Accepting: A rising leaf doesn’t cause others to fall.
Be the wind that helps everyone soar to new heights.
Big-hearted: A big heart embraces life and all of
its beauty and marvels.
Courageous: Courage is a whisper from inside
that says, “You can do this.” Fighting for what is right
will never be wrong.

Dad: The Man, the Myth, the Legend
Mifflin Lowe, Illustrated by Dani Torrent
He’s the most interesting man in the world. He
changes diapers just because he likes it. He’s
counted to infinity—twice! He’s stonger than
Sasquatch, smarter than Einstein, and he cooks a
mean spaghetti with M&Ms for all your bad days.
He’s a myth. He’s a legend. He’s . . . my dad!
Dad: The Man, The Myth, The Legend is an
epic—and totally unexaggerated—tale for dads
everywhere! Heroic, hilarious, and heartwarming,
it’s the sweet saga of Dad: protector, provider, and
child’s best friend.
And it’s all true. Right, Dad?
The end includes a page for children to write
what makes their own dad a legend.

Maybe
A M I N D F U L N E S S TA L E
Adapted from a Taoist Short Story
When a farmer’s horse runs away, his neighbors call
it the worst of news. “Maybe,” says the wise farmer, in
what will become the book’s refrain as more unexpected
events come his way. This delightful tale teaches that what
seems bad might be good; what seems good might be
bad; and in the end, all are essential, helpful experiences
in our personal journeys of growth. Filled with dreamy
woodblock prints and vintage illustrations, Maybe is
a breathtaking invitation to remember that mindful,
nonjudgment of life’s highs and lows is a surer path to
peace and wellbeing.

A dog rolling over onto his back can have multiple mean-ings. Rolling over generally means “I am not a threat.” If the tail is gently wagging and the mouth is slightly
open, the dog is probably comfortable and asking for a belly rub. If the tail is tucked and the lips are stiff, however, the dog may be scared. Some dogs will solicit attention by rolling over, but then become fearful or defensive, feeling that this position is not safe. The dog may even panic and start snapping. Again, observe the whole dog, looking for comfortable, loose body lan-guage.

A play bow, as the name suggests, is a dog’s way of invit-ing another dog, animal, or human companion to play. It’s their way of letting you know that what they’re do-
ing is just fun and games. The play bow is an important part of the social interaction between dogs. When a dog meets another dog for the first time, he may use a play bow to let the other dog know his intentions are friendly. After this, dogs are likely to engage in play. Sometimes they’ll bow when one dog gets tired of playing but the other wants to keep going.
If you’re unsure whether dogs are playful or about to start a fight, look for play bows. If you see both dogs with their chests to the ground and rear ends in the air, chances are they’re playing.

Afghanistan | 39A hmad Shah DURRANI unified the Pashtun tribes and founded
Afghanistan in 1747. The country served as a buffer between the British and Russian Empires until it won independence from notional British control in 1919. A brief experiment in increased de-mocracy ended in a 1973 coup and a 1978 communist countercoup. The Soviet Union invaded in 1979 to support the tottering Afghan communist regime, touching off a long and destructive war. The USSR withdrew in 1989 under relentless pressure by internationally supported anti-communist mujahidin rebels. A series of subsequent civil wars saw Kabul finally fall in 1996 to the Taliban, a hardline Pakistani-sponsored movement that emerged in 1994 to end the country’s civil war and anarchy. Following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, a US, Allied, and anti-Taliban Northern Alliance military action toppled the Taliban for sheltering Usama BIN LADIN.
The Taliban remains a serious challenge for the Afghan Govern-ment in almost every province. The Taliban still considers itself the rightful government of Afghanistan, and it remains a capable and confident insurgent force fighting for the withdrawal of foreign military forces from Afghanistan, establishment of sharia law, and rewriting of the Afghan constitution.
NAME OR IG IN : the name “Af-ghan” originally referred to the Pashtun people (today it is under-stood to include all the country’s ethnic groups), while the suf-fix “-stan” means “place of” or “country”; so Afghanistan literally means the “Land of the Afghans”

The SquirrelSquirrels are members of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small or medium-size rodents. The squirrel family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, flying squirrels, and prairie dogs. The word “squirrel”, used as early as 1327, comes from the Ancient Greek word skiouros, meaning “shadow-tailed.” Squirrels are found throughout almost all of North America in both cities and rural locations.

A squirrel’s tail is useful indeed! The tail can keep off the rain or wind, cool the squirrel when hot, provide balance for climbing trees, become a parachute when jumping, and send signals to other squirrels.
Sound As A Nu t
Squirrels use their sense of smell to tell if a nut is ripe. They can also tell by the weight if it’s been eaten by weevils, and they’ll reject it if it has!
Aw, Nu ts !
In colder climates, squirrels store food to help them through the winter. They use their sense of smell—and a bit of help from memory—to find them again when winter comes.
