Drill sergeants should soon have less administrative work on their hands, with 216 lieutenants to take on some of their duties as Basic Combat Training platoon leaders.
“Essentially you’re going to balance out what has not been in balance here,” said Brig. Gen. Milford H. “Beags” Beagle Jr., Fort LG!
Right now, drill sergeants on-post have ex-tra administrative work, day-to-day training management and logistical tasks that these lieutenants will assume to “take some of that burden off,” Beagle added.
These tasks “take a lot of time for drill ser-geants to do,” said Michael Ryan, Fort Jackson’s long-range planner.
“The intent is to free up the drill sergeants” so they can train their Soldiers better, because “that’s the most important thing,” Ryan said.
The platoon leaders will each lead, train, and assist with main-taining and enhancing the morale, welfare and readiness of four drill $ ! 7 -ing members of their platoons.
“You’re transforming civilians into Soldiers,” Beagle said. “Lead by example.”
Soldiers learn by watching, he said, and they will model lieuten-ants’ behavior.
Beagle advised the classmates to avoid feelings of cynicism, pes-simism and skepticism and keep upbeat to make sure they are putting the right attitude on display.
Lieutenants will be shipping in from across the country and overseas to take on these positions.
“It’s a mixture of leaders coming,” said != L course.
Many will be switching from operational, 7 L training-related assignment.

National Guard Service Member and Family Care Marchant Center, speaks to leaders of the Columbia community during the Leadership Columbia tour April 9. The tour showcased Fort Jackson’s mission and ways the installation supports the Columbia economy. Parsons was part of a panel of military speakers who answered questions tour members had about the daily life of Soldiers, training missions and their quality of life. Fort Jackson is recognizing volun-teers’ extraordinary service and support this week as part of National Volunteer Week to highlight the volunteers’ con-tributions and accomplishments. The post will honor and recognize volun-teers at the volunteer awards ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday at the NCO Club.
The ceremony will include the 1st and 2nd Quarter Commanding General Helping Hand award, the Volunteer of the Year award and the Volunteer Hall of Fame award. The Fort Jackson com-munity is invited to attend and support our outstanding volunteers.
Volunteers include Soldiers, Fam-ily members, veterans and civilians who donate time to the Fort Jackson community. More than 2,272 indi-vidual volunteers contributed more than 25,000 volunteer hours to the +

The Days of Remembrance, estab-lished by the U.S. Congress, are national dates set aside to commemorate those im-pacted by the Holocaust.
“History teaches us that genocide can be prevented if enough people care enough to act,” Bailey said. “Our choices in response to hatred truly do matter, and ‘Never again.’”
Remembering those lost “as human beings, as individuals who have a life story, who had a history,” is important to keeping their memories alive, Bailey added.
Among the estimated 18 million killed were prisoners of war, people with dis-
abilities, Jehovah’s Witnesses, criminals and homosexuals, but Jews were treated differently than the rest, Beresniova said.
“The Jews were the only group in all of Europe during the war for whom Hitler and the Nazis diverted necessary wartime > -ed. “Jews were not targeted as a religious group. They were targeted as a race.”
While people can adopt a new language, culture or set of beliefs, “the one thing that people cannot change is their genetics,” and Adolf Hitler fed on that idea, she said. “Racializing Jews, even though they do not the path to ‘othering’ them.”
Through advancing a “shared respect for human rights ... we can combat intoler-ance,” said Lt. Col. Jason Finch, command-er of Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army Training Center, “including all forms of bigotry and discrimination,” and prevent history from repeating itself.

As DCO, McLamb worked closely with the Midlands community virtually every day.
“I think we’ve got a great cooperation between Fort Jackson and the city of Columbia, Richland County and re-ally the whole Midlands region – it’s probably the closest relationship I’ve seen at a military installation,” he said.
Members of the Midlands community who worked with him over the years characterized him as a “true champion” and a “force” for Fort Jackson.
“He has been just a true champion for Fort Jackson and their mission,” said Susan McPherson, Director of Public Policy and Military Affairs with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. “He has just been amazing on all fronts. We are going to miss him and his wife.”
McLamb “is a force working with forces, leading the forces and force behind the forces,” said Joanie Thresher, senior director of the USO South Carolina. “We have been honored over the years to work with him.”

Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, the Adjutant General for South Carolina, announced the next deputy adjutant general for the South Carolina Military Department, April 2.
Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Jones, a current resident of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, will assume the role April 17. He will be leaving the role of the assistant adju-tant general-Army.
“Brigadier General Jeff Jones is an exceptional and proven leader in both the South Carolina National Guard, as well as in the community, and I am proud to announce him as the next deputy adjutant general for the South Car-olina Military Department,” McCarty said.
Jones is a 1987 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. He previously served as the commander for the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in Charles-ton and commanded the lead element for the coastal re-sponse of the South Carolina National Guard to the his-< G$I; ? / G$I! ? G$$ I7IK+O 2 3+ deputy commander for the Multi-National Battle Group- G$IG7G$I#!

The class kicking off lieutenant in-tegration, the BCT Platoon Leader In-tegration Course, will be held monthly. It is a two-day session that will serve as a “macro overview” of the new assign-ment, Ryan explained.
Subjects like Soldier fueling, risk management and injury prevention are covered by the curriculum.
The monthly seminar will be imme-diately followed by the post newcomer’s brief since many of these soon-to-be +Jackson, Ryan added.
After the brief, lieutenants will take on battalion and company-level training as they tackle their new roles on-post.
The initiative is also aimed at being able to “gather more supervision within the platoons,” Elizabeth said.
“More eyes on the ground” will hopefully keep Soldiers on their best behavior, potentially improving how the installation runs as a whole, Elizabeth said.
“It’s not about likership; it’s about leadership,” Beagle said, commenting that it is the lieutenants’ job to stem any inappropriate behaviors they witness.

World Class Athlete Program recruits through love of sportBy BRITTANY NELSONArmy News Service
The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Pro-gram has helped multiple athletes achieve in-ternational and Olympic sport dreams while creating and furthering their Army careers.
WCAP is a program through which top ranked Soldier-athletes train to compete at the international level while serving in the U.S. Army with the goal of making it to the Olym-pic or Paralympic games.
The winter sliding sports, bobsled, skel-eton and luge, have seen success within the WCAP program.
Sgt. Shauna Rohbock, a previous WCAP athlete and now a bobsled coach, joined the Army shortly after she started competing in the sport.
“When I started bobsledding, I met a few athletes that were in the program and they said, ‘If you plan on sledding for a long amount of time, you should look into this pro-gram,’ and I did. It was the best thing I ever did,” Rohbock said.
Rohbock, an Olympic silver medalist, said that being a Soldier and an athlete go hand-in-hand.
“They both require mental and physical toughness as well as resiliency. Being an ath-lete makes you a better Soldier and being a Soldier makes you a better athlete,” Rohbock said.
Recruiting is also a big part of the WCAP program. The Soldier-athletes regularly part-ner with Total Army Involvement Recruiting by visiting schools and talking to students about WCAP and the Army.
“I would say WCAP is a great recruiting tool for the Army because it enables us to send athletes out into a military or civilian set-ting and show that the Army is multifaceted,” said Olympic athlete Cpt. Mike Kohn, former bobsled athlete and now coach.
Sgt. Justin Olsen, a WCAP bobsledder, says Kohn is the reason he joined the pro-gram.
N/ -
ing center was Mike Kohn, who was a mem-ber of the National Guard and WCAP,” Olsen said. “I asked Kohn why he had a uniform in his closet and he told me he is a member of this incredible program, WCAP. I asked him about a thousand questions. When I asked me he said ‘absolutely.’ He was my biggest advocate.”
Olsen, an Olympic gold medalist, has won
: in two Winter Olympic Games since joining WCAP.
Olsen says he is glad he is a Soldier-ath-lete because he can work on both his bobsled-ding and military career.
“I’ve been able to work toward my career in the Army, better my leadership skills and look forward to something in the future for a career. If I had to stop bobsled today I don’t have any fear for what’s next,” Olsen said.
U.S.A. bobsled team member Lake Kwaza -an for Elana Meyers Taylor at the Lake Plac-id Bobsled World Cup. Kwaza heard about WCAP through Kohn.
“When I got to Lake Placid, I saw WCAP Soldiers and Cpt. Kohn talked to me. I thought it would be a great opportunity to serve my country in a different way. It seems like the next step for me career wise,” Kwaza said.
Kwaza has two brothers in the military and considered joining after high school but @-sity of Iowa instead.
“I plan on making a career out of the mili-tary so once bobsled is done I plan on con-tinuing with the military. I feel like WCAP is the perfect set-up, I am able to do what I love and then the transition will be that much easier,” Kwaza said.
WCAP continually helps Soldier-athletes with their athletic and military careers so they have the capability to give back to the U.S. Army and always support the mission.
