International Ceramics Festival Fri 1 - Sun 3 July / Gwener 1 - Sul 3 Gorffennaf Honorary President: Henry Sandon Weekend Tickets: £125 / South & North Wales Potters £115 / Students £85 Day Tickets: Saturday £75 / Sunday £65

It offers teachers, students, ceramic artists, collectors, working potters and amateurs the chance to meet and study the work of distinguished, internationally known potters and ceramicists from Wales, the UK and around the World.

The Festival attracts about 1000 people who attend lectures, watch practical demonstrations and visit our special exhibitions over three days. Our international demonstrators show skills and techniques on our specially adapted stage and also have their own workspaces - enabling personal discussion about their work. The focus is both practical and inspirational - kilns are built, pots are made and fired.

The trade stalls and exhibitions are open to the general public throughout the weekend, so everyone is welcome!

Mae’n cynnig i athrawon, myfyrwyr, artistiaid serameg, casglwyr, crochenwyr proffesiynol ac amaturiaid y cyfle i gyfarfod â chrochenwyr a seramegyddion uchel eu bri o Gymru, y DU a phob rhan o’r byd.

Mae’r wyl yn denu tua 1000 o bobl sy’n mynychu darlithoedd, yn gwylio dangosiadau ymarferol ac yn ymweld ag arddangosfeydd arbennig dros gyfnod o dri diwrnod. Mae’n gwesteion rhyngwladol yn arddangos eu sgiliau a’u technegau ar lwyfan a godir yn arbennig ac hefyd mae ganddynt eu gofod eu hunain sy’n caniatau trafodaeth bersonol am eu gwaith. Mae’r ffocws yn ysbrydoledig ac yn ymarferol.

Mae’r stondinau a’r arddangosfeydd ar agor i’r cyhoedd yn gyffredinol gydol y penwythnos, felly mae croeso i bawb!

Since the ICF began in 1987 this amazing festival has grown to become the UK’s leading ceramics event. Ers yr Ŵyl Serameg Ryngwladol gyntaf ym 1987 mae’r ŵyl anhygoel hon wedi mynd o nerth i nerth ac erbyn hyn dyma ddigwyddiad serameg mwyaf blaenllaw’r DU.

illyria

twelfth night

by William Shakespeare

Following a shipwreck, Viola is washed ashore in Illyria, a country where everything is illogical, delirious, and completely topsy turvy. It could all end in tears - even if most of them are of laughter. Illyria presents an evening of romance, music and sheer and utter joy, performed on a stage inspired by those of the mediaeval touring troupes.

Mae cwmni Illyria yn cyflwyno noson o ramant, cerddoriaeth a phleser llwyr, yn perfformio ar lwyfan a ysbrydolwyd gan y rhai a ddefnyddwyd gan y trwpiau actio canoloesol. Mae’r cwmni wedi ennill 4 gwobr ryngwladol am berfformio gwaith Shakespeare. Dyma nhw bellach yn eu hugeinfed flwyddyn.

live soundtracK performance: the last man on earth

May 2011 is the centennial of screen legend Vincent Price and to help mark the occasion, DJ group Animat are going to be performing a special live soundtrack set to this classic Vincent Price science-fiction. Electronic, ambient and wrapped in atmosphere, this new performance score is a fascinating mix of dubby downtempo, sound and re-interpretation, injecting a retro classic with very modern sensibilities.

notes from the edge of the east (12A adv)

60 mins. Directors: Tom Payne and Sam Christie

Poland has undergone significant changes throughout its history and recent, primarily economic, changes under the 'shock therapy' doctrine have had a dramatic impact.

Notes from the Edge of the East follows Karl Naylor, a British teacher living in Krakow, as he shows why he feels the identity of Krakow is being eroded by property development and irresponsible tourism. The catch is that Karl isn't Polish and has other outside factors that affect his ability to live comfortably in a country negotiating change.

outdoors

Directors Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi, Daniel Wetzel, Rimini Protokoll

National Theatre Wales has joined forces with Berlin’s pioneering reality theatre-makers Rimini Protokoll to create their first UK commission – in Aberystwyth.

For ‘Outdoors’ two groups and two traditions are taken apart and set together in a new order: the group of a local choir with its powerful tradition of joining the same lines and taking breath in the same millisecond and the audience group: people all coming to the same place at the same time and looking in the same direction without talking. What happens if both parties are split up into individuals who start whispering, follow traces to the backdoor and meet ‘Outdoors’ virtually or personally?

