This year the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Music Festival is 100 years old. Begun in 1909 by Charles Sanford Terry (Professor of History at Aberdeen University) the first Festival included choirs from many of the important local businesses of the time, including Reid and Pearsons and Isaac Benzies, and was attended by Sir Edward Elgar.

The Founder's aim was to encourage music making and participation in musical activities in the North East of Scotland and this continues to be our aim. We cannot do this without your participation and thank you for taking this syllabus.

As you will read in the information on Adjudicators, most of them this year were educated in Aberdeen, took part in the Festival and won the appropriate challenge classes before going on to further study and professional lives as eminent musicians. We thank them for “coming home” to celebrate the Centenary Year with us and we look forward to receiving your entry and to making the 2009 Festival a truly unforgettable experience

ADJUDICATORS

ROBIN HAGGART (Brass)Born in Aberdeen, Robin Haggart began playing the tuba while a pupil at Harlaw Academy. His inspirational teachers during this time were Dr Charles Foster and Edward J Paley. He went on to win the Instrumental Challenge class at the Music Festival before commencing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music.Since 1996 Robin has held the position of Principal Tuba with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, appearing as a soloist on a number of occasions. He has also appeared as a guest player with many orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Berliner Philharmoniker. In addition to his orchestral work, he was for ten years a member of the internationally renowned brass ensemble “The Wallace Collection”, and for the past six years he has been a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, which is made up of leading orchestral players, chamber musicians and soloists from across Europe.Robin Haggart is a tutor of tuba at the Royal Northern College of Music and has also given masterclasses at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

NEIL MACKIE (Vocal)Born in Aberdeen, the tenor Neil Mackie has enjoyed an international career spanning over 40 years. Having competed in the Music Festival for many years he won the Vocal Challege class before taking up a place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music to study the piano. As a post-graduate student he won a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where he studied singing and later a substantial Gulbenkian Fellowship enabled him to study in Munich with the Swiss tenor, Ernst Haefliger. However, the greatest influence on his career was undoubtedly the legendary English tenor, Sir Peter Pears. Neil has sung at most of the major venues throughout the world with many of today’s foremost conductors and orchestras in a wide-ranging repertory. Over the years he has premiered countless works by Scottish composers as well as many notable first performances of Maxwell Davies, Britten, Leighton and Henze.In 1995 Neil Mackie was appointed Head of Vocal Studies at the Royal College of Music in London, and also at the highly successful Benjamin Britten International Opera School. He retired from this role in 2007, but continues to teach in London as well as holding a Professorship at Agder University in Kristiansand, Norway.

MURRAY McLACHLAN (Piano)Murray McLachlan began his education at Ferryhill Primary School and Harlaw Academy. He had piano lessons at an early age with Mary Alexander, and also learnt the guitar and clarinet. His later piano studies were with Robert Howie and he entered the Music Festival many times playing all three instruments. At the age of thirteen Murray won the instrumental challenge class on the guitar! In 1979 he moved to Manchester to become a pupil at Chetham’s School of Music where he was encouraged to study the guitar and clarinet in favour of the piano! However, after competing in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1981, as both a pianist and guitarist, he decided to concentrate on the piano as he was eliminated in the early stages on the guitar. His piano teacher was David Hartigan.Murray McLachlan’s repertoire includes over forty concertos and twenty-five recital programmes and he has appeared as soloist with most of the leading UK orchestras. In addition he has made over forty commercial recordings which have consistently received outstanding reviews. He is Head of

Keyboard at Chetham’s School of Music, a tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and founder/artistic director of the Chetham’s International Summer school and festival for pianists. In 2007 Murray launched the first Manchester International Concerto Competition for Young Pianists, an event which will be re-staged in August 2009 (www.pianoconcertocompetition.com)Murray McLachlan is editor of Piano Professional Magazine, as well as Chair of the European Piano Teachers’ Association (EPTA UK). As well as performing and teaching, he is well known internationally for his numerous articles on piano technique and repertoire. He adjudicated at the Aberdeen Music Festival in 1992.

KATHRYN PAGE (Piano)Kathryn Page has given over twenty recitals at the South Bank and Wigmore Hall, both as soloist and chamber music pianist. She has toured Norway, Italy, Ireland and Australia where she gave recitals at the Sydney Festival and broadcast for ABC. At home Kathryn has preformed at many of the leading music festivals and has given numerous live broadcasts for BBC Radio Three. Her interest in contemporary music has led to several world premieres, including works by Cary Carpenter, Alisdair Nicholson and Djano Bates. She has worked with many established artists including David Campbell, Joana MacGregor and Sting! TV work has ranged from a live recital from Paris on CNN, an appearance on the Korean broadcasting network, several performances on Irish TV and a much treasured Blue Peter badge. In 1991 she recorded the complete set of Mozart-Grieg duo sonatas for BBC Radio Three. Kathryn adjudicated at the Aberdeen Music Festival in 2004.

