The concept

The TZID positioner is an intelligent and electronically configurabledevice with communication capabilities. High-tech electronicsare coupled with a robust and well-proven mechanical constructionon the pneumatic side to obtain an optimal design of positioner:the SENSYCON concept from Hartmann & Braun.

The functional heart of the TZID positioner is its CPU (seeillustration below). The mechanical and pneumatic assemblygroups only have secondary functions. The input signal (setpoint) and the position (actual value) are fed into the processorvia A/D converter. An output signal is computed on the basis ofthe control deviation and a PD control algorithm. The signal isoutput to an I/P module via a D/A converter and is used foranalog modulation of the I/P module. The I/P module provides forpneumatic, analog adjustment of a 3/3 way valve. The cross-sectional area of the valve air ducts for filling the actuator with airor evacuating air from the actuator is changed in proportion withthe adjustment. Continuous signal modulation yields optimalresults in terms of precise and rapid control until reaching the setpoint and in terms of the adaptation to actuators of different sizesand different supply pressures.

The I/P conversion is done with the same I/P module as used forthe TEIP 11 signal converter. This well-proven module is alreadyused in the field more than 500.000 times and has an unequaledimmunity to shock and vibration.

The TZID positioner has a two-wire 4...20 mA input. The energyneeded to power the electronic component parts is derived fromthe input signal. Compressed air (1.4....6 bar) is the only externalenergy required. The TZID has a low consumption of less than 4mA due to the two-wire circuitry, and of only 0.03 kg compressedair per hour.

A rotating axis for determining the position is the only movingpart of the TZID. An inductive, non-contact sensor converts theposition into an electrical signal. As a result, the wear-rate is verylow.

The TZID positioner provides for maximum operational reliability.Adherence to the EMC regulation ensures immunity to EMF andRFI. The robust IP 65 (NEMA 4X) metal housing protects theTZID against harsh environments. Special functions for monitoringthat the CPU works properly and that the control point is controlledcorrectly deliver an alarm message if an error occurs.

The TZID positioner is designed for the operating temperaturerange of -40 to +85 °C (-40 to +185 °F).

Attachment

The TZID can be attached to pneumatic actuators for linear(stroke) or rotary movement (angle of rotation), to actuators withspring return (single acting) or with double air action (doubleacting).

The off-the shelf devices are designed for attachment conformingto the standard (lateral attachment to DIN/IEC 534 or attachmentto rotary actuators to VDI/VDE 3845). Customized actuator-specific versions for special attachment are available upon request.

When mounting the positioner to an actuator, a rough balancingof the mechanical link for converting the stroke suffices. Thewide usable range of the angle of rotation dispenses with theneed for a time-consuming mechanical adjustment. The fineadjustment is done automatically through the autostroke.

The air connections and the cable glands are located on the righthand side, making installation easy. NPT connections are providedfor the air pipes, and screw terminals are available for connectingthe electrical wires.

Matching to the operating conditions

Various parameters can be set to achieve optimal results interms of precise valve control and operational reliability. Duringoperation the parameters can be readjusted if required and willthen be taken over by the positioner in on-line mode.

Parameters for the current operation

■ Time-out monitoring(This function generates an alarm if the system is not able todrive the deviation into the dead band within the set time.)

■ Adjusted speed for full stroke 100 %(Stroke ramp, can be set independently for each direction.)

■ Alarm limits for "Min." and "Max." positions

Parameters for diagnosing the operating condition

Prior to preventive maintenance you can make a diagnosisusing the following data:

■ Counts for the individual control actions and the totaldisplacement of the valve (spindle). The values indicate theuse of the valve. Limits can be defined for both counters.If the limits are exceeded, an alarm is generated.

■ Record of the current control operation in tabular form. Thedefined signal and the controlled position are continuouslylisted with a high-resolution, adjustable cycle time of40...160 msec.

■ Record of the transfer function in tabular form. The controlledposition after a set point jump (position signal) is recordedwith a high-resolution, adjustable cycle time of 40...160msec.

The values saved in tabular form can be exported as an EXCELfile and can then be converted into a graphic display.