Multi-award-winning Rimini Protokoll is based in Berlin and is recognised as one of the leaders and creators of the theatre movement known as 'Reality Trend'. Each project begins with real people in a specific place, and is then developed through an intense exploratory process.

Performed once a week for a year, Outdoors premiered in February 2011. Audiences will assemble at a central location in Aberystwyth and be taken on a singular journey with a joyful collective finale.

Mae National Theatre Wales yn ymuno â theatr realiti arloesol o Berlin sef Rimini Protokoll i greu eu comisiwn cyntaf yn y DU - yn Aberystwyth.

Ar gyfer ‘Outdoors’ mae dau grwˆp a dau draddodiad yn cael eu gwahanu ac wedyn eu gosod yn ôl at ei gilydd mewn trefn newydd: y ddau grwˆp yw côr lleol gyda’i draddodiad pwerus o gyd-ganu’r un nodau a geiriau ar yr un amser, a’r gynulleidfa sef cannoedd o bobl sy’n dod i’r un lle ar yr un pryd ac yn edrych i’r un cyfeiriad heb siarad. Beth sy’n digwydd os yw’r ddau barti yn cael eu hollti’n unigolion sy’n dechrau sibrwd a dilyn cysgodion?

the new man: four exercises in utopian movements

The New Man is an exercise in ‘active reception’; a performance without actors or stage. There is nothing to see except for the activity of the audience. Dispersed in the theatrical space, all are listening to audio devices that propose gestures and movements. But the audience is not listening to the same things at the same time. It is split up into four groups and for fifteen minutes each group listens to one of the positions, then their programme changes and their role is transferred to another group, while they receive a new position. In the end every group of listeners will have tested and quoted every aspect, gradually gaining insight into what is going on around them.

Dyma ymarfer mewn ‘derbyniad gweithredol’; perfformiad heb actorion ar y llwyfan. ‘Does dim i’w weld ond am beth sy’n digwydd yn y gynulleidfa.

by Ian Rowlands Director Irina Brown Designer Chloe Lamford

“So much can happen in a day... moment leading to moment, and before you know it, there’s a life!”

The journey of a man around Wales. The journey of a soul through the seven ages of man. The journey of a small country towards a coming of age and a better future…

Wryly funny, heartfelt and lyrical, Desire Lines traces the pulls and pushes that lead and drive us through life. How do we decide on a place to call home and if we could live it all again, what would we change?

Yn ddoniol, yn deimladwy ac yn farddonol mae’r perfformiad hwn yn dilyn y dylanwadau sy’n ein harwain a’n gyrru trwy fywyd. Sut ydym yn dewis y lle yr ydym yn galw’n gartref a phe medrwn wneud y cyfan eto, pa beth a wnawn yn wahanol?

Run Jack hare. Run from the hounds that bay at your heels, from the horses, the lords and the working men in tweed suits. Zig zag over the hills towards the safety of the woods and trust that you may yet see the moon rise.

Two stories of the hunting of the hare, from the Welsh woods and the wild Lancashire hills. Stories of deeply rooted traditions and superstitions, of beauty, compassion and redemption. One from the 9th Century, of Melangell, a girl who lived in the woods of the Pennant valley and protected the animals and trees around her, and a another from living memory of a small rufty tufty boy from Pendle Forest who followed in Melangell’s footsteps.

serious money

It’s 1987; Thatcher’s in power, and the City is heading toward financial meltdown.

The economy is growing out of control and the rhythm of the trading pit is changing forever, corruption is rife and making money is the only goal.

Enter a world of finance where packs of traders and brokers make the decisions that shape our lives.

When a trader is found dead, morals are stretched to the limit as everything gets called into question.

Serious Money presents a surreal take on the power of money and the struggle between morals and personal greed.

Directed by Mathilde Lopez, Caryl Churchill’s dark yet poetic piece explores the financial system and our greed, dormant primal instinct and insatiable appetite for wealth.

