2 THE CENTURION • THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF LEIGH CENTURIONS RLFC

FROM THE TOPWelcome to the players, officials and supporters of Workington Town for this afternoon’s 1895 Cup tie at Leigh Sports Village. Town have a number of ex-Leythers in their ranks who are sure to get a great reception this afternoon. Sadly, it looks as though former Leigh captain Oliver Wilkes will miss out having sustained a hamstring injury- the first such injury of his career I understand- in the recent game at Coventry. Oliver did great service for Leigh and led from the front as captain and he’ll be gutted if he misses out. Just like Micky Higham he started playing the professional game in the late 1990s and his great professionalism and attitude, not to mention ability, has seem him play at a high level for 20 years which is a fantastic achievement. .............................................................. Town are currently just outside the play-off places in League One and have won four out of nine league games. With just eleven to go in a really competitive division it will be an interesting few months for them. Chris Thorman has recently taken over as coach, a player I saw many times over the years. Chris hails from Wallsend in Newcastle-on-Tyne and is a highly-rated coach who I’m sure will enjoy his time at Derwent Park and build a career as equally successful in the coaching ranks as he was a player. The next three Sundays see games at LSV with the highly anticipated visits of Halifax and Bradford Bulls to follow. After that we go on the road for over a month while the pitch undergoes its annual maintenance. June could well be a pivotal month in our season and I’m sure John Duffy and the players will be working hard to maintain the positive feel at the club with some more consistent performances and results. I thought some of the attacking rugby played by both teams in our last home game against Sheffield Eagles was absolutely outstanding and watching the game again on LCTV again highlighted just what fantastic players are to be found in each Championship team. The Widnes

game at the Summer Bash further confirmed this view as Leigh had to be very, very good to defeat Widnes in what was a really compelling, high quality game. It was interesting to learn that the viewing figures for that game on Sky Sports were higher than for the Leeds-Cas game two days before and shows that there is a real appetite amongst Rugby League followers to watch as many games as they can in the Betfred Championship. The defeat in France last weekend was very disappointing but the players have the talent and ability to quickly put that game behind them and bounce back. And there can be no bigger incentive for them than the prospect of playing at Wembley which three wins in the remaining rounds of the 1895 Cup will guarantee. Like many Leigh fans I suffered the disappointment of defeat at the semi-final stage of the Silk Cut Plate competition in 1997. That competition ran for only one year and Leigh got through to within 80 minutes of Wembley only to go down to defeat against Hull Kingston Rovers at Hilton Park. Rovers went on to lift the Plate beating Hunslet in the final which was played as a curtain-raiser to the Saints-Bradford Challenge Cup Final. I can still remember the excitement of the Rovers players that day and at the time thought the subsequent decision to abandon the competition was a short-sighted one. Now the players in the Championship and League One have the opportunity to play on the game’s biggest stage and with Toronto and Toulouse not involved many teams will feel they have more than a realistic opportunity of achieving that ambition. I’m sure the 1895 Cup will be a big success for the RFL and I congratulate

them on its introduction. The Summer Bash at Blackpool was a great occasion and the high quality of play in all seven Betfred Championship games again showcased the tremendous quality of the competition. The support of the Leigh Centurions fans was outstanding really gave the final game of the weekend an added sense of occasion. Several hundred Leigh fans went to Toulouse last weekend and I know their support was again greatly appreciated by the coaching staff and players. There was sad news recently with the passing of Terry Entwistle, a great Leigh player of the 1960s and there were some lovely tributes paid to him on social media after the obituary was published, many from his former playing colleagues. As a reminder of how quickly time moves on, Josh Simm recently became the first Leigh player to be born in the new Millennium when he made his debut in the Summer Bash. Josh is the latest Saints player to embrace playing for Leigh on dual registration and it’s been great to see how many of the Saints players that have played for us this year have gone back to their parent club and become first team regulars. Josh comes from good Rugby League stock as his grandfather was the late Geoff Pimblett, a fantastic Saints fullback and a gentleman. I’m sure Geoff will be looking down with pride as his grandson makes his way in the professional ranks. It will be great to be back at LSV today after playing just four home games in the past three months. I’m sure the sun will be shining, as it always does in Leigh, and we’ll see a great cup-tie between two of the great traditional teams of our great sport. Enjoy the game, Mike

