AAAArabic Calligraphy with a rabic Calligraphy with a rabic Calligraphy with a rabic Calligraphy with a differencedifferencedifferencedifference
Arabic calligraphy with Arabic calligraphy with Arabic calligraphy with Arabic calligraphy with
a difference a difference a difference a difference describes
the work of the Jor-
danian-origin Viennese
artist Abd A. Masoud.
His goal is to reshape
the Arabic script, to
combine it with orna-
ments and symbols, to
create an artistic
work without figurative
painting.

in Wien lebende, gebürtige
Jordanier Abd A. Masoud
seine Arbeiten. Die
arabische Schrift neu zu
formen, mit Ornamenten
und Symbolen zu kombi4
nieren, aus einer bilderlosen
Darstellung ein Bild zu
komponieren 4 das ist sein
Ziel.

Um das kalligraphische Ele4
ment für das „nicht arabisch
sprechende Auge“ attrakti4
ver zu gestalten, verzich4
tet der Künstler bewusst
auf die traditionellen
Hauptkriterien der Kalligra4
phie (weißer Hintergrund
und schwarze Schrift).

In order to make the cal4
ligraphic element more
attractive for the "non4
Arabic4 speaking viewer" ,
the artist deliberately avoid
the traditional main criteria
of calligraphy (white back4
ground and black letters).
Deshalb findet der Betrachter
Hintergründe in verschieden
Mustern und Strukturen, die sich
in eine abwechslungsreichen
Farbpalette präsentieren und da4
bei den visuellen Kontrast der
arabischen Schrift bewahren.
Der Künstler arbeitet gerne mit
verschiedenen Farbschichten,
tiefen und mutigen Nuancen, die
den Betrachter in eine weite
Leichtigkeit des Bildes zu führen
vermögen

Therefore the spectator find
paintings with different back4
grounds and a variety of patterns
and structures presented in a
varied range of colours while
maintaining the visual contrast of
the Arabic script. The artist likes
to work with different colour
layers, deep and daring shades
which are able to lead the viewer
into a wide lightness of the image.

Jedes Bild deutet einen Rahmen im
Rahmen durch eine weiße Bordü4
re an. Hier liegt das Fenster,
durch das Abd A. Masoud in die
Außenwelt schaut. Seine Innen4
welt ist die Schrift in all ihren
Facetten und Schreibstilen, seine
Innenwelt offenbart sich in immer
neuen Formen und Wirkun4
gen, durch unerschöpfliche Mög4
lichkeiten seiner künstlerischen
Werkzeugverwendung.

As a character of the artist each
painting has a framework with
white border. This framework
implements the window which
Abd A. Masoud looks through to
the outer world. His inner world
is presented through the different
styles of writing in all its facets.
His inner world reveals itself in
new forms and effects, with in4
exhaustible possibilities of his ar4
tistic tools.
Im Mittelpunkt seiner Bilder liegt
die Andeutung eines Kreuzes, das
den Betrachter zum einen in
den Blickwinkel eines Fenster4
kreuzes führen will, zum anderen
aber an ein entfaltetes, altes
Schriftstück erinnern will. Der
Künstler spielt mit dem mysti4
schen Element der Veralterung
weiser Texte, alter Schrift, edler
Erinnerung.

Each of his paintings presents the
shape of a pale white colour cross
in the centre. The artist tries to
allude the viewer to imagine a
window cross but also to an
unfolded old document. The artist
plays with the mystical element of
obsolescence ancient wordings,
wise writings and precious
memories.

All seine Bilder werden mit einem
länglichen, rechteckigen Stempel
in dunkelroter Farbe signiert, ein
reizvoller Kontrast zum geschrie4
benen Text. Mit diesem Stempel
schreibt der Künstler seinen
Namen absichtlich auf arabisch
von rechts nach links. Der Schrift4
zug des Stempels erscheint am
Bild spiegelverkehrt.