Mae’r darn tywyll hwn, sydd eto’n farddonol, yn archwilio system cyllidol ein gwlad a’n chwant di-ddiwedd am gyfoeth.

the Blues Band

Paul Jones • Dave Kelly Rob Townsend • Gary Fletcher Tom McGuinness

The Blues Band was formed in 1979, by ex Manfred Mann group members, Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, originally to play a few pub gigs on Paul Jones’ nights off from his then full time career as an actor in London’s West end. The blues had always been their first love, indeed Manfred Mann for a short time backed Sonny Boy Williamson. Tom’s first band - The Roosters - also included a young Eric Clapton. They (Paul & Tom) called on Tom’s old McGuinness Flint friend Hughie flint to play drums. Hughie had of course been the drummer with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers during the classic Clapton era. They next approached the renowned slide guitarist Dave Kelly, who brought in Gary Fletcher to play bass guitar. Hughie retired from the Blues Band late in 1981, and Medicine Head and Family stalwart Rob Townsend joined on drums.

Chris Smith rode his bicycle 16,500 miles from Worcestershire to Beijing. For thirteen months his lungs and legs powered him into headwinds, across deserts and up to mountain passes (and a wonderfully indomitable, reliable and adaptable source of power they proved to be). He set out with neither accomplice, television crew nor satellite navigation.

How does it feel to trade domestic comfort and security for life as a

nomad and to pare one’s life down to the bare necessities? What is it like to push at the frontiers of one’s physical and mental endurance?

Chris speaks about the importance of having a dream - and about how he wore out three sets of tyres, three chains, two pairs of boots, and fell off the bike six times.

we’ll meet again

By Keith Dawson & Gawen Robertson Director - Richard Hull Musical Director - Ric Lloyd Choreographer - Rachel West

Set just before the outbreak of World War 2, We’ll Meet Again follows the exploits of a group of children as they learn new skills at school - donning gas masks, hearing sirens and being instructed in the safety of the air-raid shelters. At the outbreak of War, we see the children at the railway station making their tearful farewells before evacuation. All this takes place during what was known as the (phoney war) - a time when many parents felt that the threat of bombing had been exaggerated, and by early 1940 most of children had returned to their homes. We meet the children back home, bored stiff. But then, as the bombs begin to fall, the decision is made that the children must once more be evacuated to somewhere safe……

confusions

By Alan Ayckbourn

Following their hilarious performances of ‘The Exam’ in February, the Youth Theatre Plus group return with Alan Ayckbourn’s series of interlinking plays dealing with human loneliness and hypocrisy, through comic naturalism to high farce!

In all of the plays within the series, we are invited to laugh at the characters and the situations in which they find themselves. However, we cannot help but think whether we would do the same in that situation. Are we at fault in our relationships with other people as Ayckbourn’s characters are in theirs?

Yn dilyn eu perfformiad hwyliog o ‘The Exam’ ym mis Chwefror, mae aelodau’r Theatr Ieuenctid yn dychwelyd gyda dau gyflwyniad o gyfres o ddramâu cysylltiedig gan Alan Ayckbourn sy’n delio gydag unigrwydd a rhagrith dynolryw.

Music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus Lyrics by Tim Rice Based on an idea by Tim Rice Presented by arrangement with Samuel French Limited

One woman, torn between two World Champion chess players - one Russian, one American. Set at the height of the Cold War, it soon becomes the players are pawns in a much bigger game - far more is at stake than a simple game of chess.

The team behind the record breaking production of ‘Chicago’ in 2010 return to take one of the most exhilarating shows in the musical canon. With a large, professional cast of performers, a live band, and extravagant set and costumes, this promises to be another breathtaking production!

ultimate eagles

Covering the Eagles music is not a thing you attempt half-heartedly. The songs are deceptively complex, particularly the vocal arrangements and more importantly, the songs are revered throughout the world. Ultimate Eagles recreate the music with reverence, excitement and with a new stage show that focuses it’s bright lights on the 1970s, when the Eagles were at their mightiest. You just might find yourself whisked away to the sunny climes of Southern California!

One look at the Ultimate Eagles’ collective experience, musicality and professionalism, and it’s easy to understand the band's simple yet bold mission statement; to play the Eagles’ music better than anybody, anywhere. Second only to the Eagles.

by William Shakespeare

Following a shipwreck, Viola is washed ashore in Illyria, a country where everything is illogical, delirious, and completely topsy turvy. It could all end in tears - even if most of them are of laughter. Illyria presents an evening of romance, music and sheer and utter joy, performed on a stage inspired by those of the mediaeval touring troupes.