THE CENTURION • THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF LEIGH CENTURIONS RLFC 5

This afternoon we take a break from league action and welcome Workington Town to Leigh Sports Village for a second round tie in the 1895 Cup. This cup gives sides from outside Super league the opportunity to play at Wembley and I think it’s a great initiative by the RFL that will receive great support.

We enter at the second round stage which means that if we win today we are only two games away from Wembley so I’m sure the excitement and anticipation will continue to grow as the competition develops.

Workington are a proud cup-fighting team and have their own Wembley memories so they will provide very stern opposition today. They have a new coach in Chris Thorman, who was a great player in Super League for many years and also had a season in the NRL. Chris has since moved into the coaching ranks and his experience at both York and latterly as assistant coach at Huddersfield Giants will serve him well for the challenge of reviving Workington.

League One is a very tough and tight division and looking at some of the results the top eight or nine teams are capable of beating one another, so it’s a competition that will go right to the wire. Town will be fighting hard to get in the play-off places but with only 20 league games there’s no margin for error.

The cup for them, like us, will give them a break from the league and with several ex-Leigh players in their ranks all looking forward to playing at LSV again we are under no illusions as to the task we face today. They had a great win at Hunslet in the last round and followed that up with a hard-fought league win over Hunslet at Derwent Park in their last game. When you think that Hunslet then won at Newcastle last weekend it shows just how impressive those wins were. You look at the Town side and they’ve got some fantastic players.

For ourselves it gives us a chance to regroup after a disappointing defeat in France. We have lads who need a rest, others who need game time so we will assess it, re-group and make sure we pick the right team.

Ryan Brierley’s loan spell was up after the Toulouse game and he went back to Toronto last Monday. He’s been fantastic for us and he enjoyed his time back at Leigh and the reception and welcome he got from everyone was special.

The trip to France was a big disappointment but we have got to put that behind us. We had travel problems before the game and four players had to go on different flights and didn’t have their baggage. There were quite a few other factors but they were not excuses and shouldn’t have affected the performance.

I’d like to thank all the Leigh fans that spent their hard-earned money going across to France to support the boys and hopefully we can repay them with a good performance this week at the start of a crucial month. ..........................................................

The Summer Bash game against Widnes was everything we expected it to be. It was a great weekend of Rugby League, finished off by that magnificent performance by us. We went to Widnes on Good Friday and didn’t turn up, and I’d been waiting for the return game ever since.

The lads were outstanding- we only dropped one set the whole game and so our completion rate was very high. We had a couple of shaky moments in that second half, but we battled through and came out with a great win against a great team.

It’s only just sunk into the players what a derby game is and Widnes is our derby game. That was for the fans, who were superb. We went to Blackpool to perform, and we were outstanding across the board.

