Welcome to the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera version of the last seven days of Jesus Christ’s life on earth, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” It focuses on the relationship between Judas and Jesus. I remember a fair amount of controversy when it was first produced in 1971. I always thought of it as another new way to look at the gospels, and what can be bad about that?

ACT looked at producing the show in the past and we’re glad to finally bring it to life on the Capitol Theatre stage. As always, ACT welcomes new talent the Capitol stage. This show has a fair amount of debut performers; they are denoted with an asterisk by their name in the cast list. We welcome every one of them and hope you enjoy their talents, as well as the talents of all the cast and crew for this production. Every few years we take a survey of our audience to determine who they are, what they think of their community theater and what they would like to see in the future, in order to do a better job at bringing you community theater. Please help us this year. We have made it even easier for many of you. Please take a moment to fill out the survey included with your program, or go to AberdeenCommunityTheatre.com on your smart phone and click on the 2018 Season Survey. This survey can be anonymous and then ACT will not track any of the information provided because you filled out this survey. Don’t forget to stop by between live productions and take in a movie at Capitol Cinema. We have a film screening every night in Theatre B at 7p.m. Check out CapitolCinema.com for up-to-date information on what’s showing any night. Once again, thank you for your support. Please use the back page of the program to make a vital contribution to the programs here at ACT. You can designate your funds to the new LED lighting or simply for ongoing expenses in the historic Capitol Theatre. There is another way you can help. Pierson Ford-Lincoln is helping ACT with a “Driven to Give” fund raiser this Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Just stop out at Pierson Ford and test drive a new Lincoln vehicle. ACT will receive $20 for each person test driving a new Lincoln, and an extra $10 if you test drive two, so up to $30 per person will be donated to ACT. Lincoln will donate up to $8000 total, so please help us get as close to that maximum as possible by test driving a new Lincoln this Saturday. If you can’t make it to Pierson Ford-Lincoln, please make a contribution using the back page of your program. We can only do it with your help. Your support is much needed and even more appreciated. Thanks again for coming.

FROM THE ARTISTIC/MANAGING DIRECTOR

The late 60s brought a lot of cultural changes to the world. The most unusual (and controversial) was a public dialogue about the existence of God Himself. Time Magazine lit the fuse with a cover simply entitled, “Is God Dead?” Leave it to artists to be inspired to enter the fray. Two young artists of musical theater wrote their first commercially-produced musicals, challenging

that question. ACT audiences were treated to one of those shows two years ago, “Godspell.” Composer Stephen Schwartz’s delightful retelling of stories from the New Testament became an international hit. He continues to be a major force in musical theater today (ask anyone who’s seen “Wicked”). The other newbie was across the pond, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who along with his lyricist Tim Rice, created a concept album for a yet-to-be produced show, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The recording became an overnight sensation, inspired a stage show and a film and countless returns to Broadway, including a live telecast this past Easter Sunday. This show presents the complex story with a rock beat and a refreshing take on these characters. Webber’s spectacular string of hits continues today, with a return to his rock youth with “School Of Rock.” It’s an unusual and happy coincidence that ACT has produced these two amazing and timeless pieces so close together. The two youthful and musical theater giants were inspired by this story, and I guess we all should be anew.

CRE

WCHRIS ANDERSON (Soldier/Men’s Ensemble) is so excited to be part of this iconic, powerful, faith-inspiring show and to check it off his “bucket list!” He also feels greatly privileged to be performing with such a talented cast. His first ACT show was another religious classic, “Monty Python’s SPAMALOT” (2012). Since then he has been a regular on stage; most recently, “The Addam’s Family” and “Sister Act.” Chris serves as a chaplain at Avera St. Luke’s, hopes you all are impacted positively by this show, and he thanks his wife, Jennifer, and family for continuing to support his acting habit.

JASON BARKMEIER (King Herod) is excited to make his second ACT appearance since moving to Aberdeen in 2016. His last ACT role was Curtis (the bad guy) in last summer’s production of “Sister Act.” Jason is thrilled to, again, share the stage with his lovely wife and sweetheart, Jennifer. Jason and Jennifer have one daughter, Eden, and Jason has three sons: Dylan, Kobe and Lucas who live in Eden Prairie, MN. Jason works for Consolidated Communications as a network operations center technician.

