From the President's desk:

Swami Vivekananda had said "So long we live so long we learn."Never has this adage been so appropriate than TODAY

Staying mentally active, by learning new things, talking with others, playing games and solving puzzles keeps the mind alert longer.

There's a lot of truth in "if you don't use it, you lose it" in all aspects of life at any age.

Learning is the Mantra for survival. We all have to move forward and learn.Let us all break away from the shackles of complacency and not be cushioned in our closet of thinking that, It is all over for us. We have done well so far and now we can sit back, nor promote this mindset: "we are old and not cut out for the modern trend"

We Can And We Will. - should be our endeavor

Education is very often confused for Qualification. What learning means is that we should focus on anything and everything, be it arts, singing, dancing, cooking, writing skills, poetry and it is a never ending list

We must first learn to have the verve, zeal and burning desire to explore and start asking questions like Why? and How?

Let us prove to our own self we are capable. After all, did we not all learn how to SMS, and other Smart Phone Applications as well as the Computer?

Was it not daunting on the first DAY? Did we give up or said “NO”So keep on learning. Let the trip to MARS motivate you to Go and LEARN

Calendar of eventsFirst Monday Meet in July

The 1st Monday meet in July was, as usual, a very well attended programme The overcast sky and slight drizzle at 4 PM prompted the meeting to be conducted indoors in the School Hall The hall was packed to capacity. The Agenda was read out and the three members who donated chaiars, Mrs Gertrude Ramanand - 2 chairs; Mr A K Raja - 2 chairs and Mrs Jana Janakiram - 1 chair, were thanked . This was timely, as the need is rising with the healthy increase in the attendance.

This brought in a tremendous response and several more members offered to donate more chairs ( there will be an additional purchase of around 15 chairs ; names would be given once the chairs are added )

Then, Members were requested to give in their names for the Annual Day Cultural Programme, to Mrs Pratima Mehta and Mrs Malleshwari.

Thereafter, the very interesting demonstration started. Ms Vasudha and her team from Nestle group showed 3 recipes - 2 savory items with Maggi Noodles and a sweet with Milkmaid. She was very creative - made a mouse with the sweet which was well received .Members suggested it should be called bunny rabbit, Mickey Mouse etc. While explaining the procedure she ably kept the audience engaged by asking questions related to Nestle products giving away a lot of prizes to those who came up with the right answers. She also conducted a novel Tambola game and again distributed prizes. The lucky dip from the list of Members and other prizes brought in a lot of fun. Ms Vasudha was very articulate and explained everything very patiently. The participation from the male members indicated their interest in the event. She received a very good round of applause .The snacks made by the Nestle team were served with cold refreshing Ice Tea.

Other members like Mr Gururajan, Mrs Kanakwalli and Mr Rajiah celebrated their happiness by bringing in more snacks /sweets. So all in all, it was, indeed, a very High Tea for all! There was a surprise item of the evening – Guess what?

In the last Meet, Col Bhasker Reddy had suggested that Mother's Day should be celebrated. To which the undersigned added that Fathers Day too is important . After all, it takes two to tango and to implement this mood Kamakshi and Nalini distributed gifts to the men folk . They were all very happy and appreciated it. There were several phone calls after the meet specially appreciating the note on the cover of the parcel containing the writing pad and pen. A very big thanks to Nalini for her special touchThe agenda for the next Meet was announced by Mr Janakiram, a musical evening, orchestra played by the visually challenged..We are looked forward to this very commendable feat. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs. Malleshwari, Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and expressed it. SCF ANNUAL DAY CELEBRATIONS

6th SEPTEMBER 2014

Senior Citizen Forum, SCF, Secunderabad, celebrated its 21st year amidst laughter, camaraderie and celebrations. The Annual Day celebrations were held at Belson's Taj Hotel in Secunderabad. The ambience was good, the response encouraging and the Cultural Show was wonderful. The uniqueness of this Show was that there were no invitees as Chief Guest or Guest of Honour -- every Member was the Chief Guest and every Guest was welcomed with grace and honour.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Speech by the President, Mrs. Kamakshi Hatti. She welcomed everyone warmly and spoke about the Forum and its activities briefly. She was happy to inform the gathering that all SCF Monthly meetings were well attended, emphasizing the fact that the attendance at the Monthly Meets was now better than before and that the Membership was growing steadily. With her friendly disposition she briefed the audience about the Cultural Programme coming up, told them to please partake of the snacks and the coffee they would be served during the Show and urged them not to leave without having their lunch .

The programme started with a Prayer said by Mr & Mrs Kishen Agarwal. They requested the audience to say the prayer after them which was willingly done. They then chanted some prayers and lightened the spirit by evoking laughter in all and, laughter they say is the best medicine. The humble, soulful rendering of the prayers was appreciated by all. This was followed by the Ganesh Vandana which was performed by Nalini, Surekha, Preeti, Kaushalya, Veena and Indira. Each of the ladies represented different States by wearing the saree as it is worn in that State like Maharashtra, Bengal, Coorg Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. They walked in gracefully, holding colorful flowers in their hands with which they worshipped Ganeshji who was sitting resplendently on the stage. A fitting beginning for the Day.

