Story Time in the Snow2015 CLARKS SUMMIT FESTIVAL OF ICE

Local storyteller spins ‘Frozen’ fairy talesby Anna CouttsSPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN

Once upon a time, in a land not sofar from here, there lived a storytellerso captivating that people came from allaround just to hear her tales. All those who wish to travel to a mys-

tical land on an adventure filled withprincesses, magic and happily-ever-af-ters can hop on their dragon, broomstickor enchanted carriage and head over tothe Clarks Summit Festival of Ice onFriday, Feb. 13, where local storytellerChris Arcangelo will spin stories at theannual Family Fun Faire at the ClarksSummit Borough Building, 304 S. StateSt., at 6 and 6:30 p.m.Arcangelo, who teaches at St. Greg-

ory’s Early Childhood Center in ClarksGreen, explained that storytelling al-lows her to bring her love for reading toa wider audience.“I’ve always enjoyed reading to my

children and as a volunteer for theAbington Community Library,” shesaid. “Reading to children once a weekfor storytelling was rather exciting. Fromthere, I was asked to do storytelling fordifferent organizations and that was thebeginning and start of my professionalstorytelling.”To bring her stories to life, Arcangelo

often dresses the part of the bard or amain character in the story.“I usually dress up for stories, either

as the character or the person telling thestory,” she said. “There are also storiesin which I just talk about the story in myown words.”She not only uses elaborate costumes,

but also props and character voices forthese roles. These added elements givethe stories an entertaining, theatricalquality that the whole family can enjoy. One of Arcangelo’s favorite roles to

get into is that of Druzella, the stepsisterof Cinderella.“I like Druzella’s version of the sto-

ry because it’s fun,” she said. “Druzellais exciting and has a lot of spunk. It isgreat to be able to visit schools and tell

Chris Arcangelo will spin “Frozen” fairy tales in keeping with the theme for the 2015Clarks Summit Festival of Ice on Friday, Feb. 13, at 6 and 6:30 p.m. during the FamilyFun Faire at the Clarks Summit Borough Building, 304 S. State St.

the teachers they have been telling a talltale over the years and that even WaltDisney forgot to tell Druzella’s version.”Arcangelo has spent quite a few years

recounting tales as part of the Festival ofIce’s Family Fun Faire activities. Previousyears’ stories include “The Snowman,”“Druzella,” “Something from Nothing,”“Where the Wild Things Are” and “ThePolar Express.”Each story correlated with the festi-

val’s theme that year and Arcangelo islooking to follow that trend for her up-coming performance.“This year, the Festival of Ice’s theme

is ‘Frozen Fairy Tales,’” she said. “Soright after the parade, I will be doingtwo storytelling sessions of stories from‘Frozen.’”“I dressed up [in costume] for ‘Druzel-

la’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’”she continued. “The other stories weredone with props. I am working on a ‘Fro-zen’ costume for this year.”Ice Festival participants of all ages

attend Arcangelo’s storytelling perfor-mances. Whether the listeners are 3years old or 90, all are welcome to listento a classic tale, a new story or a twist onan old favorite.Arcangelo revealed that her favorite

part of storytelling is seeing the audi-ence’s reactions to the tale. For her, theage range of the Festival of Ice crowdonly adds to that excitement.“It’s quite an experience to see the re-

actions to my storytelling,” she said. “Es-pecially with such a wide range of ages. It’s priceless.”The trick to her elaborate storytelling

technique is to truly adopt the personaof the character she is playing. Not onlydoes it add to the story’s depth, it’s alsoa lot of fun for her to take on another’spersonality.“As for me,” she said, “once I start

telling the story, I become the character. It’s marvelous to be able to jump into thebook and be that character.”

For many people, their dog or cat is theirlittle prince or princess. Now, a new store inClarks Summit hopes to put the “tails” in“fairy tales.”“Frozen Furry Tails” was created by Re-

becca Martino, owner of Stately Pet Supply,515 S. State St., as a way to allow the pets inher customer base to participate in the 2015Clarks Summit Festival of Ice. The weekend-long event at the store will give owners thechance to display their pets in costume, ei-ther during the annual parade on Friday, Feb.13, or for a Facebook-based costume compe-tition or a private photography session.“I can’t tell you how excited and nervous

I am about my first year in the festival,” Mar-tino said. “My husband and I had a weddingthat required little more than planning anappointment at the local court house. Coor-dinating large events is not my strong point,so I just hope to be able to do my best for thegroups that stand to benefit.”Stately Pet Supply opened several months

ago, combining Martino’s love for animalsand her own experience where discoveringa certain dog food saved her pit bull, Betsy, from a food allergy.

“In my search and investigations, I beganto stumble upon the often unsettling truthsabout commercially-made pet foods,” Marti-no said. “While there are quite a few laws setto control ingredients, there are just as manylaws that don’t exist. It can get pretty disgust-ing. My hope is that when you walk in mystore, you can close your eyes and do a pin-the-tail on the food, and know that it’s likelyworlds better in quality than the majority ofcommercial pet foods out there.”Martino said that she will host an all-day

adoption event with the Griffin Pond Ani-mal Shelter on Friday, Feb. 13, a second all-day adoption event with the Northeast PAPet Fund and Rescue and private mini pho-tography sessions with Fetching Fido Pho-tography on Sunday, Feb. 15. Proceeds fromall of the events will benefit the shelter, res-cue and for a new water line at the AbingtonDog Park. The store will also host a variety ofraffles throughout the weekend.“We have a unique opportunity here to

really make a dent in fundraising for theseorganizations,”Martino said. “The pressure ison and we can’t wait to help!”For more information on Stately Pet Sup-
