CONTINENTAL BRIDGE PROJECT CONTINENTAL STREETDALLAS, TX

A new street bridge was built over the Trin-ity River connecting downtown Dallas to the lower income west side of Dallas. There-fore, the old street bridge, the Continental Bridge, will be transformed into a pedestri-an bridge. The problem in this project was how to converge the two very different sides of Dallas. The solution was to transform the bridge into a park, accessible to the public.

The concept of the design is a bridge in motion with a twisting photovotaic canopy simulates the flow of the river and the wind creating a sense of motion. Four large wind-mills, running along the whole length of the bridge, produce enough energy to power 1400 homes and businesses and gener-ate the income to pay for maintaining the bridge. A lake and fishing pond were added to the site.

This project is a study in urban design and stainability. The objective was to design a hotel with retail space underneath on the ground level. The hotel must cor-respond to green, low energy technologies and must follow all building code requirements. The facade cor-responds with the sun and consists of ceramic tubes that provide shade and lower energy costs. The first floor of the hotel contains retail space with an arcade on the outside to promote pedestrian walking.

MOPETALCATRAZ ISLANDSAN FRANCISCO, CA

13

This very historical site, on Alcatraz Island, is located in the San Francisco Bay area. Often referred to as “The Rock”, the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a Federal Bureau of Prisons federal prison until March 21, 1963. In 1972 Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986, and is now open to tours. The project is to create a museum featuring torture devices as a part of the tours that take place there on a daily basis.

The concept of MOPET (Museum of Punishment, Execu-tion and Torture) is to create a concrete building that re-sembles a rock in form. Slanted walls resemble the jagged edges of a rock and give the tourist the illusion of floors opening up and closing in on one another as one circulates through the galleries. An atrium that runs through the entire building is designed to look like an M.C. Esher painting with bridges and escalators running in different directions with an exposed glass elevator atop a water feature overlooking the atrium.
