Turbine Oil and its uses
It is a high quality, straight mineral oil with good water separating qualities.
Turbine oils have many other uses as high quality lubricants. Some manufacturers recommend turbine oils or turbine grade oils for
such varied applications as hydraulic oils, air compressor and vacuum pump oils, general shop lubricants, bearing lubricants, heat transfer oils, etc.
One of the areas where turbine oils should be used is in the replacement of rock drill or air tool lubricants for in plant pneumatic applications.

Impurities in Turbine Oil
Turbine Oil has the following type of impurities: Solid impurities, Moisture, Gases dissolved.
Advantages from Filtration
If oil is kept clean and “dry” the optimal conditions for the oil additives are created and “the benefits are clear”.

TURBINE LUBRICATION More than 100 tons of steel, rotating at
3600 rpm, is supported by plain bearings on a cushion of oil that is thinner than a human hair.
Lost revenue at seasonal peaks can be huge around 3 crore per day for a 200 MW plant.
Poor selection and maintenance of turbine oil can result in generation losses.
The presence of water in oil may promote oxidation, corrosion, sludge formation, foaming, additive depletion, and will generally reduce an oil’s effectiveness.
Solid contaminants such as dirt or dust and wear particles may also be present.
These solid particles may increase wear, promote sludge formation and foaming, and restrict oil flow within the system.
TURBINE LUBRICATION CONTAMINANTS AND PROBLEMS
To remove contaminants from the oil, it must be periodically purified.
The frequency of purification can be based on the results of the oil testing program or testing simply can be performed periodically.
Keep Your Oil Dry — Water contamination is the second most destructive contaminant in lubricating oil and should be kept at a minimum for the sake of bearing life/longevity.
Water contamination not only displaces the oil film (in cases of extreme contamination), but also causes sub-surface micro-cracking .
Maintaining minimum water levels is a must. The most common methods of continuous water removal are centrifugal purification and vacuum dehydration.
If water content in the oil is reduced from 100 PPM to 10 PPM the bearing life is increased 2.5 times.
If water content increases from 100 PPM to 200 PPM the bearing life reduces by 2.5 times