Enjoy the game, Duffs

6 THE CENTURION • THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF LEIGH CENTURIONS RLFC

I’ve been involved in the great game of Rugby League a long time and one thing I’ve learned over the years is not to get too excited after a win or too despondent after a defeat. That’s probably as well because our last two games brought vastly different outcomes and emotions. Against Widnes in the Summer Bash we were outstanding and our fourth win on the bounce showed how much we’d developed and learnt as a team since the poor display at Widnes on Good Friday. Blackpool’s a big stage to play on and the Leigh fans turned out in numbers, packing the north stand at Bloomfield Road. The Widnes fans were superb too and the game had a great atmosphere and really came across brilliantly on Sky. After being so disappointed with our display at Widnes, Duffs drummed it into the players that this was our derby game and that we had to perform. Waiting all weekend for the game and being last on after six previous games was tough but it was well worth the wait. I thought our display was outstanding- near enough 100 percent completion and some great attacking moves and tries, plus a real backs-to-the-wall effort to dig in and regroup after Widnes launched that comeback. After the crushing disappointment of the defeat against Toronto at Blackpool the year before it was a great feeling to get the win and reward all the Leigh fans for their fantastic support. All the players were full of praise for the support we got and the new lads in the team are beginning to realise just what a big club Leigh is and how the whole town lives and breathes the game. I thought the Betfred Championship was again highlighted really positively at the Bash and the coverage of all the games on Sky was a big plus. There was some great rugby played and the weekend again confirmed just what a high quality of players there are in the competition. Looking at the table the battle for the top five is really hotting up while the battle to avoid the two relegation places is equally intense and so the second half of the season promises much. As we move into summer the grounds get firmer, the skills get sharpened and players have to adjust their games to deal with the

hotter weather. Many are carrying injuries and so teams have a real battle to get out their best teams and keep everyone fit. Week after week it’s a real test of character and the dedication of the players, most of whom are part-time, is quite incredible. We have a big month coming up with the visits of Halifax and Bradford in successive weeks before we start our annual road trips while the LSV pitch gets its maintenance. Today we take a break from the league and welcome Workington Town in the 1895 Cup. Having been fortunate enough to have played and won at Wembley with Warrington Wolves I know just how special it is to play at the national stadium and for Championship and League One teams to have a chance of playing there is not to be missed. The winners of today’s game are just 160 minutes away from Wembley and I’m sure that thought will sink in on the final hooter. I think it’s a great initiative by the RFL to introduce this cup competition and just like the Summer Bash I’m sure it’ll become a valued and essential part of the season. It’ll be like friends reunited this afternoon with so many former Leigh players returning to LSV to play against their old club. You look at the Town side and there are some great players in their ranks so we are under no illusions just how hard it will be this afternoon to get the result we all want. I don’t like finishing on a negative but as club captain the trip to France was a big setback and we didn’t cover ourselves in glory. After the high of the Widnes game, six days on we looked really flat and we allowed a very impressive Toulouse team to

take control of the game and surrendered the initiative. Once you’ve done that it’s hard to reverse the flow of the game. Though Toulouse scored six of their eight tries in the second half I felt the damage had been done in the first half. It’s always difficult going to France with travel problems and a short turnaround and they don’t exactly make it easy for you but there are no excuses from us. The game’s gone now, it’s been thoroughly reviewed and just as we didn’t fall in love with ourselves after Blackpool we aren’t going to get too down after one defeat. Lessons learned and a steely determination to get back to winning ways are what I’ve picked up in training this week. In closing I’d just like to thank all the fans who made Blackpool such a special occasion and then those that followed the team to Toulouse. It’s greatly appreciated by everyone at the club and we are fortunate to have so many loyal and fantastic supporters. Enjoy the game, Micky

Chris Thorman during his playing days with Huddersfield Giants

WELCOME TO TODAY’S VISITORS

Workington Town visit LSV this afternoon for the first time since the 2016 season with new coach Chris Thorman settling into his role at Derwent Park. Thorman was recruited to replace Leon Pryce a few weeks ago to take the senior head coaching role after a spell as assistant coach at Huddersfield Giants.

Upon taking up the reins at Town Thorman said before the 1895 Cup clash at Hunslet: “More than anything, I am looking forward to watching them play. If I have any points before or during the game then I will gladly share it but all I want to say to them is if they want to impress me, it is in their own interest to have a good game.

“This is regardless of whether we are in a cup competition or in the league.

“I took the session on Thursday night but I have known Ollie Wilkes for a long time, I lived with him during our Academy days. And I know Fuifui Moimoi from Parramatta and Danny Tickle from my time at Hull. Plus I have got to trust the staff that are already here.

“So in regards to team selection I have said that I don’t know them well enough yet.

“I have to take a slight backward seat until I understand who the people are and what they are capable of and what they’re not capable of.”

