the Training Services NSW Riverina Awards in Wagga on Friday night. Amber was the successful finalist beating another three candidates for the top award. Amber, in Year 12, is currently completing a school-based apprenticeship through the ANZ Bank here in Leeton and is clearly doing very well. Congratulations to Amber and her family on this great achievement. Year 10 and 11 HSC Minimum Standards Online testing This week and next week HSC Minimum Standards testing is scheduled for all of Years 10 and those Year 11 students who did not meet the Level 3 benchmark for Reading, Writing and Numeracy last year. Meeting the Level 3 benchmarks across the three areas provides students with the award of the Higher School Certificate at the end of Year 12 and a nod to future employers that the desired industry standard literacy and numeracy levels have been reached to do the job well. Testing occurs twice a year and is available up until two years after students complete Year 12. If you have any questions regarding Minimum Standards online testing please contact me on 0269532122. Practice tests can be found at https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum- standard/online-tests/what-to-expect-in-the-tests/sample-test-questions Winter Uniform As the colder weather has hit, it is important that students dress to keep warm and they dress in correct school uniform as determined by our community many years ago. Just a reminder that hoodies are not school uniform including Riverina hoodies. Riverina gear is acceptable as long as it is not a hoodie. Leggings/tights are also not appropriate to wear at school. Coloured tops or pants that do not meet the correct school uniform requirements are not appropriate. If you need assistance to purchase the correct uniform, please come and see Mr Morschel or myself in the front office. Our uniform requirements are attached to the newsletter. ~~DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING & LEARNING~~

At the recent assembly I asked students to put their hand up if they found school to be hard. A large number of them did. In my newsletter report I will focus on the importance of adopting a growth mindset along with the need to attend school as often as possible. In my speech I mentioned that school only gets harder when students miss a day, and for the minority of them, if they skip a class. Sometimes it might be tempting for some of our children to skip or stay home because they are tired or find it challenging to understand what is going on in class. But missing a class or day only makes it worse because they are not learning something that will help them understand a lesson later on. Over 30 years ago, influential educator Carol Dweck became interested in students' attitudes about failure. Carol and her team noticed that some students rebounded while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks or challenges faced. After studying the behaviour of thousands of children, Dr. Dweck coined the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. Their findings were that when students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement. In summary, the process of learning is often difficult, however I urge our students to attend school as often as possible, to avoid it becoming too hard, but I also encourage our students to see challenges as a good thing by adopting a growth mindset approach. We have recently introduced a system whereby parents are notified at the end of the day in the event that their child misses a class throughout the day. To date, I am grateful for the support that parents have provided through timely communication with me, by explaining their reason for their child’s absence. A small number of issues have occurred whereby a student has actually attended class, but has been marked away. At Leeton High School we have 475 students. On this number, teachers need to account for 2,375 interactions on their rolls each day or 11,875 interactions for the week. Schools are busy places with students often requiring to be out of class for some reason or another. It can be expected that the odd error will occur and I encourage parents to be understanding and continue to support the school if you receive SMS requesting more information regarding an unexplained absence. Since introducing this system, we have seen an improvement in our attendance rate. In partnership with parents, and the wider community, Leeton High School would like to see this increase throughout the rest of 2019. Glenn Duggan Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning)

UPCOMING EVENTS

Charles Sturt University Explore Day Wagga On the 25th June students from years 10-12 will be checking out what university is really like. They will choose from a range of workshops at Charles Sturt University and find out which uni courses are right for them. Students will have fun with hands-on activities and information sessions, and get exclusive access to lecturers and students who can answer all their questions.

Macquarie University InRoads Excursion From the 2-5 July, 17 lucky students will get to experience university life by attending the MQ InRoads program in Sydney.