Illyria has won 4 international awards for performing Shakespeare. In their 20th year, Illyria turns to one of the greatest of all English comedies.

She came to London with them to tour with the Rolling Stones in the mid-sixties and began her solo career as the first female artist on the Immediate record. Her first single “The First Cut is The Deepest” penned by Cat Stevens is a soul classic as well as the Chip Taylor classic “Angel of the Morning”.

Her unique voice has been produced by some of the most influential artists of our time - Mick Jagger, Andrew Oldham, Mike Hurst, John Paul Jones, Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Barry Gibb, Dexter Wansell, Boy George, Roger Waters and Don Was. “Objects makes the infinite intimate” George Brecht

As part of her residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, artist Clare Thornton plans to create a live activity in the Gallery space. She wants to invite local residents to visit her at work in the Gallery and to bring along an object that says something about them.

She invites you to bring along an everyday item that might be used for work, a hobby, community/neighbourhood group. These objects can be large or small (to fit in a bag or in the boot of a car). Clare would like to place these materials into a 3D landscape, unique to the people and place of Aberystwyth. Each object would be carefully documented, tagged and placed into the sculptural scene for a short period, adding to a constantly shifting map of local objects. It can be collected at the end of the activity.

Each new piece evolves out of conversations and local research - a social process of gathering personal accounts and critical responses to particular objects and thoughts. I then transform this collection of materials to produce bookworks, mixed media installations and live events.”

As part of her residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Clare will create a live activity in the Gallery (see page 31). She invites local residents to visit her at work and to bring along an object that says something about them. These objects can be large or small, something you might use for work or an interest or hobby. Clare will place these objects in the Gallery, creating a 3D ‘landscape’ unique to the people and place of Aberystwyth (all items will be returned).

(If you would like to contribute something to this installation, please bring it along to the Gallery from 27 May or email [email protected] to deliver it earlier)

Mae’r artist Clare Thornton yn ymddiddori mewn casglu straeon ac hynodion; gan greu cerfluniau, darnau tecstil, gwisgoedd a digwyddiadau cymdeithasol byw a ysbrydolir gan y deunyddiau a’r eitemau a gesglir ganddi. Mae’n awyddus i wybod mwy am yr atgofion a’r straeon a gynhwysir o fewn eitemau personol, ac mae’n chwarae gyda deunyddiau bob-dydd i greu gosodweithiau a ‘golygfeydd’ sy’n siarad i’r bobl a’r lleoliadau yn y lle y mae’n digwydd bod. Fel rhan o’i chyfnod preswyl yn y Ganolfan (gweler Tud 31), bydd Clare yn creu gweithgaredd byw yn yr Oriel. Mae hi’n gwahodd trigolion lleol i ymweld â hi yn ei gwaith ac i ddod ag eitem efo nhw sy’n dweud rhywbeth amdanynt. Gall yr eitemau hyn fod yn fawr neu’n fach, rhywbeth yr ydych yn defnyddio yn eich gwaith neu wrth ddilyn diddordeb neu hobi. Bydd Clare yn gosod yr eitemau hyn yn yr Oriel, gan greu ‘tirlun’ 3D a fydd yn unigryw i bobl a thref Aberystwyth (dychwelir yr holl eitemau).

wild thing

This exhibition brings together a lively eclectic selection of contemporary artworks which use animal imagery. The history of visual art is full of animals used as decoration, allegory, symbol; the way in which animals are understood and portrayed has always reflected the society of the time. The works here use different media to reflect our varied and sometimes confused feelings about our co-creatures - including fear, awe at their visual beauty, sentimentality. From Stephanie Quayle’s vigorous ceramic sculptures to Stephen Johnson’s constructed kitsch works; from Georgia Hayes expressionist paintings to Lucy Casson’s imaginative assemblages, this quirky and colourful exhibition reminds us that ultimately artists’ use of animal imagery expresses far more about human beings and the boundaries of our understanding than it does about the creatures portrayed.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre Exhibition

Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn cyflwyno detholiad bywiog ac eclectig o ddarnau celf cyfoes sy’n defynyddio delweddau o anifeiliaid. Mae hanes celf gweledol yn llawn o anifeiliaid a ddefnyddir fel addurniad, alegori, symbol - mae’r ffordd y mae anifeiliaid yn cael eu deall a’u portreadu yn adlewyrchu bob tro cymdeithas y cyfnod. Mae’r darnau a arddangosir yma yn defnyddio gwahanol gyfryngau i adlewyrchu’n teimladau amrywiol ac weithiau cymysglyd tuag at ein cyd-greaduriaid - gan gynnwys ofn, edmygedd o’u prydferthwch gweledol a sentiment. O gerfluniau serameg bywiog Stephanie Quayle i weithiau ‘kitsch’ Stephen Johnson; o baentiadau mynegiadol Georgia Hayes i gyfosodiadau llawn dychymyg Lucy Casson, mae’r arddangosfa fympwyol a lliwgar hon yn ein hatgoffa bod defnydd yr artist o ddelweddau anifeiliaid, yn y pendraw, yn dweud llawer mwy am ddynion a ffiniau ein dealltwriaeth nag ydi am yr anifeiliaid a bortreadir.

Chris Steele-Perkins is a renowned British Magnum photographer, who moved to London from Rangoon with his family in 1949. He started work as a freelance photographer in London in the early 1970s and is well known for his work in countries including Africa, Afghanistan and Japan. For this exhibition he presents a personal view of what makes England truly English: from Sunday cricket matches to intimate family portraits, from Saturday night dancing to race riots. Each picture tells a story of a time and a place and is drawn from the body of work he has created over forty years: “an honest testament to an odd but magnificent country”. Northumbria University

Mae Chris Steele-Perkins yn ffotograffydd Magnum blaenllaw, a symudodd i Lundain o Rangoon gyda’i deulu ym 1949. Dechreuodd waith fel ffotograffydd ar ei liwt ei hun yn Llundain yn y saithdegau cynnar ac mae ganddo enw da mewn gwledydd ledled y byd gan gynnwys Affrica, Afghanistan a Siapan. Yn yr arddangosfa hon mae’n cyflwyno barn bersonol am beth sy’n gwneud Lloegr yr hyn y mae: o gemau criced ar brynhawn dydd Sul i bortreadau teuluol tyner, o ddawnsio ar nos Sadwrn i anghydfod hiliol. Mae pob darlun yn adrodd stori am amser a lleoliad, ac maent yn rhan o gorff o waith a greuwyd dros gyfnod o ddeugain mlynedd: yn ei eiriau ef, dyma deyrnged onest i wlad ryfedd ond gogoneddus. Mae Rowan O’Neill, artist perfformio o orllewin Cymru, yn dangos dau ddarn: Ysbrydolir y cyntaf, A woman came from Catterick yn rhannol gan yr epig Gymreig o’r 6ed ganrif Y Gogoddin; mae’r ail, sef Hwyl Fawr Frank Lloyd Wright yn gofnod o berfformiad a ddatblygwyd ganddi yn Aberteifi ar gyfer dathliadau 900 mlynedd y dref.

relation & participation: approaches to performance

Symposium: Mon 2 - Tues 3 May Ligna Performance (for delegates): Wed 4 May

To book contact 01970 623232 or email [email protected]. This is a free symposium but places are limited so please book in advance.

A two day post-graduate led symposium exploring approaches to participation and relation in performance. The symposium celebrates ‘Outdoors’, the first UK-commissioned performance from Berlin's reality Theatre-makers Rimini Protokoll and of radio-theatre performance artists LIGNA's New Man (a delegates performance will take place Wednesday 4 May at 10am).

With writings from Nicolas Bourriaud, Claire Bishop and Jacques Rancière informing the visual arts and performance studies fields over the past ten years, the terms ‘relational’ and ‘participation’ have become increasingly important in describing both an aesthetics of making and an ethics of spectatorship. Practitioners are also constantly on the search for innovative ways to ‘address’ participants in their work.

People who are not able to attend in person are encouraged to watch and participate online www.relateparticipate.com

Organised by the Department of Theatre Film and TV Studies, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, and National Theatre Wales.

The mix of artists and arts businesses is a unique feature of this development with both new and established occupants interacting together in a stimulating environment to realise their economic and creative potential.

The Creative Units Project designed by Heatherwick Studio, worth £1 million, has been made possible by support from Aberystwyth University, the Arts Council of Wales Lottery Fund and the Welsh Assembly Government.