CLAIRE TELFORD (Strings and Scottish Instrumental)Born in Aberdeen, Claire Telford began studying the violin at the age of eight. She won a scholarship to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Junior Department, and went on to graduate with distinction in Violin and Viola from the Royal College of Music, London, in 2003. Claire was a member of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and Great Britain, and of Camerata Scotland. She works regularly with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has also played with the London Chamber Orchestra and the English Sinfonia. As a guest artist for the National Trust for Scotland, Claire has performed on tours of Russia, the Baltics, Iceland, Greenland, The Arctic, France and Ireland. She has been engaged to play during their forthcoming tour of Norway in 2010.The early part of Claire’s career was based in the north-east of Scotland where, as a dedicated member of the Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society, she championed numerous Traditional Fiddle Festivals, winning the gold medal at the Royal National Mod in 1994 and the prestigious silver medal at the Glenfiddich Fiddle Championships in 1998 (the same year in which she won the instrumental challenge class at the Aberdeen Music Festival).A major highlight of Claire’s career has been performing several times by private invitation of HRH Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl and Countess of Wessex at Windsor Castle and Bagshot Park – and most recently at Buckingham Palace for the 60th birthday celebrations of the HRH Prince of Wales.Claire is currently on the staff of the Violin Department at the Yehudi Menuhin School, where she has worked since 2001 as the assistant teacher to proclaimed violin professor Natalia Boyarsky. She is director of the Yehudi Menuhin School Junior Orchestra and, in 2007, produced and released her debut CD, Ceol Dee.

IAN WILSON (Recorder and Woodwind)Ian Wilson was born in Aberdeenshire and prior to studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he was a scholarship student at the North East of Scotland Music School. Whilst at the GSMD Ian studied recorders and clarinet and won the woodwind prize twice (once on each instrument). He was also awarded the Principal’s Prize and graduated with a first class honours degree. A keen chamber musician, Ian is a member of the Burney Players and also plays with the recorder quartet the Flautadors. He has performed as a soloist with many of Europe’s finest orchestras and the British contemporary music specialists Kokoro. Ian has also featured as a soloist in many international festivals in Europe, including the Auvergne and Innsbruck Early Music Festivals, the Ancient Niasvizh Festival in Belarus and the BBC Proms. His recording of Vivaldi, Teleman and Sammartini recorder concertos was released in the autumn of 2008. Outside classical music, Ian can

be heard on the latest albums by the band Paris Motel and he has recently been working with the cult folk singer Vashti Bunyan.In addition to his performing work, Ian is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and at Trinity College of Music, London. He also teaches at Eton College and has given many masterclasses both in the UK and abroad. He is in demand as an examiner and adjudicator. In 2005 he was one of the judges of the Moeck International Recorder Prize and he has recently compiled the recorder diploma syllabus for the TrinityGuildhall examination service. Ian is delighted to be returning to his home town of Aberdeen to work at the 2009 Festival, where he previously adjudicated in 2000.

STEWARDS:

COULD YOU SPARE TWO or THREE HOURS DURING FESTIVAL WEEK?

It is always difficult to find a large enough number of people to act as stewards to help to run the Festival efficiently. Inadequate stewarding leads to chaos of all kinds, especially in sections of the Festival attracting large groups of competitors, e.g. choirs, instrumental ensembles, orchestras etc. Adequate stewarding is therefore essential to the smooth running of the Festival and although it is unpaid, volunteers can be assured that they are making a vital contribution to the organisation of the week. We therefore appeal to anyone who has a few hours to spare during Festival week to consider giving their names to the Secretary.

There are four categories of duties:1. CASH STEWARD – Taking entrance money and making sure people do not

enter the hall during a performance.2. COMPETITORS’ STEWARD - Checking that competitors are present, and

putting the numbers on the competitors’ board. (This steward is also in charge of making tea/coffee for adjudicators and officials).

3. ADJUDICATOR’S ASSISTANT - Assisting at adjudicator’s desk with music, adjudication sheets and certificates

4. CROWD CONTROL STEWARD - Ensuring that competitors in ensemble classes enter and leave halls in an orderly fashion, know where they should be seated and when they are competing.