Town brought in Centurions hooker Declan O’Donnell on a one month loan ahead of the game to provide some cover. And Thorman believes he will provide great cover in the number nine position, with

Sean Penkywicz the only recognised hooker currently in the squad.

“He is a young up and coming hooker and this s a position we needed to strengthen in,” said Thorman. “We only have Penky and he is a very good player at this level but it only takes one injury and we are struggling so Declan has been brought in.

“I will have a lot more input on the recruitment going forward but I will assess things next week and we will take it from there.”

Workington pulled off a great win at Hunslet to progress but then lost a high-scoring game at Coventry in Thorman’s first League 1 game in charge before defeating Hunslet 12-4 to leave them with four wins from nine games in the very competitive 11-team competition.

A hamstring injury sustained by former Leigh captain Wilkes in the game at Coventry will unfortunately rule him out of an emotional return to LSV today but there are plenty of Leigh old boys sure to get a good reception from the North Stand today. Penkywicz, Moimoi and Danny Tickle, outstanding in the 12-4 win over Hunslet a fortnight ago, Sam Hopkins and Carl Forber together with ex Leigh East junior Ryan Fieldhouse are also on familiar territory and for once will not have a long journey for an away game.

Thorman, 38, was born in Wallsend and came up through the North East development teams before joining Sheffield Eagles. He went on to enjoy a fine playing career, also playing for Huddersfield Giants in two spells, London Broncos, Hull FC and York as well as a

stint with Parramtatta Eels in the NRL in 2004. He represented Yorkshire and England.

He’s had a tough initiation with Town suffering an injury crisis and unable to field a full fit squad of 17 players. “Never in my Rugby League lifetime have I known a team 14 and then 16 players in consecutive weeks so it’s been a tough start,” he said. “The thing that’s been hurting us is the lack of strength in depth in the outside backs. Tyler Mellor, Perry Singleton and Elliot Miller, who would all be assured starters for us are all still quite a few weeks away from returning.”

In their last outing Town recorded that hard-fought win over Hunslet at Derwent Park with tries by Tom Curwen and Gordon Maudling and two Carl Forber goals in front of 610 spectators. With a fortnight’s rest Thorman will be hoping to get more players back to bolster his squad for this afternoon’s game and for the rest of the campaign. ..............................................................

Last season Town finished fourth in League 1 and after beating Doncaster lost 27-8 to Bradford Bulls in the Promotion Final having beaten them both home and away in the league. They then lost 33-20 to Swinton Lions in the Championship Promotion/Relegation Play-Off.

Elliot Miller was top try-scorer with 16 tries followed by Jamie Doran and Joe Hambley (14 apiece) with Penkywicz and Sam Forrester (13 apiece) also in double figures. The long-serving Carl Forber kicked 102 goals and contributed 224pts in 29 games.

Terry played 152 games for Leigh in the 1960s having started his professional career with Wigan and he later played for Blackpool Borough. Bob Welding played alongside him in the Leigh side. “Terry was a Wigan lad who came to Leigh when Alan Prescott was coach,” Bob recalls. “He was a scrum-half with a good pair of hands, but his main asset was his defence. He was very strong defensively and as he was a bonny lad for a scrum-half. He could hold his own in any company. “Terry was always a bit of a joker and was very good for team spirt. He was big mates with our prop Bill Robinson, another Wigan lad and he was a good player to have alongside you. “It’s an old cliché but you’d rather have had him on your side than playing against you. “When it came down to the nitty-gritty of playing Rugby League you could rely on Terry.” Tommy Dickens also played alongside Entwistle at Hilton Park. “Terry was a great lad,” Tommy recalls. “Being from Wigan, Jim Parr, Terry and me used to

meet one another and travel together to training and matches and we had a good laugh. “Terry was from a coal-bagging family and worked for his dad as a teenager. That made him very strong in the shoulders, just as it did for David Eckersley, another great Leigh player with a similar background from the same era. “Terry was very strong defensively and he was a good player to have on your team. He’d partnered Dave Bolton at halfback at Wigan but lost his place due to the emergence of Frankie Parr and Wigan also brought in players from outside like (former Scotland RU international) Brian Shillinglaw around that time. Wigan’s loss was Leigh’s gain and Terry really enjoyed his time at Hilton Park. “When his career was over Terry continued to watch the game avidly and used to go regularly to Central Park. His father made him get a trade and he was a painter and decorator for the rest of his working life, so many people in the local area will remember him, not just for his rugby.” After signing professional from the Spring View amateur club Entwistle had played