Setting alarms and simulation values

Various alarm messages are available for monitoring the TZIDduring operation. Additionally, simulation values can be configuredfor testing during commissioning.

Among the errors which may generate an alarm are:

■ Leakage in the actuator or the connecting pipe

■ Positioning signal < 4 or > 20 mA

■ Determined position is out of the range adjusted for the angleof rotation

■ Manual manipulation of CPU operation(controller not active)

■ Positioning time-out (time can be set)

■ Limit of stroke counter or displacement meter exceeded(limits can be set during diagnosis)

The alarm is indicated as an error code on the built-in operatorpanel and is reported via communication. If supplementarymodules are plugged in, there is also the possibility of an alarmwhich is configurable in the direction of action. Additionally, youcan set the respective parameters to define which of the messagesare to be generated.

When using the TZID with plugged-in supplementary modules foranalog or digital feedback there is also the possibility of simulation.Active simulation values are automatically deleted after 2 minutes.During this time period the TZID’s control function is disabled.The simulation values can only be activated via the communicationport.

General

The TZID positioner has a built-in operator panel with specialadjustment capabilities tailored to commissioning. The full rangeof TZID functions can only be accessed via the communicationport.

On the built-in operator panel you can make any adjustment thatis necessary to commission the positioner after attachment tothe actuator. The panel is intuitively operable. Short instructionsprinted on the panel contain the required information.

The full range of functions described above is available via thecommunication port. Communication is based on the HARTprotocol. Signals can be tapped either locally at the connector orfrequency-modulated at any chosen point of the 4...20 mA signaltransmission. Communication is done on line while the system isrunning, without impairing operation. New parameter settingsbecome active immediately after being downloaded into the device,but have to be stored in the non-volatile memory with a specialcommand.

A special connector (LCI adapter or FSK modem), a standard off-the-shelf PC (which has to meet special hardware requirements),and a special software (IBIS or Smart Vision® from Hartmann &Braun) are needed for communication.

LCI adapter as communication link

The LCI adapter is a connection solution which is both easy toinstall and cost-saving. On the TZID side a special connector(Local Communication Interface) is used. On the PC side, adouble sub-D connector with a 9-pole and a 25-pole connector isused. The connector also accommodates an RS 232 interfaceconverter for connection to the PC.

The TZID can be configured without requiring that a positioningsignal is present. The CPU is powered by the PC.

FSK modem as communication link

The FSK modem allows digital frequency-modulatedcommunication (Frequency Shift Keying). The digital signal "0"corresponds to 2.2 kHz, the digital signal "1" to 1.2 kHz. Tappingis possible at any chosen point of 4...20 mA transmission, i.e.directly on site at the TZID or in any remote place, e.g. at a PLCin the control room. Frequency-modulated communication requiresa circuit with a resistance of at least 250 ohms.

The FSK modem is available with or without electrical isolation.In conjunction with a special isolating amplifier - e.g. TET 128,Contrans I or Contrans_remote - the model with electrical isolationis suitable for connection to a bus. Communication is also possiblewith a TZID with explosion protection, provided that the modemitself is placed outside the hazardous area. If these capabilitiesare not required, you can also use the cost-saving modem withoutelectrical isolation (FSK Modem II). For details and technicaldata refer to data sheets 15-6.97 EN (FSK Modem) and 18-0.31EN (FSK Modem II).

IBIS Software

The IBIS (Intelligent Broadcasting and Information System)Software is a windows-type graphical user interface with user-friendly and intuitively operable standardized windows. IBIS offerscomfortable functions for configuring, monitoring and testingintelligent field and control room instruments.

You can install and call up IBIS in different languages, select thecommunication interface as required, and protect access with apassword. IBIS is controlled via mouse or keyboard. Context-sensitive on-line help can be called up for all menu items bypressing the < F1 > key.

The Smart Vision® communication software can be used with allHART compatible devices from Hartmann & Braun and fromBailey-Fischer & Porter. Due to its open structure Smart Vision®

allows communication with other devices as well. Definedcommands can be realized easily by using available tools andwithout requiring major efforts.

Smart Vision ® enables:
