PARTS FOR EXTERIOR OPERATION

Upper side (A)Five reading wheels (A1). Index window (A2).

The wheels can be turned in both directions. The starting position can be marked by letters againstthe index line in window (A2).

Lock (A3) for releasing of lid (E1). Pressing the lock to the right, the lid canftropened forinsertion of a punched card (interior key). A white plate (A4) is intended for notes of the insertedi n t e r i o r k e y ( p u n c h e d c a r d ) i n t h e e q u i p m e n t . ; , > :

In window (A7) an incoherent alphabet "on an alphabet sheet (inserted around a cylinder in theequipment) is visible. Over and under this incoherent alphabet a frame alphabet is printed (withletters in alphabetical order). - Substitution table (A8) can be used for turning digits into lettersb e f o r e e n c i p h e r m e n t ( t e x t s o r t i n g r e a s o n s ) . Front side (B)Adjustment screw (B1) for lining up of incoherent alphabets on the sheet on the cylinder.

Right side (C)Lid (C1) of the alphabet cylinder. The lid can be opened by pressing back lock (C2). The cylindercan thus be removed for mounting and dismounting of alphabet sheets. Screw (C3) for setting ofcounter meter (A6) to starting position. This turning screw causes rotating of counter meter andselection wheels, in both-directions, when lock (A5) is pressed back.

Leftside (D)Handle (D1). This handle shall be turned before every en- or deciphering step. When turning thehandle, the reading wheels will select information from the punched card. This information willcause selection of a certain incoherent alphabet visible in window (A7).

B a c k s i d e ( E ) f e s i rLid (El). The lid can be opened by pressing lock (A3) to the right. Behind the lid a card holderfor insertion of a punched card can be found.

2.1.1 General measuresControl that the clear text is arranged for enciphering (into five-groups, digits-iumed to letters andso on).

Release counter meter (A6) by pressing lock (A5) back and set it to zero (0000).

Set your exterior key (starting point in program) by turning discs of reading wheels so that theselected starting position marked by letters is visible in window (A2).

Note positions as they have to be given to receiver.

2 . 1 . 2 E n c i p h e r m e n tTurn handle (D1).

Read your first clear text letter in frame alphabet and substitute it with corresponding letters inthe incoherent alphabet presented in alphabet window (A7). This is your first cipher letter.

Write this letter as your first letter on your cipher form.

Turn handle (D1).

i ' ■■:;-, ■

Read your second clear text letter in the frame alphabet and substitute it with corresponding letterin the incoherent alphabet presented in window (A7). This is your second cipher letter.

Write this letter as your second letter on your cipher form.

T u r n h a n d l e ( D 1 ) . :

Read your third clear text letter and so on. fWhen you have enciphered your fifth letter, control that your counter meter (A6) is in position0 0 0 5 . i

I

Perform this control by looking at the counter meter for every fifth letter (0010, 0015 and so on)to be sure that you have not missed any of your clear text letters.

When you have enciphered all clear text letters on your clear text form and, marked it to ensurethat it will be kept secret, give as first information to receiver the exterior key that has been used.

Complete ciphering form with necessary administrative information (sender, receiver, sendingt i m e , d a t e a n d s o o n ) . • ;

IThe cipher message is now ready for transmission.

Read your first cipher letter in the frame alphabet and substitute it with the corresponding letterm the incoherent alphabet presented in the alphabet window (A7). This is your first clear textletter to be written on your clear text form.

Turn the handle (D1).

Read your second cipher letter in the frame alphabet and substitute it with the correspondingletter in the incoherent alphabet presented in the alphabet window (A7). This is your second cleartext letter to be written on your clear text form.

Turn the handle (D1).

Read your third cipher letter and so on.

When you have deciphered your fifth letter, control that your counter meter (A6) is in position

Perform this control for every fifth letter (0010, 0015 and so on) to be sure that you have notmissed any cipher letter. (If you miss a single letter, the rest of the message cannot be correctlydeciphered). When you have deciphered the whole message, turn the letters indicated as digits intodigits again in the clear text by using the substitution table (A8).

Make the necessary notes on clear text form to mark that it is a text that has been enciphered.

3 . 1 G e n e r a l sThe interior keys — the program — for the equipment consist of an alphabet sheet holding 16incoherent alphabets and a punched card holding 29+ 31 +33+34+ 35 = 162 reading positions.The information from these positions are read by five reading wheels.

The interior keys are changed periodically (key periods).

Different groups of subscribers can have different interior keys.

Open the lid (C1) of the alphabet cylinder and take the cylinder out by the handle.

When the sheet is placed all around the,.cyUnder, its edges are locked in position by the bar (C7)a n d t h e b a r l o c k ( C 6 ) . . • •

Now put the cylinder back into the equipment holding it by the cylinder handle (C5).

On the inner flat side of the cylinder there are two holes, one big and one small. The small oneshall fit to a tap in the equipment. Turn the cylinder slowly, pressing it into the. equipment untilthe tap and-hole are in position. Then the cylinder will fit into its proper position in the equip-m e n t . • 5 ■ , \' r

If the alphabet is not in correct position, this depends on a slightly incorrect mounting of the sheeton the cylinder.

If necessary, correct the alphabet position by turning the adjustment screw (B1) on the front.