94 games for Wigan over six seasons, scoring eleven tries and kicking two goals. He won a Championship-winners medal in 1959-60 and was a member of the Wigan side defeated 12-6 by St Helens in the 1961 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley. He joined Leigh initially on loan and made his debut in a 22-12 home win over Whitehaven at Hilton Park in April 1963, retrospectively earning heritage number #719. The following season, 1963-64, he played in 41 of Leigh’s 42 games, often partnering the late Austin Rhodes in a fine combination at half-back. Together they played in the Leigh side defeated 15-4 by St Helens in the 1963 Lancashire Cup Final in front of 21,321 spectators at Station Road, Swinton. He made one more cup final appearance for Leigh in the 1967 BBC2 Floodlit Trophy at Wheldon Road when Castleford lifted the trophy by virtue of a nail-biting 8-5 win before 9,525 spectators. During that season, with Alex Murphy now installed as player-coach, Entwistle played in 40 of Leigh’s 43 games as they finished seventh in the league, their best position for seven seasons. Entwistle last played in December 1968 in a Floodlit Trophy semi-final defeat at Central Park. Wigan won 9-7 in front of 12,000 spectators. He scored 14 tries and kicked one goal in 136 starts for Leigh plus a further 16 from the substitute’s bench. After a spell out of the game Entwistle was transferred to Blackpool Borough for a £250 fee in September 1969 where he teamed up again with his old Wigan team-mate Billy Boston and he played out his distinguished career with two seasons at the seaside. ............................................................. Josh Simm carved out a little piece of history for himself when he made his senior debut in Leigh Centurions’ thrilling Betfred Championship Summer Bash victory over Widnes Vikings at Blackpool. The teenaged centre, on dual registration from St Helens, became the first Leigh player to be born in the new Millennium.

Simm, who was born in February 2001, also became one the youngest players to represent the club in recent times.

The late Dick Breare is recognised as the youngest known debutant player to represent Leigh. Dick, who passed away in October 2014 aged 91 was aged 16 years 293 days when he made

his Leigh first-team debut against Salford in October 1939.

In more recent times Jason Donohue made his Leigh debut on 12 March 1989 against Rochdale Hornets at Hilton Park, aged 16 years 328 days.

Fellow halfback Josh Ward made his debut in the Anglo-French Challenge against Avignon at LSV on 2 June 2012. At that time Ward was aged 16 years 351 days.

Leigh Centurions head coach John Duffy knows a thing or two about early debuts. He was aged 16 years and 262 days when handed his Warrington Wolves debut in Super League against London Broncos in March 1997.

“In that era quite a lot of players made their debuts as teenagers,” Duffy said. “It doesn’t happen as often these days.

“For me, looking back, it was probably a bad thing as I was thrown to the pigeons rather than drip-fed in. That was it, I never went back to the academy ranks.

“Josh, though, has been doing really well at academy level, where he’s a prolific try-scorer and was ready for the next step.

“He’s got a big frame and he’s very athletic and had a sureness about him and is dynamic in the way he trains.

“You could tell straight away he’d been well coached and has been through a good system. He came to training and was 30 minutes early and was very keen to get his clips and ask questions.

Josh Simm’s debut was closely followed by the directors and staff of Leisure Resorts, who sponsor all the Saints dual-registered players to play for Leigh Centurions in 2019. Leisure Resorts also sponsor the top back of both the home and away shirts and the company owner, Gary Molloy and Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont have a strong business relationship.

