Portugal is the world’s main cork-producing country and driver of the cork market, with around 54% of worldwide cork —an average of 185,000 tonnes— produced annually. FSC certification, with the support of the cork industry, the entire forestry and paper sectors, NGOs, land owners associations, and even the Nobel prize winner José Saramago, · The area of FSC-certified forests has reached 200,000ha (6% of Portuguese forest cover). · “The Eagle’s day” won the Gold lion at the Cannes Festival. · CocaCola and Sony Europe committed to the restoration of cork oak forest landscapes in southern Portugal. WWF signed agreements with both companies for financial support for restoration work at the Natura 2000 sites of Guadiana Basin and Monchique. · The Iberian Forest Trade network in Portugal and Spain is a collaborative initiative of WWF Spain and WWF MedPO to engage producers and traders in responsible purchasing of forest products, including cork. The initiative developed under the umbrella of the WWF Global

Cap Negro/Cap Serrat in the North of Tunisia. The Coastal Protection and Development Agency (APAL) presented the strategy accepted by the State for the creation of marine and coastal protected areas. The Directorate General of Forests presented the integrated management project of the Cap Negro zone and identified the axes of collaboration with the MedPAN South Cap Negro project. The training workshop was held in Bizerte, Tunisia, 29-30 April, 2009. Organised by the WWF Tunis Office, in collaboration with APAL, the CRDA of Beja and the Directorate General of Forests. MARINE AND COASTAL PROTECTED AREA: CAP NEGRO/ CAP SERRAT REGION Sixteen young scientists from various universities in Tunisia learnt about marine protection and conservation during a week of training in July. This project’s purpose is to increase the effectiveness of Ramsar Convention implementation in Tunisia. The recent designation of 19 new Ramsar sites in Tunisia, supported by WWF International with MAVA Foundation funding, created higher attention and motivation in the Tunisian Government towards wetland management and protection, and improved the conditions for collaboration with different actors working on wetlands. In the follow up to the launch of the new Ramsar designations, the Tunisian government asked WWF to provide support for additional designations, and for the effective conservation of recently designated wetlands.

FOREST CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN LEBANON Issue : Mount Lebanon is one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean. The loss of forest cover due to forest fire is severely affecting ecosystems and local communities in the area. Objective : WWF MedPO and partner NGO Association for Forests, Development and Conservation (AFDC) have launched a project in the Chouf mountains of central Lebanon. The project goals are to mitigate degradation caused by fires and overgrazing, improve existing practices and develop nature-based income-generating activities for local communities. Ramlieh and Qornayel are the two chosen sites for field activities. Conservation highlights · During this year, the project team has undertaken field research and identified the suitable land to purchase for the building and operation of a traditional grape press for the production of molasses in the village of Ramlieh. · The AFDC Voluntary Unit in Qornayel and a Beekeepers Cooperative have signed an agreement with the Qornayel Municipality. They will provide land which will be used to build a Rural and Forest Center to host the pine nut and natural honey production facility. · AFDC has undertaken a restoration needs assessment for both sites and purchased a forest fire truck as well as forest fire-fighting equipment. · An environmental education programme needs assessment was conducted with school representatives during a workshop in March in Qornayel village.
