INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY COMBINED WITH UNIQUE DESIGN

Founded in 1994, ABES focused on the design of urban furniture

and elements for public space since 1999.

ABES' extraordinary, patented 3p-Technology system was

developed with the customer‘s needs in mind. This advanced

technology allows easy, time-saving and low-cost repair of

public furniture. The main idea is to connect bollards with

a junction piece having a predetermined breaking point. If

damaged, object and foundation stay intact, and only the

junction piece has to be replaced on site.

ABES offers unique products with an individual character. They

attract attention, inspire people, and encourage viewers to

engage in a variety of opinions and discussions, which creates

their uniqueness. This has been confirmed by the “Design Centre

North Rhine-Westphalia” by giving the red dot award to the

Signum I bike stand and the Metropol bollard, which are built

using 3p-Technology. We use a variety of first-class materials

for ABES products.

Apart from galvanised or stainless steel and selected woods,

ABES is increasingly using cast iron or cast aluminium. These

materials, which have been somewhat forgotten, have special

characteristics so that regular welding techniques cannot be

used for them.

Last but not least, cast technology is extraordinarily environ-

mentally friendly because 95 % of the materials originate from

recycled resources, and the products themselves can be almost

completely recycled. When choosing these raw materials, you

are helping our environment by saving scarce resources and

avoiding waste production.

WHAT IS THE ABES 3P-TECHNOLOGY?

1 | FOR BOLLARDS: SYSTEMATIC REPAIRS

The patented 3p-Technology revolves around the junction piece with a predetermined breaking point. If a bollard with

3p-Technology suffers an impact, the junction piece gives way

without damaging the bollard or the foundation, which would be

the case for fixed mountings. All parts including the foundation and paving remain undamaged, except for minor scratches on the bollard.

The bollard can be immediately resurrected by simply fitting a new

junction piece on site. The 3p-Technology helps to lower the costs

of maintenance, and also allows vast freedom of design since the

bollards can be removed depending on the system.

2 | FOR BENCHES & WASTE CONTAINERS: FLEXIBILITY AND EASY ASSEMBLY

The 3p-Technology originally developed for bollards has been

adapted to some bench systems and waste containers, thereby

making assembly and maintenance significantly easier.

With 3p-Technology, any of the products can be quickly and

easily assembled and dismantled.

ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF 3P-TECHNOLOGY

3P-HIGH

For many bollard models, the 3p-Technology aperture can be moved

further upwards. This way it is possible to open and close the locking

mechanism with long fire brigade triangular keys without offsets.

This version requires an extended junction piece.

At small diameters the clamping bolts may protrude slightly. In case

of doubts, please contact us.

3P-FLEX

When pressure is applied on the bollards, the steel springs on the

junction piece yields up to 8 - 10°, preventing damage to the bollard,

the foundation and the pavement. If the pressure is reduced, the

bollard returns to its original position.

· Bollard returns to its original position after impact (8 –10° flexure). When the breaking load is exceeded, the predetermined breaking point yields.

· Junction piece needs to be replaced even less frequently

· Additional costs for the junction piece amortize in short-term

· Vehicle damage is reduced by the bollard’s flexible yielding

The junction piece yields, the bollard falls over and is held to the ground shell by an anchor. The bollard itself, the ground shell and the foundations do not show any visible signs of damage (see figure 3).

The bollard is mounted with a new junction piece within 3 minutes (see figure 4 and figure 5). After repair the bollard is firmly fixed in place.

BARRIER POSTS or BOLLARDS are natural parts of our cityscapes. Elegant boundaries or driveway and walkway markings are just a few of their many applicabilities. The various ABES designs, ranging from classic to modern, allow the harmonic integration of bollards in any environment.

These objects are permanently exposed to the risk of being knocked over by cars pulling in and out of parking bays. To counteract this risk, ABES has developed the 3p-Technology for bollard fastening as an alternative to fixed mounting. This is an easy and low-cost way to replace damaged bollards.

LED – BLAZING ROLE MODELS

The lighting bollards Routiero LED and Protector LED are setting an example in matters of

energy consumption. With a power consumption of < 3 watts per hour, they significantly

reduce the urban electricity costs compared to conventional light sources. The low voltage

not only contributes to reduction in costs, but also minimizes the risk of electric shock in

case of complete damage.

However, this will only occur in the extreme only case as illuminated bollards with

3p-Technology can optionally be provided with a 3p-Flex junction piece, that returns

the bollard to its original position after impact.

INTERNAL VALUE

What at first glance looks like a normal bollard reveals its

true benefit on closer inspection: a bollard with integrated

ashtray. Its simple shape makes it particularly suitable

for places often used for cigarette breaks, where waste

containers have not been installed, e.g. for aesthetic

reasons. It also fulfills its function as a bollard.

The 3p-Technology design also offers particular advantages.

Since PARK BENCHES are meant to invite passers-by to rest and relax, they should be comfortable. Located in public parks or squares they add to the urban space with their aesthetic appearance. In public places, the bench is not only a resting place or viewpoint: Meeting others, communicating with people of different ages, strangers before, symbolise the function of the bench in the urban context.

ABES BICYCLE STANDS are characterised by functionality and modern design, provide a firm grip and prevent the bikes from falling over, or having their wheels bent. The stands also allow bikes to be locked up securely, thereby protecting them from theft. The shape and function of the SIGNUM I bicycle stand was given the “red dot” award by the NRW Design Centre for its high design quality.

The bicycle stands offer a wide variety of setup combinations, allowing different sized groups of stands to be combined. Their sophisticated design makes the various stands attractive objects in the urban setting. The tube constructions can by fitted with a curved cover, making it harder for the bikes to roll away, which allows them to be parked without risk to other road users.

Specifications

Two bent U-shaped frames made from steel tubes and welded onto a steel sheet, opening out frontwards and used to hold a bicycle tyre. Cylindrical bollard can be added with or without 3p-Technology.

Mounting

Removable with 3p-Technology, consisting of a ground shell, a junction piece with integrated breaking point, two clamping cones, a hex head bolt and a lock nut.

PLANTERS

Shrubs, small trees and other plants can be planted in the “somewhat different interpretation of a plant pot”. They are available in different sizes to meet as many spatial conditions as possible.

TREE GUARDS

ABES has developed extremely solid but tasteful barriers and tree guards to protect trees and flower beds. The barriers are available in two versions: one for permanent and one for removable installation. The height of the barriers can be customised so that the objects can adapt to the respective environment.

THE MOBILE FLOOD-PREVENTION SYSTEM

Fierce storms and heavy rain are becoming increasingly common,

resulting in millions of euros of material damage. It is to be feared

that climate change will cause more and more extreme weather

events.

HWS-mobil! is a mobile flood-prevention system developed as part

of a research project in co-operation with the Water Management

and Environmental Research Institute (fwu) at the University of

Siegen. Working in an opposite way to a barrage, the baffle plates

curve “away from the water” and are exposed to pressure by the

rising flood waters. As sheet steel absorbs tractive forces very well,

the protective walls, which are “just” 1 millimetres thick, provide

reliable protection for damming heights of up to 1.5 metres.

HWS-mobil! is easy to transport, assemble/disassemble, to clean

and to store. Only two seals are required to minimise the number

of unsealed areas: One on the underside of the baffle plate, and

another vertical seal per support.

The system is designed as protection for buildings/objects (doors,

gates, driveways) as well as linear protection (company premises,

dyke raising etc.). It also offers the unique option of mounting

municipal furniture items onto the ground shells.

Ground shells are permanently embedded into concrete to hold

the supports, while a similar permanently embedded wall profile

has been developed for wall connections. Wall modules, support

modules, slide-in modules and baffle plates are components which

are only mounted in the event of a flood. Using the tried and tested

ABES 3p-Technology, the support modules are friction-fit into the

ground shells in just a few minutes. Affixing the wall modules to

the wall profiles is just as easy.

The baffle plates are edged on the side and are inserted into the

holders of the wall and support modules. Finally, the slide-in

modules, with integrated vertical seal, are slid in from the top. The

system is sealed by screwing in the slide-in modules.

A support protection module is available as an option, and is

generally recommended for damming heights of 0.70 metres

onwards. It only takes about one minute to assemble.

Erecting HWS-mobil! takes a fraction of the time required to setup

a sandbag barrier. Two people can set up 100 running metres of

flood protection in six to eight hours. Many more assistants are

needed to erect and dismantle sandbag barriers.

It is also important to note that, unlike sandbag barriers, there is no

question of expensive decontamination after a flood, just a simple

cleaning of the individual elements.

Detailed installation instructions ensure fast, simple assembly.