Leisure Resorts, although a recently formed company, is a company born from experience with its directors bringing 50 years of combined knowledge and expertise along with a proven track record of establishing and developing award-winning 5-star parks of the highest calibre across the country.

THE LEGENDARY

Star footballer, the idol of the crowds hits bankruptcy problems saddled by gambling debts, but fights back from the brink. It sounds like a modern-day story in the red tops but instead it's the tale of one of the stars of the early days of the Northern Union. Jack Hurst earned everlasting fame with his try-scoring exploits on the wing in the late 1880s and 1890s and was one of the best-known players in the country. Enticed to leave hometown Leigh and join Oldham with the promise of a pub thrown in- this in the days of so-called strict amateurism in the rugby union era- he became an outstanding player and a great favourite of the huge crowds that thronged to watch the Roughyeds at their new ground at Watersheddings. Come the first season of Northern Union football he became the highest try scorer in that inaugural campaign, topping the list with 28 tries, eight more than his nearest rival. But as we shall see his life after his football days were over became difficult, though he maintained the buzz of competition by becoming an accomplished professional at another sport. There’s a great surviving photo of Hurst, looking every bit the image of an archetypal Victorian sporting hero. Resplendent in his Lancashire jersey,

hair slicked back, distinctive moustache, a huge leather belt holding up his shorts and clutching a big leather ball Hurst looks an athlete, composed, confident, at the height of his powers. ................................................... The Jack Hurst story begins in Chapel Street, in the Bedford area of Leigh where he was born in January 1868. One of Leigh Football Club's earliest grounds was a field behind the Three Crowns pub a few doors down eastwards down the street that backed onto the canal. It was here that Hurst made his name, his stock as a footballer rising at the same rate as Leigh grew in stature in the football world. Hurst's father Fred ran a grocer's shop on the premises where the family lived and on leaving school he found work as a pattern maker working for a local firm, Messrs Picksley, Sims & Co based at Bedford Foundry. His elder brother James, who worked as a baker, had taken up playing football for the Bedford team and Jack followed suit, soon making his name as a speedy and resourceful fullback with a good kick. In 1885 he joined the Leigh club, where his reputation swiftly grew. In that season Leigh remained unbeaten in 21 games as they tried to break into the ranks of the first class Lancashire clubs. Though still a teenager Hurst's

prowess was such that he was invited to play for Swinton, then undoubtedly one of the country's leading clubs and in the 1886-87 season he played 14 games for them at fullback against many of the leading sides in the country. But when the celebrated Jim Marsh came back from college Hurst lost his place in the side and resumed playing for Leigh, marking his return with three tries against Oldham Borough. He made the switch to the wing with great success, building up his speed and becoming a prolific scorer. His thrilling dashes along the touchline made him the favourite of the Leigh supporters. Hurst was quickly a player in demand and Leigh’s great rivals Tyldesley persuaded him briefly to transfer his affections before he returned. But another season at Leigh he was enticed away to play for Oldham, then one of the country's richest clubs with their magnificent ground at Watersheddings that they inaugurated on moving from Clarksfield in 1889. Hurst had assisted Oldham, St Helens and Halifax in their prestigious games against the New Zealand Maoris. He also played a leading role in Leigh's victory over the Maoris at the Three Crowns Field on a Wednesday afternoon in February 1889, a result that did more than anything to mark his own and Leigh’s emergence.

JACK HURST Mike Latham remembers Leigh’s first try-scoring hero. A larger version of this article appeared in Forty20 magazine.