FESTIVAL RULES

A. Entries

1. Please use the entry form for the current year . These may be photocopied – same size as the original pleaseUse a separate form for each entry.Competitors in ensemble classes of between 2 and 8 participants should state their own

names on the entry form in addition to any group name.Enclose correct entry fee and copies of pieces where required - see rule B.2

CASH SHOULD NOT BE SENT. Cheques and postal orders should be crossed and made payable to “Aberdeen and NE Music Festival”. For multiple entries, a single cheque

should be used where possible.NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTEDPlease be aware of the NEW POSTAL CHARGES. Rates now vary depending on the size

and thickness of the envelope. This is particularly important if you are sending a large batch of entries and/or music for accompanists. Please check at your Post Office to make sure that you use the correct amount in stamps.

In the event of any section being oversubscribed, entries will be accepted in order of receiptALL ENTRIES WILL BE ACKNOWLEDGED AFTER THE CLOSING DATE The Festival will send out ballot slips approximately three weeks before the start of the

Festival.Any other correspondence requiring a reply should be accompanied by a stamped

addressed envelope.

2. The operative date for reckoning ages is the last day of February preceding the Festival.

3. The Council reserves the right to:(a) refuse any proposed entry(b) subdivide classes where the number or type of classes makes this desirable(c) cancel any class where the number of entries received makes the running of the class

unviable(d) appoint replacement or additional adjudicators and accompanists, and alter, modify or

cancel any of the arrangements detailed in this syllabus.

4. When the entry list is closed, the Council will decide the day and order of the classes, and will conduct a ballot for the order of performing, but reserves the right to make alterations to the order shown in the official programme. Performers not present by the time of the completion of their classes may be heard if time is available, but will not be eligible for any award or placing.

5. Entries may be made in more than one class where the syllabus does not state otherwise, but in ordinary solo classes for any one instrument, entry may be made in not more than two classes, and these must be adjacent age groups. Open classes are considered adjacent to the top age group. (For the purposes of this rule, the different sizes of recorder are regarded as separate instruments).

6. No person will be allowed to take part more than once in any one class, except in a duet or ensemble class, where a second entry is permitted provided that a different part is performed with a different instrument. (For this rule the Recorder is classed as one instrument). This rule does not apply to conductors.

7. NON-COMPETITIVE ENTRIES - It is possible for any entry in any class to be made on a non-competitive basis. Non-competitive entrants will receive an adjudication only. Anyone wishing to enter on this basis should mark their entry form clearly across the top with “Non-competitive entry”.

B. Test and Own Choice Pieces

1. (a) Except where otherwise stated, the prescribed editions of music must be used in all performances, and, except in Scots Song, Hebridean Song and Junior Vocal classes, the prescribed key must be used. (b) Copies of all set pieces are provided by the Festival for adjudicators and official accompanists. Where transposition is required, a transposed copy for the accompanist must be sent WITH THE ENTRY FORM. (c) In all classes with two set pieces, both will be performed unless the adjudicator requires otherwise. (d) In all classes, unless otherwise stated, repeats are not to be taken except where they are short and musically necessary.

2. IN OWN CHOICE CLASSES TITLES and COMPOSERS OF ALL SELECTIONS MUST BE STATED ON THE ENTRY FORM. FAILURE TO DO THIS WILL MEAN REJECTION OF THE ENTRY. Classes requiring this information can be recognised by an X at the end of the

class number. NO CHANGE WILL BE ACCEPTED. If the performance is not as stated on the entry form, adjudication may be given but no mark, certificate or placing will be awarded.

(a) Speech and Drama - Copies for the adjudicator of the own choice pieces (includ-ing own compositions, but with the exception of Theme Presentation) must be submitted WITH THE ENTRY FORM. Failure to do this will incur disqualification and forfeiture of the entry fee. Any cuts and omissions must be clearly indicated. Each copy should be labelled with the competitor(s)’s name and the class number.

(b) Music - A copy of the piece to be performed must be made available for the adjudicator before the start of the class. (Photocopies may be acceptable - see below - rule 6).

If the services of the official accompanist are required, this must be stated on the entry form, and a copy of the music for the accompanist must be sent WITH THE ENTRY FORM. ALL MUSIC should be clearly labelled with the competitor’s name(s) and the class number. If music is not submitted with the entry form, the official accompanist will not play. (Photocopies may be acceptable - see below - rule 6).

3. The same OWN CHOICE piece must not be performed in the same class in success- ive years, or in different classes in the same year. It may be a set piece for another class, provided the performer is not taking part in that class.

C. Accompanists

All test pieces with piano accompaniment are to be performed with accompaniment unless otherwise stated. Official accompanists are engaged by the Festival. However, performers may provide their own accompanist. If a request is made for an official accompanist, this shall be a binding agreement. Except where otherwise stated, any competitor who asks the official accompanist to play from an edition other than that prescribed will be disqualified. No official accompanist will be provided for Scottish Instrumental classes or for competitors performing own choice pieces in Open Classes.