Smt Mangalam, Smt Kanakavalli rendered few Bhartiar compositions with great devotion and melody.

There is no age for pranks and mischief was what 'JO' proved in the enjoyable 'BACHKAANI PANCHRANGI KHICHDI' . It was an enjoyable presentation of TALKS AND TUNES, in 5 languages…English, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil; a medley of nursery rhymes, poems songs, chants etc. 'JO' dear friends is our active Octogenarian - Mr. Kannan.

This was followed by a melodious rendering of a song by Smt Lata Mitta who had the audience rapt and happy.

It was really wonderful to watch some Senior Citizens enthusiastically taking part in the Fancy Dress programme. Lt . Col. Dr. Prakash Rao, dressed like Mahakavi Pottanna had the audience spell bound by reciting a lengthy poem by Pottanna. What a good memory power for an Octogenarian!! Next came Mr Mallesh living the role of Lal Bahadur Shastri, requesting his countrymen to rise to the cause of Farmers and help India's agriculture to grow..Jai Jawan Jai Kisan was his favourite line, and Mr Mallesh brought out this message very well, Following him was Mr Seetaram Agarwal as Allama Iqbal. Mr Agarwal roused the patriotic instincts of his listeners….Sare Jahan se Achha !! The Principal Architect of the Constitution of India, Mr Ambedkar was very truly represented by Mr M V Satyanarayana. Next came the Actor turned politician the first Actor to become a Chief Minister….MG Ramachandran who helped build Anna DMK. Mr Ashok had everyone believe that MGR was in their presence.

With such a wonderful fancy dress presentation it was natural that the theme of EKTA.. National Integration should be depicted also. Showing us that everyone is equal irrespective of religion was Mr Bhaskar Rao who like a Magician presented the emblems and signs of all religion, supported by a very appropriate and perfect narration by Smt Malleshwari, Secretary of SCF. In came the next participant chanting Allah Malik Hai i.e. Sai Baba. Mr Naidu very realistically portrayed Shirdi Sai Baba .

Suddenly a Rajasthani Seth stormed in wanting to know when his client would pay up the money due to him. The gathering sat up and wondered who it was and their wonder was doubled when they learnt that the Sethji was portrayed by a lady! Smt Srivalli ! Next, reminding us of the song' Ayare khilonewala ' by Rafi, in came the balloon vendor with balloons and some toys. If Children were present there, they would have run up to buy some. So true to life in this Fancy dress was Smt Bhagya Chanda.

Page 6: Abhilash july sep 2014

OUR MOTTO - Be Good, Do Good06

Crying out in that well known drawl of a vegetable vendor Sabzi le lo! taaze sabzi le lo ' was Smt Kaushalya, out to make the audience believe that she was truly a vegetable vendor !!She had fresh vegetables with her too! As a grand finale to the Fancy Dress programme was the entry of a very graceful lady from Sikkim looking every bit like a local person of that place; none other than our elegant Nalini Krishnamurthy.

The reverberating applause was proof that the programme was thoroughly enjoyed.

After this was a programme in English. Mrs. Jayanti Menon read out a nice poem she had penned in her inimitable, acrostic style - on SCF (you will find it above - in this issue)

Then she and Indira Narayan enacted a skit titled ' The Coffee Shop' which humourously brought out the choices one is offered in a simple cup of coffee and the complications the choices present. The skit concluded with a twist in the tale.

Then the well known song of yesteryears…”Dear Liza Dear Liza There is a hole in the bucket" was enacted by them . It amused everyone present.

An Annual programme without a dance feature is incomplete. There was the well known Gujarati Folk dance presented by Mrs Pratima Mehta and her group made up by Mrs. Dolar Trivede, Mrs Damayanti, Mrs Malati, Mrs. Latha Mehta and Smt Indumati Patel. The audience was spell bound to see these Senior Citizens twirling and dancing with such grace and energy; enjoying while they were gyrating to the song and music. The credit goes to Mrs Pratima Mehta, who choreographed the dance.

Next came a solo song by Mrs. Beena which was the very popular Bollywood number of the 50's 60's 'Mera naam chinchinchu…' While she danced as she was singing the tapping feet of many in the audience joined her on the stage, thereby making this also a dance number of sorts.

A very heart warming feature of the SCF Annual Day Celebrations is the Honouring of their Octogenarians. We had 7 of our octogenarians being felicitated. They were Mr. Ramanand, Mr Janaki Raman, Mr.Poonavala S, Lt Col. M S Narayana, Lt. Col. Prakash Rao, Mr . Radhakrishan, and Dr. Indumati. Mr.Varun, Mr. Mallesh, Mr. Raja Rao, Dr. Vasundar Reddy did the Honouring.

Mrs. Malleshwari and her team put up an interesting and humorous Telugu Drama about an aspiring Producer ( Malleshwari) looking for talent, specifically the Cast for the movie she wanted to Produce. The response to her advertisement was overwhelming as were the characters who offered to act.

