more than 65 years experience, Amphenol leadsthe way in the design and manuacture o highquality sensors or temperature, gas, humidity and
pressure.
Sensors orHealthcareTemperature, Gas,Humidity and PressureSolutions
Constant investment in developing new materialsand production methods means Amphenol is
continually improving its perormance acrossa wide range o products, rom components tohigher-level assemblies. Competitively priced
solutions are developed in partnership with ourcustomers’ ever-increasing demands or quality, reliability and perormance.
We oer a total capability in the feld o
thermistors— designing and manuacturing
negative temperature coefcient (NTC), positivetemperature co-efcient (PTC) thermistors, andunits that combine the best eatures o both
technologies.
Our wide range o international approvals reectsour commitment to excellence. We hold more than100 quality approvals rom recognized bodies
around the world, including the frst and onlythermistor-based temperature standard traceable
to NIST—feld tested or 25 years and still holdingcalibration to within 0.001°C.

Leading Edge Technology
Today’s patient care demands the ultimate in accurateand reliable monitoring o critical parameters.Amphenol is a pioneer in the development o new andincreasingly robust sensor technology or medicalapplications. We oer innovative solutions, astdevelopment cycles and excellent quality control to
meet the most stringent requirements. Our in-housedesign and modeling capabilities expedite the processo product development and ensure frst-time successrates or temperature (thermistors and thermopile IR)and gas, humidity and MEMS-based pressure sensors.
We have developed state-o-the-art, high-perormancesensors known or their accuracy, reliability and smallsize. They are used extensively or heart catheters, esophageal stethoscopes, ever thermometers, skinsensors, blood analyzers, incubators, respirationmonitors and hypodermic needle sensors.
Innovative work on small precision sensors continuesor cancer research. Thermistors measure thetemperature o cells and with precise monitoring, doctors can use heat to destroy diseased cells intumors.

Amphenol Advanced Sensors
Although chemical analyzers have been used or many years, we are developing new products that rangerom large laboratory apparatus to small hand helddevices. Our sensors monitor oxygen level or criticalcare and blood chemistry (including glucose, DNA andcholesterol), and or diseases such as HIV and cancer.
The accuracy and small size o these devices mean thatresults that took time to process in the laboratory cannow be available right at a patient’s bedside.
During dialysis, a patient’s blood is removed rom thebody, artifcially fltered by a machine, treated andreturned to the body. Our NTC thermistor ensures thatthe blood is reheated to body temperature beore it isreturned.
Thermodilution catheters are used extensively incardiac diagnostic and corrective procedures. Tiny
NTC thermistors located near the tip o catheters arehermetically sealed in glass and have fne diameterplatinum alloy leads welded to insulated extensionleads. They are then inserted into hypodermic needles, catheters or other small housings that require extendedleads. Disposable hypodermic needle sensors areespecially critical during open heart surgery, when theyare inserted into the myocardium muscle to monitortemperature. Hypodermic needle probes with smallthermistor beads or chips can be inserted into targetedanatomical sites or temperature measurementand are particularly suited or cancer research andtreatment, particularly or brain tumors.
Disposable pressure sensors are used primarily duringsurgical procedures and in the ICU to monitor patientheart rate and blood pressure. Pressure sensors inventilator machines watch patients with respiratoryillness or people on lie support, helping control theamount o air pressure delivered to a patient’s lung. They also monitor people with sleep disorders. Duringneonatal care, pressure sensors help physicians checkthe pressure within an expectant mother’s uterus.
NTC thermistors monitor temperature and air
circulation within incubators and skin temperatureso premature babies. Our biomedical chip thermistorassemblies are designed or oral or rectal patienttemperature monitoring and also or continuousmonitoring necessary during induced hypothermia andgeneral anesthesia. NTC thermistor-based digital everthermometers have replaced glass thermometers asthe most widely used method or measuring humanbody temperature. Our reusable probe has a plastic ormetal shat, with the thermistor located in the metal tip.

NTC Thermistors
Thermistors are thermally sensitive resistors with eithera negative resistance/temperature coefcient (NTC)or positive resistance/temperature (PTC) coefcient.Amphenol oers a wide range o both types othermistors rom component level through completeassemblies. Both types o thermistors are solid state
ceramic components, known or their exceptionalquality and long lie.
NTC thermistors are most oten used or healthcaredevices and are manuactured rom the oxides otransition metals and can operate over the range o-196°C to 1000°C.
Key characteristics of NTC thermistors• Defned sensitivity to temperature• Sensitivity to electrical power input• Sensitivity to changes in thermal conductivity
Main applications for NTC thermistors• Temperature measurement and control• Temperature compensation• Surge suppression• Power measurement• Fluid level-ow detection
IR Sensors
Thermopile IR temperature and gas sensors and
silicon base humidity sensors use micro machiningtechnologies and proven semiconductor manuacturingprocesses or quality, reliability and pricecompetitiveness. IR sensors are used in applicationssuch as tympanic ear thermometers when an accurateand instant non-contact temperature measurement isneeded.
Key characteristics of IR sensors• High sensitivity and consistent accuracy• Ultra small size• Fast response time
• Low cost