D. Adjudicators

1. Adjudicators may stop any performance when the time limit has been reached, and their decisions shall, in all cases, be final.

2. Adjudicators should not be approached by or on behalf of competitors. Breach of this rule may result in disqualification.

E. General

1. Copies of the adjudicator’s remarks are available free to every performer, and should be collected, together with the certificates, at the end of the class, or later during the Festival. Any not collected by the end of the Festival may be obtained by post from the Secretary, by quoting Class and Ballot number, and enclosing a C5 stamped addressed envelope.

2. Marks will not be awarded but gradings will be given and certificates will be issued to performers, with gradings of “O” (Outstanding), “V” (Very Good), “G” (Good) and “M” (More security of performance required). Placings for FIRST only will be given. Trophies/awards will not be presented unless “V” has been gained, and placings will not be given without “G” or better.

3. Fees for entries that have been accepted will not be refunded, except when a class is programmed for a day or time which the entrant has stated on the entry form to be unsuitable or when a class is cancelled for any reason. All claims for refunds must be made in writing to the treasurer within one week of the close of the Festival.

4. Where an entrant is forced to withdraw for any reason, it is permissible for another to substitute in ensemble or group classes. Please give as much notice of this intention as possible, so that a suitable adjudication sheet and certificate can be prepared.

5. Any complaint or objection relating to the Festival will be considered only if submitted in writing

to the General Secretary.

6. Performers are reminded that it is ILLEGAL TO COPY, whether by photostat or any other means, works which are copyright, without the written permission of the copyright holder. ANY ENTRANTS PERFORMING FROM PHOTOCOPIES (except for awkward page turns) WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. However, Music Festivals have been granted the following special dispensations:

Copies of Own Choice Works for the adjudicator: The Music Publishers’ Association has issued a revised code of practice on copyright works, and the following concession is made for copying own choice pieces from volumes only for the adjudicator. “When an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different works and which is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of an adjudicator at a competition or festival provided that the competitor or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the Competition or Festival immediately after the event. This permission specifically does not apply to set works”.

Competitors are advised that this permission applies only to copyright holders who are members of the Music Publishers’ Association (listed at the back of the Code of Practice leaflet, obtainable from the Association at Strandgate, 18/20 York Buildings, London WC2N 8JU). It is the competitor’s own responsibility to seek permission to copy direct from any copyright holder whose name does not appear on the MPA list. Single copies of items may not be photocopied without the prior permission of the copyright holder.

This permission does not apply to making copies for the accompanist, who should always be given a printed copy from which to work.

Photostat and other copies for the adjudicator must be totally legible, or they may be refused.

7. This Festival is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech, and participates in its Group Licence with the Performing Rights Society, covering live performances, and the Group Licence with the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society for the use of recorded music.

All performances using music from shows in current production are subject to copyright law. Songs from shows in current production may be sung as a concert item, i.e. with no costume or movement without need for copyright permission. Where movement or costume are included in a performance copyright permission is required and the festival committee accepts these entries on the basis that the appropriate copyright permission has been sought.

8. The use of TAPE RECORDERS and CAMERAS (including mobile phones) of any kind is NOT PERMITTED in any Festival venue, both because of copyright and other legal restrictions, and to avoid disturbing performers. The Council reserves the right to authorise recordings to be made during the Festival, and the copyright of all performances recorded during the Festival shall be the property of the Association.

MOBILE PHONES must be switched OFF before entering any Festival venue.

9. The decision of the Council in all matters arising out of, or not specifically covered in these rules, is final.

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

It is the policy of the Festival to involve participants, parents, guardians, carers and volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the Festival and to provide an environment in which everyone feels safe, comfortable and respected.

This Policy relates to children under the age of 16 years and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the Council on the entry form. By recognising the needs of those who are disabled, the Festival actively supports their participation.

Children are entered into the Festival by a parent, guardian or teacher who provide their signature and thereby agree to uphold the Festival’s policy. This policy requires that children and vulnerable adults are accompanied at all times by a responsible person who is admitted free of charge on this condition. If the person who has signed the entry form is not personally present the Festival Council requires them to be satisfied that their child(ren)/pupil(s) will be accompanied and supervised by another responsible adult on their behalf at all times.

The Festival is held in numerous venues and all sessions are open to the public. The responsible adult supervises children moving outwith the performance areas and between venues at all times. All sensitive duties are the responsibility of the accompanying adult.