Lt. Col. Prakash Rao, Beena, Mr. Bhaskar Rao, Mr. Ashok, added life and fun to the play, but the impromptu entry and presentation by Smt Chandrakala took the cake!!!

Mr VBGK Murthy popularly known as the Ghantasala of SCF rendered a mellifluous Telugu song, with Mr Laxman supporting him on the Harmonium. Wonderful combination.

An impromptu presentation of a skit by Col & Mrs Moghe was enjoyed by all. An programme without Col. Arun Moghe and Mrs. Mohini Moghe would have made the Celebrations incomplete.

Variety is the spice of life, so the Members of SCF think and next came 'IKARARE MOHABBAT' a Song and Dance sequence performed by couples who, danced, spun around, gyrated to the romantic duos of the yester years way back to K LSaigal's ' Do naina matwale tihare…'. Other numbers were' Mere piya gaye Rangoon, 'Tumne pukara aur ham chale aye' Tere pyar ka aasara chahata hoon.

Mrs & Mrs Mehta. Mr &Mrs, Ramanand, Mr and Mrs Trivede, Mr & Mrs Karmakar,Mr.& Mrs Patel, Wg Cdr Bhushan and wife Surekha enthralled the audience who got swaying with the performers. The icing on the cake was the spontaneous entry of Dr. Hatti with Kamakshi joining him happily. Both were in their element and presented a very happy picture of togetherness. Catching the dancing infection were Mrs Sarojini and Mr Narashiman, who came up stage and danced gracefully as befitted their age. We pray that God bless these dancing couples with a long life of togetherness. Latha Mitta, Smt Saroj enlivened these dances with their songs.

Page 7: Abhilash july sep 2014

OUR MOTTO - Be Good, Do Good 07

A lively 'dil ko choo dene vali ' commentary was given by Mrs. Kamakshi Hatti for this song and dance sequence.

Last but not the least was a Tableau on the various emotions man faces in his daily life. Anger, pride, jealously, greed, lust, sadness love & happiness and peace were finely and sensitively emoted by Indira, Srivalli, Veena & Subhadra, Kaushalya, Gertude, IVLN Chary, Wg Cdr Bhushan and wife Surekha, and Nalini Krishnamurthy. Kamakshi introduced each emotion with clarity and verve and one could make no mistake in identifying these. The message was Love and kindness can throw aside all negative emotions to culminate in peace.

Mr Bagade entertained the audience with his Shairi and songs.

Dr. Vasundar Reddy and Mr. Nityanand were requested to come to the dais to hand over the Tokens of Appreciation to the EC members, Editorial Team and all the Participants.

Lunch was announced .

Mrs. Malleswari rendered the Vote of Thanks taking care to thank everyone who planned, executed and participated in the day's events not forgetting to thank the Hotel Management for their arrangements and prompt service.

The floor was let open to all who wanted to present something - song, poetry jokes etc.

Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous and tasty lunch that was so carefully chosen by Mrs. Aruna and Mrs. Kamakshi.

The MC'S for the programme were Mrs. Aruna and Indira Narayan . Mrs. Aruna had the gathering all ears with her announcements and anecdotes . She motivated the audience to get on to the floor for the song ' Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu..'

To put it in a nutshell, the SCF 21st Annual Day Celebrations was well organized, well attended and very well enjoyed by all.

Donation from SSS

SSS Foundation is a registered Trust founded by Justice TNC Rangarajan. The trustees are Dr P Vyasamoorthy, Sri VK Narasimhan, Sri IVLN Chary, Sri K Sivaram and Sri N Rajendra Rao. An Executive wing of the Trust is the "Society for Serving Seniors" popularly known as SSS. After initially being very active in formative years (with a lending library, regular lectures, computer classes, etc), the activities tapered off as active Members moved away for various reasons such as health, migration etc. Both SSS and SSS Foundation decided to wind up recently last month. In keeping with procedure for winding up in their Bye-laws and Constitution, SSS has chosen 1) Senior Citizens Forum Secunderabad and 2) Association of Senior Citizens of Hyderabad to be the beneficiaries of balance of amount left over at the time of closure. Accordingly, they have donated a sum of Rs 93400.00 to each of these SCAs. The cheque of donation, along with a letter was handed over to Smt Kamakshi on 15th September 2014 by Justice Rangarajan and Sri IVLN Chary. This donation was received with great applause.

Sri N Rajendra Rao, on the spot, on the same day offered to give a personal donation of Rs 6600.00 so that the total amount would be a round figure of Rupees One Lakh. This was also received with great enthusiasm and gratitude by all Members. The donors have suggested that the donation be preserved in a Fixed Deposit and the Annual Interest used for supplementing Education fund every year. Smt Kamakshi assured that this will be done.

No one can fail to notice that all the trustees mentioned above are also long standing members of SCF. Ms Jayanti Menon, SCF member, has also been a member of MC in SSS since inception. Therefore, it pays to have our Members spread out in other SCAs.
