1.Introduction

Language is the human tool to state and expressing the idea through communication. To be spoken and written, language has its own way to be produced. The processis called word formation. There are 11 types of word formation process and this study focus on the abbreviations which is one of the categories of word formation. In the daily use, abbreviation is familiar among the people. An abbreviation and acronym are both shortened versions of something else. Both can often be represented as a series of letters. There is a great deal of overlap between abbreviations and acronyms. Every acronym is an abbreviation because the acronym is a shortened form of a word or phrase. However, not every abbreviation is an acronym, since some abbreviations, those made from words are not new words formed from the first few letters of a series of words.

This study research took example from music groups in Korea which has unique name that make the music groups become different from the other. It is created to be unique for the audiences. One of the examples is AOA, that is a popular girlband among the people who loves Kpop. AOA means Ace of Angels, its name related with the members of group. There are six beautiful girls and only one girl who lead the members when they are performing. Ace here shows the superiority of this girlband.

To develop this study, researchers take some theory from some books. Furthermore this study to analyzed and describe the abbreviation of music groups in Korea and also find the relation between name and the members of group.

2. Theoretical Framework

This chapter presents the theories that underlie the analysis of this research. It consists of review of underlying theory and related study. The theory employed in this study is the theory of word-formation processes taken from George Yules theory (1996) in the study of language as the major theory. Since this theory elaborates the explanation of word-formation processes, it is useful to analyze the data to find the compounding and the abbreviation or acronyms among music groups in Korea.

The writer also takes two supporting theories of word formation processes. The first theory is taken from Norman C. Stageberg in his book and another theory is Laurie Bauer of word-formation processes in his book English Word Formation (1983). The writer uses George Yules theory because this theory is more complete and the explanation is clearer. His classifications of word formation processes include both Stagebergs and Bauers theories. In the three theories, the writer finds the similarity and difference of the three classification of word formation process.

Yules theory has similarities with Stagebergs that classify word formation processes into coinage, derivation, compounding, clipping, acronyms, blending and back formation. Yules theory and Bauers have similarities on the explanation of derivation, compounding, conversion, back formation, clipping, blending and acronyms. The two supporting theories of Stageberg and Bauer also have similarities on the compounding, derivation, back formation, clipping, blending and acronyms. The similarities of the three books are on the classification of word formation processes into compounding, clipping, acronyms, blending, back formation and derivation. But the writer only focus on the theory about compounding and acronym which support the analysis of this research.

This study analyze the compounding and acronyms of the name of music groups in Korea, according to the George Yule (The study of language:1996:63-70) compounding is the combining process of combining two separate words to produce a single form. Obvious english examples would be book and case-> bookcase, finger, and print -> fingerprint, sun, and burn -> sunburn, wall, and paper -> wallpaper, door, knob -> doorknob, text and book -> textbook, waste and basket -> wastebasket, and water and bed -> waterbed

Acronym is the process of forming new words from the initial letters of a set of other words. These can remain essentially alphabetisms such as CD ( compact disk ) where the pronunciation consists of the set of letters. Commonly, acronyms are pronounced as single words, as in NATO or UNESCO. These examples have kept their capital letters, but many acronyms lose their capitals to become everyday terms such as radar ( radio detecting and ranging and etc.

3.Method

This paper uses a descriptive and qualitative approach. The researchers use a descriptive research because this study describe the words of word formation processes of the words and concern in the compounding and the abbreviation or acronym of music groupss name in Korea. In analyzing the data, the researchers will analyze all of the collected name of several music groups in Korea which is very popular among young people in the world. For the fisrt step, the researchers will identifying the data, classifying the data into compounding and acronym, and the last is describing the name of music groups that has relation with the member og group. The researhers classifies them based on the George Yules theory of word formation process.

Korean magazine, Korean channel, and other programs about Kpop were chose for the record instrument because it was the effective way to collected the data and get the information about the member of the group itself. The researcher also used television as the tool for the source to get the data. Writing memos was done to figure out how the categories were related.

Conclusion

Word formation processes are the way of forming new words or terms from the use of old word to the new uses. The process consists of coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, back-formation, conversion, acronyms, and derivation (Yule 1985: 51). Word formation processes is one of the examples of the language change. Word formation processes change the language to be simpler, shorter yet meaningful. From the data analysis in the previous part, the result shows that
