a brief historyAberavon RFC

Amongst the oldest of Wales' many rugby clubs, Aberavon RFCwas founded in 1876 by local industrialist Sir Sidney Byass.

The club's early years saw asomewhat nomadic existence,although this was far fromdetrimental as they went fromstrength to strength, with scrum-half Dan Jones becoming their firstWelsh International in 1891, andthe first silverware was won in1913 when they defeated Blaina tobecome the last winners of whatwas then called the South WalesChallenge Cup (now the SWALECCup).

Eventually the club's presenthome, the Talbot Athletic Ground,was officially opened in December1921. This heralded a goldenperiod for the club, promptingreporter Bill Taylor to dub them“The Wizards of the West” when amemorable victory over Newportcrowned a period of enormoussuccess. It was a phrase thatbecame etched into the club's

history - “The Wizards” is how theclub became known far and wide,with a Wizard emblem eventuallybeing adopted as their officialbadge during the 1970s.

1961 saw the Wizards crownedWelsh Champions, and they werecup finalists in 1974, 1975 and2011. The introduction of leaguerugby in 1990 saw them crownedDivision One champions in 1994-95, 1996-97, 2000-01 and2001-02, and since theintroduction in 2003 of regionalrugby have been ever-presentcompetitors in the WelshPremiership.

Since Dan Jones, the club hasdirectly produced no fewer than 48Welsh Internationals, the mostcapped being lock Allan Martin.

Since the turn of the 21st centurythe club has restructured to reflect

the changing demands of theprofessional era, and is nowrun by a small executive boardwhich replaced the electedcommittees of yesteryear.

Meanwhile, close co-operation with regional rugbyin the form of the Ospreys hasbeen beneficial to club, regionand country, with Ashley Beck,James King, Ryan Bevington andRhys Webb all having graduatedfrom Aberavon colours via theOspreys into the current Welshteam, and several others such asBen John and Will Price alsoappearing regularly for the region.

Not forgetting Justin Tipuric, whohas went on to represent theBritish and Irish Lions on their tourto Australia in 2013.