All his paintings are signed with
an elongated rectangular stamp in
dark red colour, an appealing
contrast to the written text. On
purpose the artist writes with this
stamp his name in Arabic from
right to left. The lettering of the
stamp appears as a mirror image.
Die Kunst vermag all unsere

eine einzige, tiefe Seele zu geben.

Auf die Goldfarbe, die in der
traditionellen Kalligraphie nur
zum Dekorieren und Verzieren
verwendet wird, verzichtet Abd A.
Masoud nicht. Er verwendet Gold,
um die Oberflächen bestimmter
Objekte dezent zu ornamentieren
und dem Untergrund einen be4
sonderen Atem zu geben.

Abd A. Masoud does not renounce
the gold colour which is used
traditionally in Arabic calligraphy
for decorating and embellishing.
He uses the gold very discreet to
embellish the surfaces of certain
objects and give them a special
breath.
.
Seit mehr als 1350 Jahren hat der
Punkt eine wichtige Funktion in
der alltäglichen arabischen
Schrift, ja einen höheren,
mystischen Wert in der Kalligra4
phie. Für den Künstler ist der
Punkt seit jeher ein unverzicht4
bares Element in seinen Kom4
positionen und er sieht ihn als
elementaren Bestandteil seiner
Arbeiten. Mit einer Kontrastfarbe
wird die Wichtigkeit des Punk4
tes betont.

Since more than 1350 years, the
dot plays an important function in
everyday Arabic script, even a
higher mystical value in calligra4
phy.
For the artist, the dot always has
been an essential element in his
compositions and he sees it as a
part of his work. With a contrast4
ing colour he emphasizes the im4
portance of this element.

The artist gets inspiration and new
ideas often from old Arabic
manuscripts and maps. Without
getting restricted to the tradi4
tional calligraphy rolls the artist
feel his freedom to re4design
and re4interpret these ancient
scriptures and convert his
thoughts to the final result on the
canvas.

becomes curious about what he is
seeing. And starts asking. What do
I see here? What Abd A. Masoud

doing here? Which star sign I see
there? Where am I? Is all this a

Dream of a ChildDream of a ChildDream of a ChildDream of a Child
sammenleben.
Der Künstler spendet gemeinsam mit den jordani4
schen Botschaften und Honorarkonsulaten die Bil4
derserie. Im Rahmen einer Kunstauktion
werden diese Bilder versteigert.
Der Erlös geht zu Gunsten SOS4Kinderdorf Amman.
This series of pictures narrates the dream of a child,
the wish in a child's heart. The child may live here,
there or anywhere. It might be my brother, your
daughter or our neighbour’s child. It has dreams
and scribbles them on a canvas.
The child longs for a family, friends, to grow up in
peace. It wishes to be educated, to be independent,
to find a job and have a family. It longs to be free.
Free to say no. No to drugs, war, violence, no to all
things evil.
Free to say yes: Yes to peaceful coexistence.
In co4operation with the Jordanian Embassies and
the Honorary consulates , the artist is donating the
artworks. They will be sold at an auction and all
proceeds will go to benefit of SOS4Kinderdorf Am4
man.

Born 1963 in Amman, Jordan, living since 1984 in Vienna Austria
1987 Received my Bachelor of Art from Webster University, Vienna.
1989 started working professionally in the field of silk screen printing in this period acquired my first
knowledge with graphic design and Typography.
1994 I found the passion for restoring old antique wood sculpture and furniture. Through this work I
learned many techniques in this field. Autodidact I learned wood curving, calligraphy and painting.
Qualified friends in this field made this effort much easier for me. Through the years I was appreciating
art in all its forms.
With time I am trying to make the Arabic calligraphy or the Arabic signs understandable and acceptable
for Arabic and a non Arabic viewer.
2008 started running the Rearte gallery as a non profit private initiative which was launched in order to
give a chance for known and unknown artist to present themselves and there Work in an exclusive and