But while Leigh moved to spacious new surroundings over Mather Lane Bridge just a few months after the tour game Hurst was also settling into a new home. Oldham's recruitment included enticing crack Welsh players like Bill McCutcheon and Dai Gwynn to the town. Hurst was from closer to home but the lure of taking over a prominent local hostelry was something he could not turn down. Briefly his brother James joined him in the Oldham ranks. Hurst and his wife Annie ran the Stag's Head on West Street in the centre of Oldham, a popular haunt for football supporters and a hub of the local community. Later they moved next door and took over the Prince William of Gloucester Hotel. Footballers were supposed to be strict amateurs but there was many a way for ambitious clubs to bend the rules and entice talented players from other parts of the country to join them. And with playing and training commitments at Watersheddings Annie often bore the brunt of looking after the business. Hurst became a regular try-scorer for Oldham and his pub was busy, especially after games as supporters flocked to talk to the local hero. Even mundane friendly games would attract five figure crowds to Watersheddings and when the opposition was attractive the crowds would sometimes top 20,000. Hurst finally achieved his ambition of winning a Lancashire cap against Cumberland at Whitehaven in 1890 in the summer months he developed his alternative sporting career, building up a reputation as formidable crown green bowler. He was a regular competitor at the bowling sweepstakes, especially those held in Blackpool in late summer and autumn that attracted huge numbers of entrants enticed by the lucrative prize money on offer. Hurst remained Oldham's leading light as they won the Lancashire Senior Competition in the 1893-94 season, scoring over 40 tries during

the campaign. After they secured the championship with victory at Salford the Oldham team was welcomed back at Werneth station by a large cheering crowd while the Oldham Volunteer Band played “See the Conquering Hero Comes.” After being conveyed through the main thoroughfares of the town as onlookers and passers-by cheered and waved their caps and handkerchiefs in the air, the Oldham players then alighted at their old headquarters at the Friendship Hotel at Mumps where the celebrations continued long into the night. Oldham entered the brave new world of Northern Union hopeful of continuing their successes, but despite Hurst’s scoring prowess they just missed out on honours. In that first season they finished fourth after a marathon 42 league games and lost 6-5 to Runcorn in the Lancashire Senior Competition play-off final despite his late try. The following season Oldham finished runners-up to Broughton Rangers in the Lancashire Senior Competition. Finally in 1897-98 Oldham became champions of Lancashire and in the following season were again runners-up but reached the final of the Challenge Cup, defeating Hunslet 19-9 at Fallowfield. Sadly, though, Hurst had lost his place in the side by this time, playing his final game against Swinton in October 1898. He scored 62 tries in 80 games for Oldham under Northern Union rules. Hurst found more success in his adopted sport of bowls. During September 1891 he was among 300 entrants to the prestigious knock-out tournament at the green attached to the Talbot Hotel in Blackpool, battling his way through several rounds before being eliminated. By 1902, when Hurst's prowess at the sport had grown, there were 576 entrants and the tournament took 21 days to complete with a crowd of 5,000 watching the final. He regularly took part in specially arranged contests against other

professional bowlers for prizes of £25 or £50, huge sums for the time. His matches often attracted large crowds and he would play at many of the principal bowls venues throughout the county, including the Squirrel Hotel, Horwich, the Fox Inn, Rochdale, the Imperial Hotel, Southport, the old Cock Inn, Middleton and the George Hotel, Prestwich as well as the prestigious Blackpool venues like the Talbot and the Waterloo. Accounts of Hurst's bowling feats regularly appeared in the Lancashire newspapers and he was always described as the "famous ex-Oldham footballer." A newspaper account elsewhere gives a clue why Hurst was engaged in such activities. ................................................... In December 1903 it was reported that, now licensee of the Prince William of Gloucester Hotel in Oldham, he had become bankrupt and had racked up liabilities of £1,295 and a deficiency of £856. He blamed this on "bad trade, the heavy expenses of carrying on the business and losses by betting and gambling." The court heard that "the bankrupt admits to having attended race meetings regularly and done betting for considerable amounts.” On one occasion recently he had lost £106 in one evening playing at dice and his losses at betting and gambling in the last year alone amounted to over £300. Hurst's bowling skills helped pay the bills after losing his pub and his enthusiasm for the sport remained undimmed with advancing years. In 1920, no less than 1,024 competitors took part in the Blackpool event at the Talbot for prize money of £125 and Hurst, now 52 reached the last sixteen. He died in December 1926 aged 58. "One of the greatest wing three-quarters in the late 1880s and 1890s," was the glowing tribute in his obituary.