JENNIFER BARKMEIER (Herod Backup/Soul Singer/Women’s Ensemble) was seen last summer as Deloris in ACT’s “Sister Act.” Her acting credits include over fifty productions at ACT, Northern State University, The Theatre in the Round (Minneapolis) and the Guthrie Theatre. Jennifer is a K-8 art and music teacher in Warner, is the mom of soon to be 13-year-old twins, Ava & Jackson and soon-to-be kindergartener, Eden. Jennifer is married to Jason Barkmeier and is thrilled to be enjoying another production with him.

KYLA BEARHEELS (Apostle, Women’s Ensemble) was raised in Aberdeen, before moving to New Zealand where she began studying theater. She has since moved home and is a graduate of both NSU and SDSU. Kyla works at Sanford as a nurse and is a mother to her 10-year-old son, Braden.

MACKINLEY BRUEMMER (Annas) from LaCrosse, Wisconsin, is a student at Northern State University majoring in musical theater. Past roles include: Tony in “Billy Elliot” with LaCrosse Community Theatre, Frollo in NSU’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and Caleb in “The Spitfire Grill,” and Robert in “Boeing, Boeing,” both with the Northern Fort Playhouse.

CURT CAMPBELL (Priest #2/Men’s Ensemble) started in community theatre as a teenager in his hometown of Carthage, MO. Moved to Aberdeen in 2004 and did his first show with ACT in 2005.

JOHN CASSENS (Peter) is a senior vocal/instrumental music major at NSU. He is an aspiring film music conductor and orchestra conductor. He made his ACT debut in 2014 as Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors.” Most recently he led NSU’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

ELI CORBETT (Jesus) After a two-year break from ACT, Eli is thrilled to have received the opportunity to come back and grace the Capitol Theater stage once more. Feel free to come backstage after the show and say hi! Photos are $10… cash only. Eli would like to thank his wonderful family and friends for the constant love and support as he continues to make his dreams a reality.

CHRISTINE CROUCH (Women’s Ensemble) is a girl about to begin the terrors of high school, but will first enjoy her summer of reading in her humble abode and travelling the world between books.

LINDSEY DOSCH (Women’s Ensemble) is 30 years old with one brother, Logan, and three step-sisters, Britni, Lauren and Brooke. She also nine wonderful nieces and nephews, five of which are in town, Elijah, Britney, Gideon, Eden and Keanu. Her parents are Terry, the late Sandy and Jill. She is so blessed to have the support of all her family.

AYSIA EGGENA (Women’s Ensemble) just graduated high school and plans on going and getting her bachelor’s degree in social work. When not on stage, you can find her working at Journey Kids Daycare. Aysia loves acting and you may have seen her as Ursula in “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” She hopes you enjoy this super show and wants to thank you for supporting your community theater.

CAST & C

REWSAMIE ELBERT (Apostle/Leper/Women’s Ensemble) is extremely honored to be joining the cast of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. She’s always been interested in music and theater and participated in shows through middle, high school and community performances in her hometown of Watertown. Samie graduated from NSU and just finished her first year of teaching second grade at Simmons Elementary.

ROBERT FAY (Old Man) Being the same age as Ron Howard – most people do not realize that being Opie was not his first child part; he started in “The Music Man” and so did Robert. Robert’s most recent projects include “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Legally Blonde” and “Mary Poppins.”

CHRISTINA FISCHER (Women’s Ensemble) is delighted to be working with this group of keen performers. She has been in several shows over her years, most recently ACT’s “The Addams Family.” She is a fire-wielding—er, free-lancing—wordsmith. Chris and her kitty cohort are currently content in Redfield.

MICHAEL GAROFALO (Men’s Ensemble/Pilate’s Guard) is once again back on stage at ACT. He is super excited to be in this production which will be his eleventh ACT show. In addition to theater, his activities include tennis, cross country, oral interp and music. He will be a junior at Roncalli High School this year. He most recently appeared as Schroeder in Roncalli High School’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

SHELBY GLOVER (Women’s Ensemble/Soul Singer/Herod Backup) is a junior studying Musical Theatre at Northern State. Past credits include acting as herself in “Sondheim on Sondheim,” Story Teller in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” as well as acting as Assistant Director for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” This will be Shelby’s first performance with ACT and she looks forward to sharing “Jesus Christ Superstar” with you all!

MATTHEW HARMEL (Caiaphas) is thrilled to be back on stage with this gifted cast for ACT’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Matthew was last seen as the Cross-Dressing Wolf in “Shrek, the Musical” in 2015. He and his wife Lori, a fellow ACT veteran, have two children, Gabriel and Jillian.

BRANDON HEIM (Apostle/Men’s Ensemble) is a magician and videographer, loves to swing dance and is back from his first year of college at MSUM. Brandon is excited to be back at ACT for “Jesus Christ Superstar” having previously worked on shows “Sister Act” as Pablo and “Hairspray” as Stooie.

FRED HEMKE (Soldier/Herod Backup) This is Fred’s first time on stage ever (though he did play the Pope, magnificently, at the end of “Sister Act” – staff edit). He finds himself incredibly lucky to be working with so many incredible musicians. He thinks that Mary Marion is doing a great job teaching the cast their voices and music. Fred really hopes you enjoy the show.

RACHEL HEMKE (Women’s Ensemble/Herod Backup/Soul Girl) is excited to be back on stage, especially for one of her favorite shows of all time! She’s sharing the stage with her husband, Fred, and is having fun with him and her other castmates. She is the music coordinator at Good Shepherd Lutheran and mother to Charlotte and Peter.

HALEY HUBBARD (Soul Singer/Herod Backup/Women’s Ensemble) is thrilled to be back in the Hub City after a brief hiatus to Minneapolis. While she was away, she performed in two professional productions. She decided she missed being in ACT shows such as “White Christmas” and “Exit Laughing”, so she exited to get back on the Aberdeen theater scene! Haley’s main passion is theater, but others include cross-stitching, tacos and true crime podcasts.

RICHARD LEWIS (Priest #1) This is Richard’s return to stage aver a multi-decade hiatus. Don’t ask him why he did this because he really doesn’t know. MICHAEL LYTLE (Simon Zealotes) Originally from Rapid City, SD, Michael Lytle is a junior at Northern State University studying vocal music. “Jesus Christ Superstar” is Michael’s debut performance for the Aberdeen Community Theatre. The last time Dave was on the ACT stage was 1985 for the play “Fiddler on the Roof.” He feels rusty but is also very excited to get back “into the ACT. He is also married and has two sons and three grandchildren. He is a retired elementary school counselor.

She enjoys art, horseback riding, reading, dancing, singing, and of course, acting. She has been involved in 11 shows with ACT and Young People’s Theatre over the last eight years.

JOHN SCHWAB (Apostle/Leper/Men’s Ensemble) has waited a bit too long to act again after tech work with “Wit” and “The Little Mermaid, Jr.,” and is thrilled to take the stage once again. John has been acting with YPT for the last half of his life and is excited to act for the rest of his life. He is a junior homeschooling and is studying cinematography.

MICHAEL SKYLES (Pontius Pilate) has performed with many opera companies across the United States including the Lyric Opera Cleveland, Natchez Opera in Mississippi and the Fargo/Moorhead Opera. In recent engagements, Mr. Skyles has performed the roles of Nemorino in Sounds of South Dakota’s production “L’elisir d’amore,” Pong in The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s production of “Turandot”, and Remendado in Fargo Moorhead Opera’s production of “Carmen.” Currently, Mr. Skyles is an Instructor of Music at Northern State University, where he teaches private voice, diction, vocal pedagogy, opera theater, and is the vocal director for musical theater productions.

ELSA SWANSON (Mary Magdalene) Originally from Chaska, MN, Elsa has spent the last four years in Aberdeen studying music education at NSU. KATIE APPL (Conductor) is a recent graduate of NSU in the field of music education. “Jesus Christ Superstar” marks her first role as a pit conductor. She will be moving to Spearfish to teach high school band. Katie is excited for this opportunity to perform in Aberdeen one more time with an amazing cast and pit.

TYLER BECK (Lead Guitar) is a senior at NSU completing his final semester and onto bigger and better things, graduating with a degree in Voice Performance. KATIE MAGERA (Choreographer) is no stranger to the ACT/YPT stage. Katie is a senior at NSU majoring in special education. When she’s not involved in a show, she is traveling and passing on her love of dance to her ballerinas. Thanks to her dance experience from Living Art Dance Studios, she has enjoyed choreographing this show alongside her talented sister, Emily Magera.

EMILY MAGERA (Assist. Choreographer) is excited to be back at her home stage! She recently completed her sophomore year at the University of Sioux Falls where she is majoring in communication studies and theatre with a music minor.