The Festival is run entirely by volunteers, with professional input from adjudicators and accompanists. All Festival personnel are recruited by personal recommendation. Stewards are identified by white badges and members of Council by red badges. Any badge-holder can be approached for help and all participants should be aware of this. A list of volunteers’ details is maintained by the Stewarding Secretary and at the start of their period of duty, each volunteer is required to sign a register held by the Board Steward, confirming that they understand and will fulfil the requirements of the Child Protection Policy.

Stewards will be on duty taking cash; on the competitors’ board, ensuring children perform in order according to the programme; and as adjudicator’s assistants. In the Scottish Country Dance Section children will be directed to male/female changing rooms by Stewards and will be supervised there by the responsible adult as agreed with their parents. No Steward will accompany an individual child on his/her own at any time.

Issues relating to the Child Protection Policy will be immediately referred by the stewards to the Child Protection Officer, who will take such referrals seriously and deal with them promptly. All such incidents will be documented and dated.

No photography or recording of performances is permitted. Permission for press photographs must be obtained from the responsible adult.

As well as informing all participants of the date, time and venue for their performance, ballot-slips will also make them aware of this policy and the responsibilities of parents, guardians or carers. In addition, this Policy will also be displayed at all Festival venues and in printable publications.

The Festival Council will review this policy at least annually, and more frequently if legislation or circumstances require it.

FESTIVAL TROPHIES AND AWARDS

Trophies will be awarded to the outright winner of the class for which the trophy has been presented, provided a category of VG or above has been attained. They are to be held for one year only, and must be returned to the Custodian of Trophies not later than one month before the next Festival. On receiving a trophy, the winner will be expected to sign a receipt and an undertaking to keep it safe and to return it in good condition. Trophies requiring engraving will be available after this work has been done, normally within three weeks of the end of the Festival.

BURSARIES FOR KEYBOARD AND VOCAL CLASSES -

ALEX WATTERS MEMORIAL AWARDThis bursary will be awarded, at the discretion of the adjudicator, to a promising competitor who has performed in two or more solo keyboard classes at 16 and under, 18 and under or Open

levels. The award, worth £375 for 2009, is intended for the furtherance of keyboard studies - for example, tuition or purchase of music. The winner will be asked to present a proposal to Council for approval. Previous recipients are not eligible for this award.

RACHEL BARRY MEMORIAL AWARDThis bursary will be awarded, at the discretion of the adjudicator, to a promising competitor of 16 years of age or over who has performed in V41, 42, 48-54 and at least one other class. This may include voice and piano classes, but not Scots Song, Hebridean Song, Folk Song or Light Music. The award, worth £285 for 2009, is intended for the furtherance of vocal studies - for example, tuition or purchase of music. The winner will be asked to present a proposal to Council for approval. 1. No person may compete in more than one team in any one class.

2. A team must have 4 couples.

3. Mixed teams must consist of 4 men/boys and 4 women/girls, excluding SCD7, 8 10, 12, 13,14 and 15

4. Competitors in all classes must intimate on the entry form the name of the dance selected. No change of dance will be allowed.

5. Except in SCD11, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 21 each team to dance EIGHT times. Where twodances are set, couples one and two should dance the first dance and couples three and four the second dance. There will be a chord at the start and finish of both dances.

6. In all classes where an age qualification is stated, the age to be taken as at 1st March 2009.

7. OWN CHOICE dances must be selected from books published by the RSCDS (not branches)8. OWN CHOICE dances in SCD10 and 12 must be 32 bars.

OWN CHOICE dances in SCD16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 must be no more than 40 bars.

9. An official accompanist is available for all classes with the exception of class SD14and 15. Teams should provide their own music. A CD player will be available. A piano will not be available in the hall.

10. THE TEACHER OF A TEAM MAY INDICATE TO THE ACCOMPANIST THE SPEED REQUIRED FOR THE DANCE.

11. In the event of a single entry in any one class, an award will be given only if the competitor gains 82 marks or more. A full adjudication will be given each time.

12. Certificates will be awarded as follows: 90 marks and over Honours86-89 marks Very Good82-85 marks Good

13A Only First, Second and Third places will be announced by the adjudicator but copies of the adjudicators’ remarks are available to each team. These, together with the Certificates, should be collected at the end of the class.

13B SCD12 – Written adjudication will be given but no marks awarded. First place only will be announced.

13C SCD14 and 15 – This class will not be marked. Helpful comments will be given.

14. The adjudicators’ decision is final.

15. The use of RECORDING and VIDEO EQUIPMNENT and CAMERAS of any kind is NOT PERMITTED in the hall. This is because of legal and copyright restrictions.