Leigh Centurions recently confirmed that Gareth Hock has re-signed for the Club and he was included in the 19-man squad for today’s game. Head coach John Duffy said: “Gaz has signed for the rest of the season and I think he knows this is an opportunity for him to finish his playing career on his terms. “We know how good he is and he was great for me at Fev last year when he really bought into everything we tried to do. “He’ll enjoy our environment and he knows he’ll have to perform every week. And if he wants to go around for another year, he’s got a few months to nail a deal.

“Gaz is currently back in training after shoulder surgery and realistically he’s four weeks away from being in contention for selection. “He loves Leigh and he certainly has got the motivation to perform.” Gareth Hock said: “I’m really pleased to be back at Leigh Centurions and can’t wait to run out in front of the North Stand again.” Gareth Hock is sponsored by Palatine Paints, whose managing director Jason Huyton is also Leigh Centurions’ commercial director. He said: “Gaz holds a special place in our hearts within our family and we are delighted to see him back in a Leigh shirt. “He never gives anything less than his best, ensuring his qualities will further enhance the outstanding effort shown by our boys and the coaching staff.”

CENTURIONS TEAM UP WITH BMI THE ALEXANDRA HOSPITALBMI The Alexandra Hospital is proud to announce their new partnership with professional Rugby League Club, Leigh Centurions, as their new healthcare provider of choice.

Leigh Centurions are committed to improving the health and fitness of all their players. The new partnership with The Alexandra Hospital has therefore been a significant move for the club; as players now have access to specialist medical care in an established private hospital.

Leigh Centurions CEO Matthew Chantler said: “Our players now have fast access to specialist medical care from some of the region’s leading specialists and we

are delighted to have secured this new partnership. The health and fitness of our players in a highly competitive and physically challenging sport such as Rugby League is a priority and the partnership with The Alexandra Hospital demonstrates our commitment as a club to the players who put their bodies on the line for the team, the town and the loyal supporters each week.”

Marge Falconer, Executive Director, at The Alexandra, said: “As BMI Healthcare’s flagship hospital we are very proud to be in partnership with Leigh Centurions. Players will have access to specialist healthcare from experienced consultants that work alongside a specialised healthcare team; which

comprises dedicated nursing staff, anaesthetists, radiologists, working professionals and Chartered Physiotherapists. The players will have access to some of the most advanced medical equipment and expertise available.”

Leigh Centurions were founder members of the Rugby League in 1895 and have deep roots in the local community. Leigh Centurions are pleased to confirm a dual registration partnership has been agreed with Oldham. Members of the Centurions squad not required by their parent club will be available for selection for Scott Naylor’s Betfred League 1 side. ...................................................

Leigh Centurions Head Coach John Duffy said: “This is another good tool for us. Myself and Scott get on and both clubs have ‘dualled’ with Super League clubs so we know what works and what doesn’t.

“Scott’s been at Oldham a while now and he always does a good job. He’s a very good coach and bloke so this will make it a very worthwhile partnership for all parties.

“Scott’s lads come first but if he can give some of our players valuable game-time at an important stage of the season that will be great.”

Oldham are currently third in Betfred League 1 with six wins from nine games.

Oldham Head Coach Scott Naylor: “John Duffy is a good mate of mine and we both know what dual-reg is all about.

“Leigh approached us about it in the first instance and after giving it full consideration we felt it was a good idea which would benefit both clubs.

“Both clubs, of course, have to get out of it what they want to get out of it and I’m sure we will.

“We don’t have the biggest squad and John wants some of his lads to get more game time which will help

us in the event of injuries and maybe allow me, when appropriate, to rest some players or do some squad rotation.

“This will put us in a stronger situation than we’re in presently, from now to the end of the season, and enable us to be better equipped for the back end of the year than in previous seasons when we’ve had a small squad that’s been hit by injury.”
